Origins
Perhaps it was a happier time. Certainly, the child that was named Mercy had, at the time of her birth, two loving committed parents. Her father, Evan, was a successful industrialist and entrepenuer in the Alternative Energy sector, and her mother, Maralice, was a noted research chemist.
They settled in the Steel Canyon neighborhood of Paragon City and prospered during the massive growth of the alternative energy sector of the past decade. Evan's work on portable solar concentrators and collectors made his work useful in numerous applications. His breakthrough was a device that increased the efficiency of storage and collection of solar energy in a man-portable format. The solar capacitor that he created (designed in concert with his wife), was at least 10 times more efficient and powerful than anything existing to date. This resulted in a contract with the PPD, and several other goverment agencies to supply his devices to municipal vehicles and personnel. This was the apex of his success.
However, working with solar energy quickly made its limits clear. Weather variability, urban sprawl and other factors reduced the effectiveness of his devices. Evan was unsatisfied and was determined to find a more concentrated and ubiquitous power source.
Also, his designs were being copied by his competitors, and he was being undercut by powerful corporate combines like Crey Industries. If he didn't come up with another "winner", his business was bound to fail.
Descent
If Evan Williams had a flaw, it was pride. He was determined not to fail. He threw himself into his work, spending long hours in his lab, trying one solution after another, all in a vain attempt to exceed his limits. Nothing worked.
Life in the Williams house became fractured and difficult. Evan's failure began to follow him home, haunting his steps, weighing down on him, making his shoulders stoop and his temper flare. He became abusive and callous, starting arguments with no provocation and resisting his wife and daughter's attempts to pacify him. And then one day, everything changed.
Evan came home early from work. Maralice quickly hid the bottle and empty glasses and came to meet him. She had committed to raising their daughter and quit her position at his firm.
"Darling, I have the most wonderful news, I've solved it!" he crowed, his eyes shining with triumph and perhaps, relief.
Maralice blinked, surprised. "Why, that's, that's-" she sputtered and felt tears prick at her eyes.
"Now, please darling, no tears, everything is going to be fine now. I promise. You'll see."
