Shinsektor is a genetically engineered insectoid human bio-weapon, created by Dr. Hideo Langstrom. His psyche and body have constantly evolved and stabilized over his years in Paragon City, though at the moment he appears more or less stable.
In terms of the game engine, Shinsektor is a Katana/Regen scrapper that was created by @Vangelus a few weeks after City of Heroes launched in the summer of 2004.

Personality
As Hongo Ichimonji, he was a caring father and family man. His work in the medical field was derived from an intent to help others. Unfortunately, much of Hongo's original personality was distorted in the operation that transformed him into Shinsektor.
During the first period of Shinsektor's life, his psyche was divided into 'aspects' among several programmed mental protocols. These were his Base Mind (Innocence), Malavus (Malice, Ego, primarily negative components), Guardius (Pure good with no judgment or sense of right/wrong), and The Scholar (all that remained, crippled by the operation and extremely weak). Many of his first adventures dealt with the shifting balance of power in his mind, though it has been stated that none of the aspects were completely separate personalities. In interaction, he shifted from nearly whimsical curiousity to cold, conjunctionless, grim speech over these months.
Later, Shinsektor's psyche gained a new aspect: the spirit of Marielle Labeau (Humanity). Giving up her individual existence, Marielle became the unifying component of his mind. With her sacrifice, Shinsektor's personality was made whole, and the protocols that divided it were erased. He also became far more personable, almost de-maturing from the stoic tones that preceded this change.
The final major transition came when Shinsektor decided to restore the shattered memories of his past through intense meditation. Though much of his former life was completely gone, many memories (both happy and sad) were restored.
Currently, Shinsektor is completely sane if rather eccentric. He cares deeply for his friends and the safety of innocents. He also takes his 'hobbies' quite seriously, and tends to become very defensive if scrutinized over them. He is also very adverse to major change, once taking the death of others extremely badly. However, he now pushes many truly intense emotions into the back of his mind, due to an incident where he and many of his friends were put at risk due to his overreactive nature.
The most common trait of Shinsektor's personality is his tendency towards somewhat blunt and strongly opinionated statements. Several times, this has led him into arguments with others that could have been avoided were a single word or statement not uttered by himself or those around him. He is also a bit of a kleptomaniac, which has led him into both arguments and legal trouble many times.
Powers and Abilities
Internal Weapons Production
Part of Shinsektor's bio-weapon design was to allow for him to generate his weapons within his own body. As his physicality changes over time, so do the specifics of his weapons production.
Sektorblade
Shinsektor's main weapon is an organic sword that grows and deploys from one of the many unique organs in his body. Originally produced in his torso and deployed from a spinal slit, a physical mutation caused Sektorblade production to move into his wrists.A Sektorblade is a veined, chitinous, and katana-like weapon. The grip physically bonds to Shinsektor's palm while in use. As a Sektorblade slices into an opponent, it draws out and filters through fluids it comes in contact with, transferring a final mixture into Shinsektor's body via the grip. Originally, this was his main source of nutrition.
Sektorblade production appears to be limitless, though producing more than one at a time has been known to leave Shinsektor incredibly exhausted. The physical process itself takes only moments.
Sektorneedles
The Sektorneedle gland first matured when the Malavus Protocol awoke and went on a rampage in the summer of 2004. Since then, they have remained a part of Shinsektor's biological arsenal.
The needles themselves are thin and chitinous. Their plate alignment and internal musculature are akin to a hypodermic needle's functionality.
Four main types of Sektorneedles have appeared so far:
- Poisonous: The first Sektorneedle to appear. Several heroes were subject to these, including Ireland Love, The Vagabond Mage, Kivuli, and Ryko Nailo. Symptoms varied slightly from case to case, but all could be summarized as suffering from extreme and sudden nausea.
- Acidic: Bearing a corrosive payload, Shinsektor uses these to burn through alloys, deliver a sudden and surprising pain to opponents, or rather cruelly interrogate people he does not outwardly care for very much.
- Sedative: A natural evolution of his Poisonous Sektorneedles. The sedative is often of a varying potency, with a single application having anywhere from several seconds to several hours of effect. It has been the case that unless given time to internally prepare the Sedative Sektorneedle, it will not have a very lengthy effect.
- Healing: Another natural evolution of his Poisonous Sektorneedles. A chemical that bore traces of his own regenerative DNA would be injected into a wound with near-instant results. However, Shinsektor ceased creating these when he realized the nature of their ability. Of those who have been subject to Healing Sektorneedles, only Krickette's body still bears traces of Shinsektor's DNA, due to the large number of injections she received. As of the major Sektorcide injection, Shinsektor no longer appears capable of creating Healing Sektorneedles.
Genetic 'Copy Protection'
Shinsektor's creator was very protective of his work, to the point of creating a form of genetic "copy protection". When a Sektorblade or Sektorneedle is out of contact with Shinsektor's body for several seconds, it completely disintegrates, leaving no usable trace of DNA behind.
The process was incomplete when Shinsektor arrived in Paragon City, as Shinsektor's physical body could still leave trace DNA samples in its wake through damage or bloodletting. After his major physical restructuring, Shinsektor's body no longer sheds any cell or DNA matter.
To date, the only remaining samples of Shinsektor's DNA that are not in the hands of himself or Dr. Hideo Langstrom are from his original physicality, and are both degraded and unstable.
Physical Regeneration
Shinsektor's body has displayed incredibly rapid physical regeneration capabilities. He is able to re-attach disembodied parts in seconds (though this sometimes requires assistance), heals minor wounds almost instantly, and once was seen to even survive decapitation.
The nature of his regenerative powers is not clear. It appears to be in part due to the incredibly hardy nature of his cell structure. As of his major physical restructuring, Shinsektor has theorized that his body's cells may no longer be able to die. However, this directly contradicts the self-disposing nature of the Sektorblade and Sektorneedles.
Enhanced Leg Musculature
As his original design was based on a fusion of human and grasshopper, Shinsektor's legs are incredibly powerful.
Most commonly, this is demonstrated in his powerful leaping ability. However, Shinsektor has also used his enhanced leg musculature to deliver unexpectedly potent (and wholly unsportsmanlike) kicks to the groin or face of an adversary.
Physical Transformation
Originally, each of Shinsektor's mental protocols would cause a complete physical transformation when one took control.
After the unification of his mind, Shinsektor was briefly able to will the transformations himself, with each one causing a minor shift in the focus of his psyche.
During Questing Eagle's capture by Crey forces, Shinsektor somehow burned out his ability to transform. He assembled a cybernetic neural impulse feed to try and force further transformations, but it took less than a month for the entire system to suffer a meltdown and ignite. This left Shinsektor literally in flames for over 3 weeks before he suffered a total physical shutdown due to the prolonged trauma.
After his major physical restructuring, Shinsektor lost all of his alternate forms and gained a new one. Known as his "Knight Form", Shinsektor transforms into it for most high-risk missions. The transformation thickens his chitin while giving it a brighter hue of green, and seals many of the cracks between plates. It also deploys a set of wings that allow Shinsektor to achieve moderate flight speeds. Also, the 'Knight Form' causes Shinsektor's body to resonate with a bright glow. It is possible that the Knight Form's appearance reflects Shinsektor's subconscious desired self-image.Icarus Energy
After the introduction of the Sektorcide chemical to his body, Shinsektor unknowingly began to gain Icarus Energy manipulation abilities.
Currently, these manifest in three notable ways:
- Heightened senses and vision
- Icarus Energy optic beams
- Icarus Energy torrents, thrown from the wrists
Known only to Dr. Hideo Langstrom and Carloff Seggwiss is the one event in which a major Icarus Energy surge manifestation occurred, shortly after the largest Sektorcide injection. During the surge, wings of pure Icarus Energy burst from Shinsektor's shoulders as he used unknown means to nearly incinerate the Crey operatives nearby. The second stage of the event resulted in the destruction of two of the Sektor Protectors, along with the removal of Carloff Seggwiss's hand. After this, the surge subsided, leaving Shinsektor with only hazy memories of what happened.
Thus far, the true nature of Icarus Energy is unknown.
