General
James Angelo Martignetti was born on September 29, 1980 in Trenton, New Jersey.
The family name is pronounced “Martin-yet-ee”, but he has found that most people have a difficult time figuring that out from reading it. He responds to the most commonly misused “Martin-etti” and even makes special exception for DJ Shecky’s trademark name-fumbling by allowing him the nickname “Jimmy Spaghetti”. His parents called him Jimmy almost from day one and, because of this, he does not take well to being referred to as James or even Jim simply because they sound strange to his ears. That aside, he is a very laidback sort of guy and will respond to pretty much anything, even just “hey you”. One nickname he does not appreciate, however, is the one bestowed upon him by his cousin at an early age and used to further taunt him even today: Jimmykins.
Having lived away from Jersey for so long and having purposely practiced such, he retains only a slight accent. When he is overly tired, stressed or drunk, the accent slips in and out in varying degrees of thickness. He dislikes his natural accent because he considers it to have too many negative connotations attached to it and so he tries to keep it contained as much as possible.
Appearance
Standing at 6’1” and approximately 190lbs., Jimmy is a self-proclaimed ‘skinny nerd’, but he does not give himself as much credit as he deserves. Rich Italian skin is complimented with a face of angular, chiseled features framed by a neatly-trimmed mop of darkest brown purposely styled to look a bit lazy and full. The slightest tint of natural auburn only comes into view when caught by the light and does much to accentuate eyes that match his hair and carry an almost constant sparkle. Up until recently, said eyes were hidden behind glasses with round Lennon-style lenses, but two of the people closest to him have convinced him to give contacts another try and so now he is usually seen without. The one thing that mars this otherwise naturally attractive visage is the appearance of tiny dimples whenever he smiles wide.
As far as his fashion sense goes, “metro” would be one of the first words that come to mind. While he isn’t flamboyant or excessive in the slightest, he does have a good eye for color and style. Most often, he can be found in something as simple as jeans, t-shirt and open vest, yet somehow manages to make them seem more attractive than lazy. Like the typical Italian, he wears a suit well and a tuxedo even better, but rarely does he don such items, instead saving them for more special occasions. His most beloved article of clothing, which he rarely wears due to it not matching with most of his wardrobe, is an ankle-length silver leather trench coat. Lastly, he wears black leather gloves at all times when in public.

Family
Jimmy’s immediate family is a pretty typical (if not stereotypical) Italian family from Central Jersey.
Stephano Martignetti is a quiet, stoic man who appears eternally ticked off but, on the rare occasion he does utter a word or two, he is rather soft-spoken and eloquent. He is an office drone working indirectly for a family-owned corporation and makes a decent living. Most of the time, he ignores Jimmy’s existence, which is preferable.
Constance “Connie” Martignetti plays up the stereotypes quite well and made a career of being a homemaker where she bore and raised two children and now eagerly awaits grandchildren to babysit and spoil. Of all of Jimmy’s immediate family, she is the only one who appears to still love and care for her son and is the sole reason Jimmy still attends family functions.
Anthony “Tony” Martignetti can best be described as a weasel. Three years Jimmy’s senior, what began as natural sibling rivalry spawned into something short of homicidal as the boys grew older. Tony was a bully through and through and once certain traits of Jimmy’s emerged, it seemed he had made a lifelong mission of tormenting and torturing his little brother and keeps at it to this day. He has recently become engaged to his girlfriend of two years; a bottle-blond, vapid waif aptly named Barbie who compliments his oily, mob boss appearance quite well. Looks can be deceiving, however, for Tony has no ties to the “family” and though he refers to himself as an “important businessman”, he owns a used car dealership he inherited from the previous owner when he passed away mid-coitus with his secretary who was not his wife. This is a fact Jimmy likes to remind his brother of whenever Tony plays the “important businessman” card.
Albert “Alby” Romano is the other black sheep in the extended family and perhaps the only one Jimmy truly likes. Only one year older, his cousin has always been and probably always will be Jimmy’s best friend. As kids, they were both ostracized from the family for various reasons and sought solace with each other, but more than that they have always enjoyed each other’s company. Alby’s father split town with his little brother when Alby was very young and the somewhat mysterious circumstances surrounding it were what earned both him and his mother black sheep status within the family. His mother moved them out of Trenton up to Brooklyn in New York City during middle school, so Jimmy was forced to face most of his teenage years in school without Alby’s protection. Close friendship aside, the two men love to banter with each other, tossing insults and sometimes punches, and Alby lives to embarrass his cousin. He also fancies himself “an artist of the starving variety” and while he truly is talented, he plays up the cliché because it amuses him. He lives in a loft in Queens, New York.
Coming Out
With regards to his sexual orientation, Jimmy once said to Kina, “When we were kids, girls had cooties, only for me they never stopped.”
That’s not to say he has any aversion to women – after all, his best friend, Kina, is one – but he is most definitely homosexual all the way. He did kiss one of his girl friends once in high school, just to see if it did anything for him, but it did not.
He cannot remember exactly when he first noticed he found the same gender appealing, but it seems to him that it was always in the background somewhere. As a Catholic raised by a rather homophobic family, he was taught from the very start that homosexuality was an affliction or something akin to a disease, and that spawned a lot of shame and self-hatred during his formative years as he fought to keep it repressed. That, and his brother certainly didn’t need more reasons to beat on him.
When he was only eleven, he found himself falling into a schoolyard crush with a boy he had been friends with for a few years. It was a very confusing time as he battled between his own natural feelings and what had been ingrained into his head as far as the church and his own parents’ beliefs. Eventually, the curiosity of youth won and while it can certainly be seen as a positive step, the way in which he chose to take it was not exactly the brightest of ideas. It turned out the boy at least carried the same curiosity, if not the feelings, and the two shared an experimental kiss behind the church after catechism one day. All would have been well and good had the boy’s mother not come looking for him at that exact moment.
The incident caused quite the uproar in Jimmy’s home and he was forbidden to ever even speak to the boy again, though it was difficult to control those orders during school hours. And while he did remain friendly with the boy, Jimmy had become too afraid of the ramifications to ever attempt to act on his feelings again.
That set him on a course for years of repression and denial, but as far as his family was concerned, it was too late. The damage had been done. He was no longer accepted by both his immediate and extended family and, even at such a young age, became another black sheep, alongside his aunt and cousin. His brother used the entirety of the situation as fuel for his torments, which only became stronger as the years went by.
It wasn’t until his sophomore year of high school that he finally gave in to nature’s course, what with the uprising of hormones from puberty, and decided to let go of some of that repression. Having almost an entirely female group of friends for so many years did much to aid and comfort in that transition, for they were understanding and supportive when he finally admitted what they had suspected from the start. Even now, his two closest friends outside of his cousin are females, and while Daira is rather indifferent to it all, Kina reminds him much of the girls he left behind in Jersey.
At present time, he is fully out to his friends and family and is quite open about his orientation. He does not feel the need to hide it and is a firm believer in as well as a strong fighter for equality, though he does not go to such as extremes as participating in marches or other similar events. On the same note, he also steers far from the gay stereotypes, though not through any purposeful course of action. He simply isn’t a feminine, flamboyant type of person or, as he puts it, “I’m only a tiny blip on the gaydar”. Most who know him, if asked, would admit they had not realized it until he said something. These days, however, it is impossible not to notice now that he is in a committed relationship and is as publicly affectionate with his partner as the average heterosexual couple would be to each other.
Clairvoyance
As if being bombarded by shame, guilt, disgust, and even physical torment wasn’t enough, Jimmy was faced with yet another life-changing event that would do even more irreparable damage.
At the age of thirteen, along with the first stages of puberty, came an unexpected change that definitely did not happen to other boys and appeared literally overnight. Everything he touched spawned colors and sounds within his mind; sometimes still images, sometimes snippets of something akin to distorted movie clips. None of it made any sense and he could not seem to make it stop. His parents were baffled as no one had ever heard of such a malady, and when the continuous onslaught gave way to a debilitating migraine, they finally rushed him to the emergency room. Doctors there were just as clueless and sedated him for lack of any better ideas.
Within a few days, he came to realize on his own that the visions only occurred when he touched with his hands and that in itself made a huge difference. It was difficult not to do so, as one can imagine, but it halted the attack and delivered him from the pain. The question then became how to deal with the situation. What had caused it? Could it be stopped? What was it, exactly?
These were questions that could not be answered by conventional medicine and none of the specialists he was subsequently sent to had any idea of how to help the ailing teen. Most of his family had long since abandoned him at the time of the incident with the boy behind the church and so none seemed too concerned about the situation. Only his mother kept at it, taking him to one doctor after another for second, third, and even fourth opinions.
During this time, Jimmy was forced out of public school for there was too much to interact with and even wearing gloves did not seem to help. He rarely left the house, which was perfectly okay by him at the time, and was homeschooled for the rest of the year. And when it had begun to seem that all hope of finding an answer had come to an end, a neurologist in New York had given his mother the name of a very special sort of unorthodox physician based out of Rhode Island in a place called Paragon City.
They had all heard of Paragon. Who hadn’t? It was the city full of freaks and weirdos, all with superpowers and a very skewed idea of reality. It was one of those taboo topics of conversation and most of the time people around their parts tried to ignore the existence of it completely. Because of this image they all held so strong, it was with much apprehension that his mother finally relented to making an appointment with the doctor, but it proved to be the right decision for the man was able to make a diagnosis when no other had even come close. Jimmy had developed a psychic ability known as clairvoyance.
Life became much easier for Jimmy from that point on, both with the help of that doctor and others he was introduced to in the very specialized field. He soon learned that his ability was something akin to a genetic mutation that had been dormant until puberty had awoken it and it was likely that others far back in his bloodline on one side or the other had also been clairvoyant. This did much to ease Jimmy’s mind, though it was quite the opposite for the rest of the family.
As if he didn’t have enough prejudice and hatred coming from them with regards to his orientation, most of the older relatives who were very rooted in the church treated his newfound ability as a type of magic or witchery and thus found even more reasons to despise or even disown him. As Jimmy himself is known for saying, “I went from being ‘the queer kid’ to ‘the freak queer kid’ overnight.”
By the time he was fourteen and the new year started, he had gained enough control over the ability to return to public school; however, he was forced to wear gloves at all times. With what little he had learned, he could finally use them to shield his hands from “reading” whatever they came in contact with. As the years passed, with much aid from his gaggle of doctors, he mastered the ability to not only control the assault of visions to receive them at a comfortable level, but could sort through them all like pictures or movies and actually view them one at a time and comprehend what they truly were: visions of the past. Eventually, he was even able to learn to control the ability to the point that he could turn it off, so to speak, for very brief periods of time; long enough for, say, a handshake if he was not wearing gloves. And though he has tried over the years turn it off completely at will, he has yet to be able to do so.
Paragon
With all the hatred and contempt that had followed him through his teenage years, high school graduation could not come soon enough. Although he still carried many reservations about the city due to his upbringing, Jimmy decided to apply and was accepted to Paragon City University on the Steel Canyon campus. He had no idea what he really wanted to do with his life at that point since he did have limits imposed by his clairvoyance, so he decided liberal arts was a pretty generic path to follow.
The idea was that, in the city full of freaks and superpowered people, he could simply not use his ability, would keep it off his records, and would use the chaos and insanity of such a place to hide. Because he had learned to control the clairvoyance so well, he could very easily pass as “normal” and what better place to do it than where the catgirls and energy blasters and the like would take all of the attention and one skinny Italian nerd from Jersey would just be another face in the crowd.
Eighteen years old and diploma in hand, he did not even bother to stick around for grad night and instead hopped a train with only a single suitcase. The car he had bought from his uncle the summer before would remain stored in his parents’ garage and any other personal items he wished for in the future he could return for later. By that point, he wanted nothing more than to turn his back on the only place he had ever lived and start over in a new city with a new life where no one had any idea who he was or what he could do. He would just be an average guy for the first time in longer than he could remember.
Although he had traveled to Paragon many times over the years for appointments with the various doctors, he had never really spent any solid amount of time there and nothing can truly prepare an outsider for life within the city itself. It was a pretty rude awakening and there was much to intimidate him, but he remained strong, resolving to adapt at all costs, for anything was better than Trenton. Even chicks with green skin and free-roaming demons. Normal definitely became a relative term.
Two weeks before classes began, while still living in a motel having not acquired his dorm room yet, he met a man at the campus bookstore. Jake was a Key West transplant; a rich boy by birth but a beach bum by desire. He was a year older than Jimmy and had taken a year off from school to follow the waves up the coast before eventually settling in Paragon City, where he enrolled in college. The two clicked instantly, becoming fast friends, and by the time school began, they were already lovers. Barely two months into the semester, Jake convinced Jimmy to leave the dorms behind and move in with him. Both were full-time students and neither had a job, but it would be on Jake’s parents’ dime as they owned a golf course down in Florida and could easily afford it. Even so, Jimmy found himself an unremarkable retail job to help pay some of his way and they soon settled into their own dinky apartment in Kings Row.
Later, Jimmy’s change in profession would cause him to drop out of school during his third year and it ultimately became the downfall of his relationship with Jake. At twenty-one years old he had acquired the perfect job, but in doing so had lost his partner as well as their cat, had forfeited the remainder of his education, and thus moved himself out to a slightly bigger apartment in Talos Island. Currently, he owns and resides in a condo in a pricy neighborhood in Founders Falls and has lived there for approximately four years.
Over time, Jimmy not only became acclimated to the city and all its strangeness, but developed a real, true love for the place. He considers it his home, more so than he ever did Trenton, and there is only one thing now that could ever convince him to leave.
Occupation
During his third year at PCU, he was approached by a Sergeant of the United States Marine Corps, offering him a job that would utilize his ability. The military had never been a consideration at any point in Jimmy’s life, but the fact that he had been sought out specifically for his clairvoyance was enough to convince him to engage in formal interview with the Sergeant and it proved to be a wise choice. He was recruited shortly thereafter into a counter-terrorism organization based out of Paragon that was formed by the US government but is run entirely by the USMC. Jimmy is not enlisted in the Corps; he is a contracted civilian.
Jimmy’s official working title is somewhat unique in that there was not a position already created for the specific job he does. This title is “Intelligence Operative, Civilian”, which he insists is a lot less glamorous than it sounds. While his job is intelligence in nature and he does travel often for it, he is a non-combat agent and he is paid by the job (and very well, at that). Most of the time, his work consists of using his clairvoyance to “read” items recovered from scenes or traveling to locations to “read” the entirety. Though he is always escorted by armed Recon Marines, he is only ever sent to cold scenes and thus his job carries virtually no risk.
As his job deals with terrorism, most of the visions he sees are disturbing, stressful, and sometimes traumatic. Because of this, he is required to attend evaluations by both a psychiatrist and a psychologist every three months to ensure his occupation does not impart lasting mental and/or emotional effects. He is also subjected to mandatory evaluations by a general physician, a neurologist and ophthalmologist in the same periodic intervals. The nature of the job plays a big part in his laidback, goofy, somewhat youthful demeanor. While most people see him as “dorky” and he defines himself as such, the truth of it is that said behavior is a coping mechanism. This is something very few people know or would really understand.
Telekinesis
In October of 2008, for the first time in his eight-year career with the organization, Jimmy was assigned to work with a platoon of Recon Marines. He had only ever worked solo before then.
The job began as a routine reconnaissance op overseas in Johannesburg, South Africa. He was placed on a team with two Recon Marines and another civilian agent like himself, only that one was a combat operative and female. The foursome worked nonstop the minute they touched ground in the foreign country and were in each other’s company so much that they formed instant friendships, feeling less like co-workers and more like buddies who had known each other for years. Of the three, he clicked most with Lance Corporal Alistair Abdool, while his other two teammates, Lance Corporal Justin O’Connor and civilian Daira SilentStriker, were drawn to each other.
By the end of the week, orders had come down from above and the recon op had been terminated. All non-combat civilians would be returned to the States and the rest would re-form into a search and rescue op south of the Namibia border. At the time, Jimmy was a little disappointed and a little saddened that he would have to leave his new friends so soon, especially since the odds of ever working with them again were slim. Promises were made to look each other up once all had returned home, but once he was separated from them, he would not see any of them again for quite some time.
Within the next week, word was passed to him via a friend in communications that something had gone very wrong and the platoon was attacked by an unknown force. Abdool was killed by sniper fire, O’Connor had been struck by a grenade blast and barely survived, and Daira had been the one to carry him to safety. A job out of state kept him from attending Abdool’s funeral and by the time he had a chance to try and contact Daira, he learned she had gone off to Brazil with a mixed group of Marines and mercenaries to take down a global conspiracy threat. Daira was reported killed on the mission and it was at that point that the entirety of it all finally hit Jimmy like a figurative ton of bricks.
While he had always been aware of just how valuable his clairvoyance was to the organization and had a good idea of just how many threats to national security had been derailed or avoided altogether because of the information his readings provided, it was after this series of events that Jimmy began to see things from a whole new perspective. Though it was true he endured psychological torments to some degree, he considered his job relatively safe and simple. He wasn’t out hiking through the desert or jumping out of planes or getting shot at or dodging grenades and, up until that point, he had been more or less removed from the reality of what others of the organization really did.
Of course, he understood that it was military and knew what the Marines did for a living, but as he had never been close to a part of that side of it before, he had never truly grasped just what it was they did. Or, rather, he couldn’t relate to them and their jobs. In ways he still cannot explain to this day, the op in South Africa and the events following it forever changed his life and it was then that his life began to seem so mundane and he felt useless. Obviously, that was far from the case given what he did in his work, but he needed more. He needed to be a part of the bigger picture. When the Marines and the civilian combat operatives like Daira went off to fight the good fight, he did not want to be left behind again. But, how could he accomplish that? Enlisting was not an option both because he was certain he could not make it through basic training and because he did not wish to give up his job in the process. So, the question became of what he could do that might possibly earn him combat status or at least allow him to stay on and fight alongside the next time the other civilians were sent home.
Perhaps there was a way he might use his clairvoyance in this endeavor and, with that in mind, he began researching his own ability deeper than he had ever cared to before. Hours he spent reading books and scouring the internet, learning all he could about different types of clairvoyance as well as other psychic abilities. When that path netted no results, he turned his attention to texts and articles about neurology, brainwave studies and so forth, cross-referencing them all until finally he struck gold.
About thirty years ago, a clairvoyant with the same past-reading ability as Jimmy had embarked on a similar quest to enhance his gift and ultimately trained himself to harness the psychic energy and convert it into kinetic energy. It was a long journey and the man had outlined a rigorous training plan for himself that would theoretically allow him to one day move objects as large as cars, people, maybe even small structures with the power of his mind. Unfortunately, the man had been killed in a motor vehicle accident long before he could fully test his program.
It was exactly what Jimmy had been looking for. If he could use the man’s documentation and outlines to train himself to do the same, he might one day be able to use telekinetic abilities to his advantage with regards to his job. If he were really lucky, he might even be able to use it for combat someday. After considerable effort he was finally able to accomplish the feat, however slightly, and that gave him all the incentive he needed to keep at it. Much like the clairvoyance, he cannot explain how it works, just that it does.
For now, he practices daily and, over the past six months, has trained himself to the point where he can pick up and move a single small object however he desires. He can maneuver multiple objects, but as of now can only perform the same action with them all. If he attempts to make them do different things, he loses the connection. Twice, he has managed to lift a person for a short time and has once used force to knock a person down. It’s a slow process, but he has high hopes for himself.
Kyle
The demands of his job were what ultimately destroyed the first serious relationship of his adulthood. Too many phone calls in the middle of the night, too many long jobs he couldn’t talk about because the information was classified; more importantly, Jake had come before the job but the job had to come before Jake. At the time, Jimmy was so concerned with proving both to himself and his family that he could make it on his own and do something noteworthy with his life that he gave more to the job than anything else. In hindsight, he realizes that he had been selfish in that endeavor, expecting Jake to just accept things as they were and work around it. In truth, when the fights got worse and the threats began, he should have taken a step back and reevaluated his priorities. Instead, Jake walked out of his life and he fell into a deep depression.
From that point forward, he threw himself into his work and had come to understand that, if he were to continue on with his covert profession, certain sacrifices would have to be made. One of those sacrifices would be any sort of love life worth mentioning. Over the years he did date here and there and some he developed feelings for, but ultimately things would fall apart and he would be back to square one. For the most part, he accepted that he would have to remain content with meaningless flings or one-night-stands because anything more than that just wasn’t possible.
Eventually, there came a time when the meaningless sex was no longer worth the disappointment. All it served to do was remind him of the good thing he had once that he could never have again, and so he resolved to remove himself completely from the dating circuit and suffer a life of celibacy until such time as he decided his occupation was no longer more important to him than companionship.
One night at the Pocket D whilst hanging out with his friends at one of the usual shows, Daira introduced him to a young man she had met the evening before. Kyle Rymes was his name and he had only been in the city for a matter of days, beginning a three-month contract with a martial arts studio wherein he performed demonstrations to the public. A true outsider, the city as a whole had intimidated, if not frightened the poor guy, and he seemed shy and skittish amongst the crowd. The two got to talking and the friendship was as instant and comfortable as the ones he had acquired with Daira and the others in South Africa, if not better.
He could not deny that he found the guy rather attractive, enhanced considerably by the fact that he had not been intimate with another person for several months, but Kyle had spoken of the appeal of some of the young women that liked to loiter around the studio and watch him work. That was a disappointment, of course, but a short-lived one for Kyle mentioned in conversation one night that he was gender indiscriminate and said admission sparked a serious interest from Jimmy.
Even so, he already knew it was pointless to go anywhere with it and he liked Kyle too much as a friend to ruin thing with meaningless (or even meaningful) sex when he could not invest time in another person and Kyle would not be staying in Paragon once his contract was up anyway. Despite best intentions on both their parts, the more time they spent around each other, the more they enjoyed each other’s company until there came a point where Jimmy realized he was feeling more than just friendship. He decided then that the best course of action would be to limit his time around Kyle, if not avoid him altogether.
It was an effort in futility, for both of them got highly intoxicated on St. Patrick’s Day, as people are wont to do, and somewhere in the drunken haze Jimmy admitted said feelings and even went so far as to ask for a date. Much to his surprise, and despite the fact that in sobriety Jimmy knew it was a bad idea, Kyle agreed. Once the hangovers subsided, Jimmy tried to back out of it, and when questioned as to why, he decided to sit down and have a long talk with Kyle about his profession and how it affects his social life.
He expected Kyle to understand his inability to devote time to another person and simply walk away. Instead, the discussion went directions Jimmy never imagined. Kyle understood, to an extent, the situation and what attempting anything would entail, but he was willing to give it a shot. This surprised Jimmy greatly, but he decided to take a chance himself and organized the most exciting of dates he had ever put together and the two had a fabulous time. Even so, he kept a considerable distance between them, even going as far as to duck away from the standard good night kiss. If they were going to do this, he told himself, they were going to do it slowly and carefully. He could not chance scaring Kyle off if things happened too fast.
But, as both are young, healthy males, hormones eventually lost that fight for them (or won, depending on how one looks at it). Some issues arose surrounding Kyle’s job and nomadic nature as well as Jimmy’s fears and insecurities, but for every argument that sprung up, they came out better than they went in. Before he could stop himself and despite how hard he fought against it, Jimmy found himself falling in love with the boy – a feeling he shared quite accidentally with both Kyle and the crowd around them at the D while in a state of inebriation one night.
While Kyle still does not seem to share a feeling quite that strong, many talks have led them to agree that they very much like each other and what they have and both are willing to face the odds and do what they can to try and make things work. One of the steps recently taken was with regards to Kyle’s living situation. He had been staying at a Motel 6 since his arrival in Paragon, but Jimmy offered to let him stay at his place for as long as he would be in town. Kyle had been spending more and more nights with him anyway and if he didn’t have to lose half his paycheck to a motel, he might be able to save a decent amount of money to put toward possibly settling somewhere some day. That somewhere being Paragon, Jimmy hopes.
Currently, Kyle is still living with him and Jimmy admits he hasn’t been this happy with another person or with life itself in more years than he can even remember. His only fear now is that when Kyle’s contract is up he really will leave, and though he promised to do his best to return when he could, Jimmy isn’t sure he believes that. Because that day is fast approaching, he has been trying to come up with options for Kyle that will convince him to give up the nomadic life and try settling down somewhere for once, preferably with him.
