This is a WIP so please bear with me. Vigil began life as Deadline, a brutal emotionless vigilante acting out on trauma from his past. He was influenced by characters like Rorschach from Watchmen, The Question, and The Spirit. Unfortunately, due to copyright issues, I had to remake him under a different name. It took me a long time to find a name that fit as well as Deadline, but eventually I came across Vigil and it seemed like a perfect replacement. I made Vigil to contrast what had become something of a norm in Virtue roleplay, all these characters with godly powers who acted like the constant struggle to keep the world from ending was less important than the school prom. Instead, Vigil is much closer to a human vigilante than I have ever come before, pained, self-deluding but also insightful in his own way, and -very- serious about fighting corruption. He's meant to be the sort of character you hate to love, a human pushed beyond his limits in a superhuman world, working toward similar ideals of societal perfection as anyone else, but using very different methods.

Overview

Vigil grew up as Sam Murphy, the son of Irish immigrants. His family moved to Paragon City when he was a baby, searching for that elusive American dream. Instead, what they found was a city of crime and corruption powerful enough that it tore his family apart. Years would pass, and Sam would reintroduce himself to the criminal underworld of the city as "Vigil", a masked vigilante simply dressed in a sharp suit and mask. His brutal methods caught the attention of the media and police, leading them to condemn him as a psychopath. To this day he prowls the streets of Paragon City and the Rogue Isles, hunting the corrupt and vicious both on the street and in positions of power.

What You Could Know

Vigil broke into the vigilante scene in the '80s, gaining some publicity from people who were intrigued about his mysterious nature. But this did not last long, as Vigil's methods for dispensing justice became more and more brutal, causing Paragon City's heroes to condemn him as a madman and arrest him. Vigil managed to outmaneuver the police for a long time, but was eventually captured by his own son, a police officer at the time, and put in the Zig. He spent these years honing his skills against supers, left with little other choice. The Zig was tough, and you had to be tougher to survive. It wasn't until the Arachnos Breakout that Vigil found his opportunity and escaped to the Rogue Isles, though he still visits Paragon City to keep tabs on the criminals in his hometown. Vigil has a bounty on his head, and is wanted by Heroes and Villains alike, but has allied himself with a powerful mercenary group, "Dirty Hands Inc."

Personality

Vigil is typically a quiet, bitter man with little patience. But under the mask lies a man with a code of honor, principles, and a dark sense of humor. He is a well-spoken, literate man with a fine vocabulary, though among acquaintances he can be rather vulgar. In battle, he turns his focused rage upon his enemies. He has described this battle fury as the motivating force behind his skill, and the angrier he gets, the more dangerous he becomes.

He is simultaneously the gentleman who will tuck you in at night and tell you not to be afraid, and the monster hiding in your closet waiting to strike.

Fighting Style

Vigil is the poor man's anti-hero. He has no powers and instead relies on his self-taught style of brawling. No expensive gadgets besides his night-vision goggles (a gift from a friend) , Vigil often has to improvise with whatever is at hand. Pencils, trashcans, dumpster lids, silverware, Vigil can take just about anything and use it as a weapon. He also has spent enough time fighting crime to know what the fragile parts of the human body are, and how to fight different body types and powers. Finally, Vigil is the type of fighter who just refuses to die. He would likely find a way to keep fighting no matter what unless he was completely obliterated. Willpower, experience and ruthlessness are his strengths.

Kira

Since Sam Murphy became Vigil, there have only been three people who were truly close to him. The first, his wife, has since died. The second, his son, is not a completely destroyed relationship, but it is certainly strained, and the two rarely speak. The third is Vigil's one and only true friend; the young Kira Slater. No two people would seem to make a worse match, yet the two became not just fast friends but skilled partners in crime. He has her back, and trusts that she has his as well.

IC Comments About Vigil

"Vigil is, without a doubt, one of my best employees, and more importantly, one of my closest friends. I would trust him with my life, something I cannot often say truthfully. Vigil is someone I'm proud to call myself the leader of, as well as someone I respect very much. If you hurt him, you'll have to answer to me." - Kira
