Nebula Man: A mysterious corpse at the center of a nebula is brought to life and made into a super-hero.

SUMMARY

A dead body is found floating in the middle of the Orion Nebula during the late phases of the Bifrost Project. The body is brought to Earth and then later comes to life during radical bioelectric-therapy applied by Doctor Zar.

Unable to remember who he is, the resurrected creature is simply dubbed “Nebula Man”. It is discovered he possesses incredible celestial powers and a high-tech suit of armor that makes him largely impervious to physical harm.

Nebula Man now fights for Alpha Squad but with no memory of his past, he struggles to adapt to life on Earth.

ORIGIN

In September 2009, Mars Five was continuing to scan for Galactic recruits, via the Polaris Satellite and Project Bifrost. He spots a strange anomaly at the center of the Orion nebula, in what appears to be a coffin made from a massive topaz crystal. Inside the coffin is a body of mysterious origin.

Mars proceeds to transport the coffin back to Earth via the dimensional transport beams located at the core of the Polaris Satellite.

The body inside the topaz coffin is a 6-foot tall humanoid with turquoise skin. His DNA appears to suggest he is mostly human, but with some mutated strands, (particularly in various repair genes), and clearly his skin pigmentation is entirely unique. The corpse is also wearing highly advanced armor, made of an alloy unknown to Earth science. At the center of his armor is a perfectly round topaz crystal - so perfect in round shape and clarity that it could not have been cut or derived from Earth. The armor is fused to dead body and removing it would be impossible without seriously damaging the dead body.

Mars Five proposes the armor be separated from the corpse, so that the origins of the alloy can be studied and perhaps replicated. However, Doctor Zar believes the corpse can be reanimated via bio-electric stimulation, essentially “resurrecting” the creature into undead form. After a long and arduous ethical argument, Doctor North agrees to see if the reanimated corpse can function – and perhaps relearn who it was before death.

On October 10th 2009, Doctor Zar administers the radical bio-electric surgery to the corpse, which proves very successful. The creature within the armor comes to life, and the topaz crystal at the heart of his armor becomes energized and seems to provide the corpse’s body to incredible strength and powers. Lacking a name or identity Doctor Zar dubs the creature simply as “Nebula Man”.

The creature awakens with no memories of its former life, no idea of whom or what it was before it died and no knowledge how it had come to die in the first place. Miraculously though, the creature seemed to have some basic understanding of English, as well as being thoroughly fluent in Russian. Clearly, this demonstrated some previous knowledge of Earth and its languages, and although his memory was largely damaged from the bioelectric surgery – he was able to understand basic human etiquette.

Despite basic understanding of language and Earth custom, the total lack of identity or ego in Nebula Man can make him awkward. He is very naïve and has a somewhat passive personality. If he is summoned to battle - he does not fight because he enjoys it - but rather, simply because he is told to. Doctor North observed that Nebula Man is very “childlike”, with all the innocence and curiosity of a young child. He also is very kind and apparently extremely loyal to Alpha Squad. He follows their orders without question.

Powers

The combination of Nebula Man’s high-tech armor and his accelerated artificial metabolism makes him impervious to pain – and very resistant to all kinds of force. He can be shot with bullets and absorb all kinds of kinetic energy with little damage to his armor or body. He is also able to summon celestial energy, created through arcane means, via the topaz crystal at the center of his suit. This provides him with the ability to deal devastating blows. With this additional power-boost from the crystal, he can smash through steel with a single punch. Mars Five has noted that the gaseous particles that form around his fists when he delivers his blows match the properties of the Orion Nebula where he was discovered. Both Mars Five and Doctor Zar struggle to find a reason why this is so, and cannot explain the origin of his super-powers at all.

Despite his enormous strength and invulnerability, Nebula Man is not tireless. After a large exertion of physical energy, he can tire easily and weaken. Mars Five believes this is because he is not “naturally” alive and instead has to be “refueled” with bio-electric stimulation from the topaz crystal. Nebula Man was probably far more powerful when actually alive, than he is in this artificial "undead" form.

It has been assumed that if the crystal were somehow removed, Nebula Man would slowly wither and die.

Because Nebula Man is kept “alive” through artificial means, he requires no food, no water and has no bodily functions. He is however, constantly cold, unable to keep himself warm, even on the hottest days. His suit attempts to compensate for this, keeping the body underneath the armor at an unnaturally warm temperature. The armor itself exudes a cold aura as it pumps cold air out and draws warmth in. Still, Nebula Man will often shiver from being cold – and he wears a thick scarf over his mouth and face to keep his face as warm as possible.

COMIC BOOK COVERS

Issue 4 of Nebula Man documents his search for a personal home - and finding it at the stroke of midnight, while gazing at the moon.
Issue 5 of Nebula Man crosses-over with Issue 19 of Alpha Squad. It deals with acquiring a Transit Beam, so that Alpha Squad can reliably travel from their dimension to Doctor Zar's Earth-Delta.
In Issue 6, Nebula Man fights the steward of Earth-Delta, the nefarious Lord-K! This issue crosses-over with Issue 20 of Alpha Squad.
First Issue of Nebula Man documents his arrival via Project Bifrost.
In the second issue of Nebula Man, he is pitted against a Serpent Enforcer of the Tsoo involving some stolen magical ink, a story that ties to a story involving Chaos Red.
Issue 3 of Nebula Man where Neb's involvement with the mystery surrounding Chaos Red's tattoo ink and the rage of an arcane cult known as the Tsoo continues.
