The Strange Testimony of Edward A. Chesterfield, Explorer

"It was the morrow of Thursday when the expedition hit an unfortunate snag -- a floating structure of ice. Fortunately the good seaman at the wheel was able to steer us clear enough to avoid major damage, but we were tangled hoplessly in the strange crystal spires of that formed the strange object...

But stranger still than the shape of it, a shape that defies proper definition, was the sense of harrowing dread that came over the crew -- especially young Emma, daughter to my navigator, who had come along as transport from her private boarding school. She encouraged us to free ourselves from this iceberg and make haste as soon as possible.

And yet, the men felt drawn to the ice... and to the dark shapes we saw embedded inside. Some felt perhaps it was pirate treasure, or some archaeological find that would make our fame echo for generations. Against Emma's protests, we chipped our way into the ice...

...and then, the madness that overtook us as the strange, pointy-eared fellows emerged, and then horrible abominations, things that pulled at the edges of sanity simply to gaze up them... more figures than could possibly have truly been within such a small ice berg. I heard a scream and was astonished to find it was my own...

If not for Emma, who somehow had transformed her boarding school uniform into some sort of fantastical dress as she hurled bolts of pure, shining light at our new enemies, we would have been done for. But Emma said she only scattered them... that they would be back. And with them they would bring the sleepers from beneath the waves, the ones who sleep beyond death, for in strange times even death may die..."

Enter the Dark Cosmos

The Dark Cosmos is an ancient race of strangely handsome creatures, generals for an army whose sole purpose is to crack open the edges of reality and allow the Old Ones to pour forth into our plane. They worship and idolize a wide variety of strange horrors, and are actively working to prepare the world for their coming, to bleed joy from Pure Hearts and to introduce an age-long madness that will pave the way for the future.

Standing against them are a variety of magically endowed warrior children of light (generally known as Magical Girls) who have the power to stave off their darkness. The Dark Generals are sworn to destroy or seduce these girls to madness, but have no particular hatred of them... it's simply one huge chess game, with the overall players being so alien and indifferent that the entertaining characters involved are trivial in comparison.

Although the Dark Generals are powerful, rarely do they get their hands dirty; more likely they'll send Dark Magical Girls whom they have corrupted, or the extradimensional abominations known as the Youma, to do the real fighting while the General sits back to sip cognac and listen to classical music while driving a sacrificial victim to the brink of lunacy.

Having only been freed from their frozen dimensional prison within the last few years, the Dark Cosmos are still rallying their forces and growing their numbers. It may be some time before they are enough of a threat to plunge this plane into darkness. But the Old Ones are patient. No matter how long it takes, they believe in their inevitable triumph... and our inevitable doom.
