History

The villain calling himself the Occultist is actually a rogue Circle of Thorns mage by the name of Ursis. Having lived and died in Oranbega centuries ago, and having since existed as a disembodied spirit until taking possession of a new human body, he has accumulated much knowledge and attained great skill in the mystic arts.

Ursis probably planned his treachery long before he betrayed his brethren to outside forces. It is known that he secretly brokered a deal with an evil cult known as the Hand of Ra for mysterious relics kept in an Oranbegan storehouse. These items were liberated by members of the Mob, a gang of ex-Family members controlled by the Made Man. Ursis showed the gangsters where and how to strike the underground section of Oranbega and steal the artifacts. He then acted as the middleman between the two groups, earning the Mob millions in real gold, and allowing the Hand of Ra to cause all kinds of trouble when they put their stolen acquisitions to good use. It is unknown exactly what the Occultist gained in all this, aside from a convenient cover escaping the Circle. When the Hand of Ra eventually turned on him to tie up the remaining loose ends in their schemes for power, the Occultist was conveniently saved by a group of heroes sent by the mysterious Dr. Oracle, and in exchange for his safety he told of where and how the Hand of Ra could be defeated.

The Occultist disappeared for several months after that until the PPD were able to track him down entering into another secret section of Oranbega. Contacting a team of heroes to deal with the dangerous magician, it was found that he invaded the cavernous city to steal a magical item called the Crystal of Ka'Nesh. When heroes arrived on the scene he used the cover of battle and a crafty spell to escape unmolested, his prize in hand.

This would prove to be a dangerous situation as MAGI later learned the crystal in question could grant someone with the skill of the Occultist tremendous destructive power. Once located, heroes again headed inside a section of Oranbega where the evil mage was known to be, but this time, instead of the Circle of Thorns, they were met by an army of the Occultist's sinister shadows. The heroes eventually fought through the darkness, pierced the Occultist's tricks, and found the magician himself in his secret lair. In the battle that ensued the crystal, which had been embedded into his chest, was cracked and destroyed, robbing the mystic of his power and defeating him once and for all. (He later claimed that he had already absorbed enough of the crystal's energy into himself and so feigned defeat to once again fool his enemies.)

After being moved to Zigursky Penitentiary he again met up with the likes of the Made Man, as well as super criminals Nine-Ball and Mountebank, all of which had a grudge against Charlatan. They agreed to combine their talents into the Kill Charlatan Squad and succeeded in breaking out of jail to make their dreams come true. Together they fought and defeated the skilled stage magician, and on the advice of Mountebank locked him away in Praetoria's Behavioral Adjustment Facility.

The Occultist was last sighted working in the Rogue Isles.

Group Affiliations

The Occultist would be considered to have once been a member of the Circle of Thorns. After branching out on his own and winding up in jail, he joined the short-lived Charlatan Kill Squad to carry out the team's very specific goal before dissolving their union.

Having surfaced again in the Rogue Isles, the Occultist briefly joined the ranks of United Underworld as their resident master magician before dissapearing again.
