"The real measure of a hero isn't what they're willing to do, but what they're willing to sacrifice." |
Mobius Knight is the alias of Kyle Masters, a hero in Paragon City.
Concept
Mobius Knight was initially conceived solely as the vehicle of a joke (the grown man who receives phone calls from his incredibly overbearing mother), and was intended only for use while another character (Paladin Phoenix) was unavailable for story reasons. However, surprisingly, Mobius managed to make a few friends, and quickly developed into a full-blown character with a number of interesting aspects. Before long, Mobius took over the main character spot from Paladin Phoenix.
Although originally designed only as a joke character, Mobius Knight stuck to the basic idea of a "natural" hero. I determined at the outset that he would not be "super" in any way, and super reflexes seemed like a good fit for that. Katana was chosen because a knight generally needs a sword, and I wanted to try something other than Broadsword. He's evolved over time into a fairly complex character.
Affliations
Mobius Knight has met a variety of people during his career as a hero.
Family
- He is married to Terra Skye. Kyle carries a part of Terra's soul in his own as the result of an unfortunate incident that nearly killed him. They were married on May 16, 2009, after which they went on their honeymoon to the International Space Station.
- Inserting himself into a conversation at the D as he tends to do, Kyle managed to make the acquaintance of Emerie Waters. He's been convinced of her origin, especially after it was discovered that she's an accidental dimension hopper. Although he once promised to get her back home no matter what it takes, her desire to stay in Paragon City has made him back off on his promise (this would be a first). He officially adopted her in May 2009.
- Recently, Kyle was introduced to Pan Masters, a 19-year-old woman who shared his last name. This was not a coincidence: she is his adopted daughter, from the future. She claims that in 2016, Kyle fought her alien father after discovering that he was beating her at the age of two, and was successful. By the customs of the alien race, Kyle was then given Panmarrion to raise as his own. Seventeen years later, in 2033, her father came back, and Kyle ordered to to travel back in time to 2009 and stay put until further notice. Considering Kyle hates time travel, he can't help but wonder exactly what was going on that he would tell his adopted daughter to do something he so abhors.
Friends
- Kyle is friends with Sharlisse, who sometimes seems to be friends with everyone. They meet on occasion and discuss the hero life, and she and Terra are also friends. When the three of them get together, Kyle tends to receive a lot of unwanted advice. She seems to be fond of poking him in the sensitive matters verbally, trying to rile him up for laughs.
- Kyle is friends with Hephaestus 1, the giant cyborg process server and private investigator/hero. They used to work together on the popular TV show Serv'd, but after a particularly troubling incident, they had a falling out, and Kyle quit the show in disgrace (though the reasoning was never aired). They are still amicable, however.
- XM Radio is one of Kyle's good friends. Kyle frequently calls him X, and they hang out together when they can find the time, which is rare enough. Kyle is also friendly with X's brother, FM Stereo, who he calls V.
- Kyle has an ongoing friendship with the increasingly bizarre Ibuki Takahura, whom he affectionately calls "Bookey". Although at first they thought little of each other, after Mobius Knight helped her with a personal quest, they became much more amicable. Kyle views her a something of a crazy younger sibling, though he takes care not to act too protective of her. Whenever she is in trouble or needs help, however, he's quick to come to her aid, whether she thinks she needs it or not.
- Kyle and Luficia are friends, and used to work together in the Inhibitors. Kyle is somewhat put off by the fact that Lufi appears younger than him, but is so much more skilled and powerful, though he doesn't say anything about it. Her constantly upbeat attitude and joie de vivre can penetrate even his darkest moods, and he considers her both a powerful ally and a good friend. Sadly, she's disappeared from Paragon as of late, and despite his best efforts, Kyle can't locate her.
- Kyle considers Taxibot Theta to be one of his best friends, although they've had more than a few disagreements in the past. Sam hasn't been seen much lately, as he's trying to become an extradimensional master. Or something. He was Kyle's best man at his wedding.
Unknowns
- Kyle has a bizarre relationship with Enerix. On the one hand, he claims to hate her guts, and actively tried to kill her once. On the other hand, he hands around with her frequently, and has rushed to her defense and shown genuine concern for her safety in the past. Although he would never admit it, he views Enerix as something approximately equal to a friend, and he has undertaken a number of hardships in trying to protect her. The best possible description is that they're dysfunctional siblings, though both with vehemently deny any such affectation.
- Kyle was integral in rescuing Lunarwind from the clutches of Jacob Nisumari (AKA In Control) and an enigmatic being known as Zomerana Angel. She doesn't exactly treat him like a friend, but he is working on something that involves her that he refuses to discuss with anyone, even Terra. Which is funny, because he hates Lunarwind, and she's not exactly enamored with him. He refuses to give up on his quest to "save" her, even against her explicit wishes. She recently passed away, but Kyle refuses to believe that his efforts are meaningless, and is looking for a way to help her, even posthumously.
- Sparrowshade was almost dragged into a conversation at Pocket D. A disgraced former Olympic athlete, Kyle regards her with a mixture of trust and suspicion. She tries not to talk about herself too much, but it's obvious (at least to Kyle) that she's hiding some significant things behind her typically impassive mask.
Enemies
- Kyle hates Mina (AKA Zomerana Angel) and Jacob Nisumari (AKA In Control) with a passion. It seems to stem from their incredible antipathy and sociopathic tendencies, but really it's because they seem to delight in tormenting him, and successfully manipulated him in the past. Unfortunately, because Mina is essentially immortal and Jacob is currently magically bound to Lunarwind in such a way that any damage to him is transmitted to her, Kyle is powerless to act against either of them. If he could find a way to kill either one, he would most likely try.
Supergroup:
- Kyle was once affiliated with the Inhibitors, but he left their membership during his fate adventure. He is once again a free agent.
Personality
Kyle is a fairly typical person, prone to changes in mood as situations develop or are altered. He usually doesn't hate anyone or anything in particular, nor is he devoted to an ideal.
Kyle has been in the hero business long enough that he is usually unfazed by death threats, and he frequently laughs off attempts by others to intimidate or scare him. He refuses to publicly show fear unless it is warranted, and he has found that villians really hate when their plans or threats are laughed at. Therefore, he does it as much as possible. This has earned him a reputation of being unable or unwilling to take anything seriously, but those who know him know that he can be overly serious when necessary.
Kyle has demonstrated a willingness to "cheat", winning battles or overcoming obstacles by any means necessary. As he has become fond of saying, when the matter is life or death, a win is a win, no matter how you get it. This generally does not put him in good standing with other heroes, who frequently view his "at any cost" methods with disdain. He has also shown that he can and will break the law to accomplish his goals. He has made ethically questionable decisions that he's not proud of, but that he determined were necessary. He refuses to call himself a "hero" most of the time, simply because he feels that the title isn't properly descriptive. He is, however, a good man at his core. But then, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
If there's one thing that he hates more than anything else, it's being manipulated. If he discovers that someone is manipulating him, his vengeance is either quick and ill-advised, or slower and deadlier. Frequently, he begins working against the manipulator, whether in secret or in public, in an attempt to undermine whatever plan he helped set in motion. He doesn't care if the person manipulating him had good intentions, either: good and evil are equally deserving of vengeance.
Family
Kyle, surprisingly, has a normal family.
His father, Jackson Masters, is a former military man, now a travel agent working in Florida. Although his father does have a mutant gene that grants him powers (in his case, an extremely hardy metabolism that manifests with speedy healing and a powerful immune system), he does his best to live a "normal" life. Kyle frequently turns to his dad for advice, and for help when he needs to get that perfect vacation spot at a good deal. Jackson is extremely supportive of Kyle's decision to be a hero.
His mother, Lettie Masters, is an overbearing and protective mother. She has a work-at-home business, the details of which Kyle has never been particularly inclined to discover. Although initially demanding of Kyle, and concerned for his safety, he eventually told her to back off, which, to his surprise, she did. Their relationship is now more amicable, though not entirely lacking in antagonism. Her mutant gene is dormant, and never manifested into an actual power. She does not approve of Kyle's decision to be a hero, but recognizes his choice and grudgingly supports him.
His sister, Kylee Masters is five years younger, and a genius. Shortly after Kyle left Florida for Seattle, Kylee was involved in a car accident that left her crippled, unable to use her legs at all. She is confined to a wheelchair. She has recovered from the initial bout of depression and learned to thrive despite her handicap, and has demonstrated a inclination to remain in the wheelchair, despite the availability of alternative methods for reversing her paralysis.
Kylee is incredibly smart, a result of her activated mutant gene, and is dedicated to supporting Kyle's hero endeavors. She had made a variety of technological devices that he has used in the past. She knew about Kyle's intent to be a hero shortly before he left Florida for the second time to go to Paragon City. She occasionally lives vicariously through his hero actions, always asking for updates and stories of his exploits. Kyle is always glad to indulge her. She's the only person in his family with whom he keeps close contact.
Equipment
Kyle has no superpowers. However, his equipment does provide a number of advantages.
Ocean Sword
Although Kyle's primary weapon looks like a normal blade, it is actually magical in nature, deriving great power from enchantments woven long ago. The blade is supernaturally sharp, capable of cleaving metal and bone with little trouble, and strikes with power beyond the simple muscle force behind the blow. When fighting against human enemies, Kyle fights with the blunt side of his weapon, but technological, magical, or undead foes frequently find they are victims of terrible cutting attacks.
The blade occasionally seems to ripple like water, particularly when Kyle's emotional or mental state is chaotic. It has been demonstrated that Kyle cannot see this happen, even when informed of it. He carries the blade in a sheath attached to his belt, and it is his main weapon.
The Ocean Sword is so named because it is supposedly as immutable and unchanging as the ocean itself, though, like the ocean, there are hidden currents that are constantly changing. Changes to the Ocean Sword's powers are possible, but slow. In particular, the sword will develop new powers to protect the wielder from frequently encountered negative effects.
The Ocean Sword employs a variety of powers in Kyle's defense. These powers currently include:
- Complete immunity to mind control (as the result of an artificially induced psychotic break)
- Ability to dispel illusions (as the result of an adventure involving Lunarwind)
- Extreme resistance to corrupting effects (as the result of using the Twilight blade)
- Unreadable aura (innate power of the sword)
The potential for the sword to develop more powers to protect Kyle is essentially limitless, though he has to be exposed to a specific threat for a long period of time for any powers to develop (which is why the list is currently short). The protections of the sword are imparted directly on the wielder, and as far as anyone is concerned, Kyle is simply naturally gifted. The protections from the sword are active even when Kyle does not hold the weapon, though it is possible to magically sever the connection and remove his protections.
The Ocean Sword also has the innate ability to rewrite an individual's fate, though it rarely does so. This "Fate Re-Weaving" is undetectable by any kind of normal means, and only extremely advanced identification spells of immense power will be able to uncover this information. The sword can no longer affect Kyle in this way, however, as he has been removed from the effects of fate. It still works on other people, though it would require that Kyle know about this particular aspect.
The Ocean Sword, as it turns out, was created with some kind of fate-like material, a godly essence or something of that nature, specifically to defy fate. Unable to track the blade through the ages, the being that controlled fate instead attempted to manipulate things to such an effect that the blade would eventually be destroyed, thus eliminating the threat to fate's grand design. Although that particular entity in control of fate was destroyed, the sword was destroyed shortly afterwards as well. However, the protections and effects that it imparted to Kyle while he wielded it remain.
Twilight
A black blade with a golden hilt, Twilight is a powerful weapon capable of creating and sealing dimensional rifts. Kyle acquired this sword after quite literally fighting through Hell for it, in order to save Terra Skye.
Twilight's main purpose is to open and close dimensional rifts, and its ability to do so is nearly unmatched. Originally designed as a way to seal dangerous entities or creatures, Twilight also doubles as an extremely powerful sword in and of itself. It is capable of reshaping itself to a form more suited to the wielder; for Kyle, that form is a katana not unlike the Ocean Sword. The ability to open dimensional rifts is governed by the user's desire; all Kyle has to do is picture where he wants to go, and the sword can "tear" a rift in space to that location.
Twilight's incredible power has been kept in check by the inability of the user to wield it for any significant period of time. Twilight is essentially entropy given form, and powerfully corrupts the wielder over time. The corruption is unique to the wielder: some may find their muscles atrophying rapidly, others may find their mental faculties decaying, and still others may find their sense of right and wrong eroding.
The sword itself was destroyed during Kyle's quest to save reality. However, when the blade shattered, Terra, Emerie and Kyle himself all noticed a black mist travelling from the blade into Kyle's body. This energy manifested itself as dark energy wrapping around his hands at times. He had no control over it, and was unsure if it retained the dimensional portal abilities of the original sword. The energy was eventually found to be horribly corrupting, nearly destroying Kyle before it was forcibly removed.
Fateless Blade
After losing both his magical blades, Kyle found himself weaponless. He commissioned a new blade to be created, insisting that it not be magical in any way. It took several days, but he eventually took possession of his new sword. Fateless, as the name etched just above the handguard proclaims it to be, is a high quality sword, but possesses no magical or special abilities. It took several days for Kyle to get used to the weight (since both the Ocean Sword and Twilight were supernaturally light), but he hasn't lost any ability.
Armor
Being a "normal" in a city of superpowers is dangerous, and Kyle has taken steps to minimize that danger by procuring various pieces of armor. He is normally seen wearing his armored jacket and pants, which are bulky and really don't provide all that much protection, especially from the stronger, more supernatural foes. However, the body armor does protect him from small arms fire, and generally can mitigate the damage from melee attacks, turning a bone-crushing blow into a "merely bruising" one. Kyle frequently has to fix or replace the armor from combat damage, though he seems to have a limitless supply. The armor itself is unique, providing more protection than spectra fiber armor, using fibers developed by his genius sister.
The armor is enchanted to resist damage. Terra Skye wove powerful magic into the very material of the armor, giving it resistance to all forms of damage, and greatly reducing the need to repair the armor over time. Although the armor can still be damaged or destroyed, the threshold for such damage to appear is extremely high. However, damage still "bleeds" through; a knife may not cut the armor, but Kyle himself will still bleed. As a result, the armor provides only the protection of the armor itself, and the magic that prevents it from being damaged is confined to the armor. The armor also has a high resistance to more general "damage", such as stains and smells, which is particularly useful during sewer missions. Although the armor gives off a magical aura, it is extremely faint, and often overlooked, as the enchantment isn't designed to protect the wearer, only the clothing.
Kyle's original set of armor was almost completely destroyed during the retrieval of Twilight. He had another set made and enchanted by Terra.
The armor is ever more useless as he tackles more powerful enemies. Recently, he's begun fighting without the armor, to see if that gives him a tactical advantage, though he still wears it more often than not.
Cell Phone
Kyle's cell phone is more than a simple communication device; it also doubles as his connection to the hero job. In addition to receiving normal calls, the cell phone can hack into previously established communication lines (such as temporary team connections), scan the police band, and provide limited access to certain computer systems. Despite the advances, the cell phone looks remarkably normal. Because he prefers to use the phone, Kyle does not carry a standard communication device.

Kyle is a normal human, and his abilities are all within the upper limit of human limitations.
Sword Style
Kyle's sword style is unnamed. He created it himself, putting together the basic motions after months of practice and evolving the style from there. It occasionally seems clumsy to observers, but it is actually effective, allowing him both fluidity and strength from standard and bizarre positions. That's not to say the style is perfect: he's frequently had to change, update, revisit or completely remove different techniques when they proved to be disastrous, but the fundamentals of his style are sound.
He has made a solemn vow never to teach his style to anyone else, though he doesn't explain why. According to Pan Masters, he breaks that vow in the future in order to teach it to his as-yet-unborn daughter Erin.
Quick Reflexes
Kyle has always been agile, and he is naturally capable of quick movements. Although he lacks any kind of superpower advantage, he is able to avoid damage through a combination of quick movements and sharp vision. Although this can seem supernatural at times (such as when he dodges bullets), it is simply an extension of his natural abilities and training. As his training continues, his agility and reflex continue to improve. He is currently able to avoid most projectile attacks, and in a brawl he is almost untouchable. When he does take damage, he experiences an adrenaline rush that allows him to move even faster, avoiding attacks that would normally hit him. The more seriously he's injured, the more focused he becomes.
Kyle sees nothing odd about his reflexive abilities, viewing it as simply good sense: when you're in the way of danger, get the hell out of the way.
Emergency Medic
Kyle gets injured on the job. Due to the fact that he is only human, he regularly takes medical equipment with him whenever he is out patrolling the streets. Although he has never really received any "formal" training in medicine, he has proven quite proficient at patching his own minor wounds. This usually gives him enough time to get to the hospital for more extensive surgery, when necessary.
Kyle doesn't readily reveal just how much emergency medicine he knows if he can help it. As a result, he frequently surprises other people when he performs major field surgery without even hesitating. One of the greatest limitations of his skill is that he cannot treat himself for anything except minor injuries. He can talk others through treatment, though he has never needed to do so.
His medical knowledge was supplied by his sister, using one of her devices to upload medical knowledge right into his brain.
Slippery Mind
As a result of the magic contained within the Ocean Sword, Kyle has the unique characteristic of mind immunity. Although he can be put to sleep, stunned, or staggered by direct mental attacks, he is immune to all forms of mind-control. This protection apparently has been upgraded, enabling him to resist any mind-reading attempts without conscious control over the process. Considering the fact that he doesn't know about this particular protection, he simply thinks that he's that good.
Unreadable Aura
Kyle's aura has been described as static; regardless of his emotional or physical state, his aura never changes. Unlike most humans, who have a multi-colored aura that fluxuates with their emotional state, Kyle's aura is an unreadable gray. This can be disconcerting to those that read auras, but further examination will reveal that there is nothing wrong with him; he simply cannot be read.
Fateless
Kyle has no future. To be more accurate, he has no future that can be foreseen. He is an anomoly; a human being without any predestination or fate, without the ability to see even a few seconds into his immediate future. Even more curious is the fact that his past events are equally obscured from the same fortune tellers.
Kyle doesn't leave any noticable trace in the course of history. To a fortune teller, a fate reader, or any similar prognostication specialist, it is as if the events he describes as initiating simply happened, with no influence on his part. Indeed, it is as if he doesn't exist to the currents of time. At least one person claimed that he was entirely non-existant, which was disconcerting.
Although he doesn't know it, this is the most powerful effect of the Ocean Sword, completely freeing him from the chains of fate. He is capable of acting as he would like, with no predestination. Why the Ocean Sword saw fit to do this is remains unknown.
Soulless Survival
Kyle has had his soul damaged on numerous occasions, and completely removed at least once, with very little noticeable affect on his well-being. Although it's not exactly a comfortable experience for him, he is capable of surviving a complete removal of his soul, as long as his soul remains intact. He can also sustain significant amounts of damage to his soul with succumbing. It is not known if this is a mystical effect, or if it is simply a manifestation of his determination to succeed despite all odds.
Entirely Human
Not an ability per se, but odd enough that it deserves to be noted. Kyle's ancestry, at least three generations back through both parents, has been associated with a mutant gene that as resulted in a wide array of powers. Although not every person in his family tree has manifested some type of power, they have all carried the mutant gene without fail.
Kyle, however, is unique in that he is not a carrier of the gene. While not technically impossible, the chance of such an event happening randomly is extremely slim. He is the first and thus far only person in his family tree to be completely normal genetically, though he does not think it is especially strange.
In addition, although his armor has been enchanted by Terra Skye, and his swords are obviously magical in nature, Kyle has absolutely no talent for manipulating magical energy, despite his efforts. He has no technological advantage, no scientific mishaps, no innate advantages beyond his training.
In short, Kyle is completely and thoroughly human, without any particular advantages whatsoever. Therefore, the manifestation of his stranger abilities, seen above, are even more notable.
Scars and Acquired Traits
Mark of Hell
Kyle has literally been to Hell and back. Despite surviving the incident, he has acquired the unique taint of someone who has been to Hell. Though technically not detectable by the standard five senses, some people have been able to "smell" the taint, while others have been able to "see" it. In spite of repeated efforts, this particular mark simply will not go away.
Hand Burn
Usually unseen, Kyle has a significant and painful-looking burn on the palm of his right hand. Acquired during the attempt to kill Enerix, he has chosen not to have the burn properly treated, instead letting it scar. It is quite visible, and difficult not to notice when shaking hands.
History
Kyle Masters never intended to be a hero, it just kind of worked out that way.
"It all started when..."
In late srping 2004, while walking his sister home from school (his car had recently been totaled in an accident that was totally not his fault!), the two of them came under attack from a number of armed thugs. The thugs grabbed Kylee, which kind of irked Kyle. He attacked the thugs with whatever was handy, which happened to be a stick, and was quickly beaten within an inch of his life. However, his rapid attack had distracted the punks long enough for Kylee to get away, and the two of them managed to escape with their lives.
Kyle was in the hospital for three weeks, recovering from near-fatal injuries and forced to endure the biting commentary on his "senseless action" from his over-protective and overbearing mother. When he finally made it out of the hospital, he was forced to stay at home for another three weeks as his mother "took care" of him. After completing his long recovery, Kyle left home, much to his mother's consternation.
"...a whole bunch of things happened..."
Kyle traveled to visit his aunt and uncle in Seattle, literally all the way across the country. He felt the need to get away from his mother, and Seattle seemed to be as good a place as any to go. He ended up staying with his relatives for two years, but it wasn't until he was about to return home that he learned something shocking.
Kyle's uncle, Matthew Masters, had once been a superhero, but had been forced to retire when his powers failed him during a particularly difficult fight. His back had been broken in two places, and despite the fact that he healed well, Matthew could never fight again. Kyle only discovered this by accident, stumbling (literally) into a secret room in his uncle's basement that contained a variety of souvenirs and artifacts from his heroing days.
When confronted by the evidence of his hero days, Matthew explained that he'd been forced to keep it secret by the rest of his family, in fear that the next generations of Masters children might follow the path of their uncle. Although Matthew Masters was not the only superpowered human in the family, he was the only one that had taken up the mantle of a hero to fight crime, much to the shame of the rest of his family, who believed that doing such a thing was...well, shameful.
Kyle was unhappy to learn that his mother, Matthew's sister, was the only one in the extended family who did not appear to have any superpowers at all, but Kyle was still determined to rebel against his mother and become a hero. Superpowers or not, he was going to help people the way his uncle once had. Matthew Masters disapproved, but he could see that Kyle was not going to be disuaded. Rummaging through the souvenirs of his past adventures, Matthew came up with two objects: the first was a set of goggles, and the second was an ordinary-looking blade with a beat-up old hilt. Matthew explained that he had used both during his hero days, and that he wanted Kyle to have them.
With his new equipment in tow, Kyle left Seattle to return home to Pensacola. Once there, he stopped only briefly to collect some of his possessions before leaving again, this time heading to Paragon City. His official cover story to his mother was that he had landed a job up in Rhode Island, which she seemed to believe. Shortly after arriving in Paragon, Kyle registered with City Hall as a Hero.
"...so I decided to help people."
Unfortunately, desire was not enough. Kyle quickly discovered that the gangs and criminals of Paragon City were well-armed and packed a punch. After ending up in the hospital a scant hour after receiving his hero license ("almost a record", according to the nurse), he quickly invested in some body armor. Then more body armor. Then still more body armor. It didn't save him from trips to the hospital, but it typically reduced the urgency with which he arrived.
He then took a break from the hero business to get his equipment together. He also decided that, given the fact that he was pretty much defenseless without his equipment, a cover identity wouldn't be a bad idea; it would definitely be bad to be tracked down by some gang member he'd beaten down and shot simply because he wasn't prepared. Within a few days, he landed a job as an architect's assistant in a prestigious firm in Atlas Park, and began renting an apartment in King's Row. Kyle then rescinded his hero registration at City Hall, making sure that his previous information was completely expunged, and re-registered, this time giving a hero name of Mobius Knight.
Shortly afterwards, he once again hit the streets, more heavily armored, better trained, and ready to dish out some punishment to the many gangs and villains that crowded the streets of Paragon City.
Career Highlights
Kyle gets involved in a number of adventures, usually involving someone he knows. Although he also works on the "generic" hero stuff, the following events in his career are particularly notable.
Kidnapped
Kyle was recently captured by Arachnos, as detailed in the story Mobius_Knight/Kidnapped. Though he managed to escape, the incident brought up more questions than answers. He has no idea why Arachnos is interested in him, or his equipment. He did, however, manage to stare down Lord Recluse himself (albeit it through a video monitor), and even insulted the supervillain, something he is extremely proud of, although he did almost throw up afterwards from fear. This confrontation damaged a number of Kyle's devices, most notably his old teleportation device. In addition, an overly talkative Fortunata mentioned that Kyle has "value beyond his possessions", something that he has only recently thought strange and decided to investigate.
This incident occurred particularly early in his career, before he was certified at Security Level 15.
The Stolen Blade
Several attempts to steal the Ocean Sword have all resulted in failure, and in Kyle getting extremely annoyed with a few groups, most notably the Circle of Thorns. As far as he can tell, the only thing the Circle managed to do was make his sword glow blue, and all other attempts have been swiftly thwarted. The thefts have, for the most part, stopped.
Terra Skye
Kyle is currently married to the mage Terra Skye. He seems to be happy with her, and they are frequently seen together. A mishap involving an identification spell and the Ocean Sword once bonded them in a strange way. The bond manifested in different ways, including the ability to understand each other without any type of communication, the ability to know with a high degree of certainty where the other is, and a deeper, more spiritual connection that was never fully explored. The bond itself seemed to be strengthened as the two became more involved with each other, and the limits of the bond were never tested. The bond appears to have dissolved when Kyle's soul was removed (see below).
During his attempt to kill Enerix, Kyle's soul was damaged, and Terra use a bit of her own soul to repair his. This deliberate intertwining of souls has not resulted in more serious repercussions, but it is something Kyle thinks about on occasion.
The Miss Judgement Saga
Kyle worked with various members of T.U.M.B.L.E.R. to break Miss Judgement out of Zigursky Prison. Although all wore disguises, Kyle eventually revealed his role in the mostly illegal action to Terra, who was forced by her sense of duty to arrest him for the crime. However, she then contacted a lawyer to work on his defense. Kyle was released from custody when police revealed that they had insufficient evidence to hold him any further.
This incident, as well as the following incident, occurred when Kyle was certified at approximately Security Level 20.
Crazy
Almost immediately after being released, Kyle ran from Paragon City to the Rogue Isles. Shortly afterwards, police revealed that he was wanted in the murder of three civilians: the lawyer that had represented him and two employees of Crey Industries. This resulted in Kyle's secret identity being revealed on TV, which resulted in a rapidly growing panic in his own mind, necessitating, in what made logical sense at the time, a flight from danger. Kyle stayed at the Isles for only a short time, eventually surrendering to Terra once again.
In the short time he had been away, he had developed a number of mental instabilities, including paranoia, homicidal rage, and an almost complete deterioration of his mental psyche. He was confined in a mental institution, and was kept under heavy surveillance. He frequently complained of headaches, and was generally kept mildly sedated so as to prevent injury to himself and others. His condition continued to deteriorate, as he slowly went completely insane. The only moments of true lucidity he had were when he was in close proximity Terra Skye. Even when he couldn't see her, he knew she was around, and, as a result of the bond that they shared even then, he was able to calm his mind and stave off the increasing insanity that threatened to overwhelm him.
It was discovered that he was the victim of an experiment by an as-yet-unknown group, who planted a small device deep in his brain. This device served to impair normal neurological function, and encouraged increasingly disastrous changes to the way his brain operated. The device was lodged too deeply in his brain to remove it without causing massive permanent damage and possibly death (indeed, how the device managed to get that deep without causing injury is a mystery), and his situation was deemed hopeless as the bond between himself and Terra began to lose efficacy. It seemed he was doomed to a life of increasingly powerful dementia.
However, eventually, he was "cured". It was postulated by one of the medical team that, inspired by Kyle's repeated mumblings of "zap" over and over, the judicious application of electricity could disable or destroy the device. The procedure was successful, but Kyle himself was terribly injured, as the amount of electricity applied was akin to an extended torture session. Even with advanced medical technology, it was a week before he was able to return home, and another week before he was able to hit the streets once again. To date, he has not discovered who put the device in his head, though he seems to have forgotten all about it.
The defunct device is also still in his head. He doesn't readily reveal this information.
Lunarwind
Kyle shortly afterwards became involved in T.U.M.B.L.E.R.'s search for Lunarwind, who had disappeared under mysterious circumstances. After a confrontation with an illusory Lunarwind at the Monkey Tumbler of Pocket D, he deduced that she was being tortured by someone as yet unknown to him. He quickly found out that T.U.M.B.L.E.R. had information that he required, but, unable to contact any of them, he was forced to break into their base and steal the information.
Using the information, he confronted a being known only as the Angel (AKA Zomerana Angel). T.U.M.B.L.E.R. had brokered a deal with the Angel's other half, the semi-possessed woman Mina, where, if they could convince the Angel to relinquish complete control over Mina's body, she would help in the rescue of Luna. The supergroup had been unsuccessful, and Kyle took it upon himself, for reasons he refused to clarify, to succeed where they had not. Engaging in a battle of words, Kyle managed to unhinge the extremely logical Angel by forcing her to question her absolute belief in the purity of her mission. It was enough that Mina might have a chance to gain control, but he was almost immediately forced to defend himself again the Angel's unrestrained fury. Although he was unable to defeat her, he managed to survive long enough to defy logic, the end result being that she descended even farther into her fury. She retreated with the promise to inflict pain on an unspecified captive, signaling that her purity of purpose had been corrupted, and that Mina would have an excellent chance to break the control of the distracted being and gain control of her body.
Exhausted and badly injured, Kyle retreated to the Monkey Bar in Pocket D, where he was shortly confronted by Jacob Nisumari, who had been helping the Angel. Jacob revealed that he was more than capable of releasing Luna, who, it seemed was being terribly tortured by the Angel. However, Jacob also revealed that he was magically linked to Luna, and any injury that he received would be immediately passed on to her. Despite his attempts to restrain his anger, Kyle attacked Jacob, who, apparently, was mostly immune to the pain. However, Kyle's attack was transmitted to Luna, causing him to back down rather quickly.
Satisfied, Jacob brought Luna to the D, where she arrived in extremely critical condition. Kyle attempted to get Jacob to sever the magic that bound them, but Jacob merely laughed it off, and quickly departed while Kyle began to administer to Luna's horrific wounds. After an emergency surgery session on the floor of the nightclub, Mobius was finally able to stabilize her enough to be safely transported to a hospital. Afterwards, his exhaustion caught up with him, and he nearly collapsed, barely making it home to fall unconscious in a somewhat safer environment.
However, despite the fact that he has rescued Luna, he claims that the situation is not resolved, and continues to work to as-yet-unknown ends.
Despite his belief that it was definitely the right thing to do at the time, Mina is, if not heartless, then much more apathetic towards the suffering of innocents than Angel was, and more inclined to perform evil acts. If anything, he defeated a "good" being to appease an "evil" one, effectively crushing the Angel, who was almost completely replaced by Mina. Although he knew this going in from the files he stole from T.U.M.B.L.E.R., he nevertheless is occasionally haunted by his decision to commit an evil act to pursue a good end. He seeks to help Lunarwind, despite her resistance to his aid, in order to atone for his essentially evil action.
The majority of this incident occurred when Kyle was around Security Level 25.
Twilight
Recently, Kyle has been involved in a series of events that culminated in horrific injuries and the acquisition of a sword named Twilight. The event is documented in Mobius_Knight/Twilight. Kyle generally refuses to speak about this event, though, on the advice of a psychologist, he has started opening up about his trip to Hell. He never mentions the specifics of his visit except in jest, but he still has nightmares about his trip, mostly due to the extreme psychological stress that he very nearly did not survive.
No Rest For the Wicked
Despite barely recovering from his injuries, Kyle became involved in an event involving Enerix and a mysterious woman name Rho'zh.
Evidently, Rho'zh, of the Bar'zahk Empire, has been trying to hire an assassin to kill Enerix, who was addressed as the Sor'kh. After wearing out her other options, she approached Kyle, who, with his typical inability to take any matter of life and death seriously, managed to piss her off. Although he entertained the possibility of working for her and signing her magical contract (as he and Enerix were not on the best of terms at the time), he instead ripped the contract in half, greatly frustrating Rho'zh. When she eventually moved to attack him, he struck first, and the physical damage resulted in Rho'zh's body exploding, sending her soul back to her dimension. This was non-fatal to her, but Kyle figured the matter was closed.
Eventually, Rho'zh returned and all but forced Kyle accepted the assassination contract, through various wheelings and dealings. When he used the magical stone provided (which Rho'zh stated was the only thing that could kill Scarlet), the attempt failed and backfired, as Enerix unleashed an incredible amount of energy, severely damaging the soul of everyone around her until the magical object was removed from the area.
Kyle was (understandably) assaulted numerous times by Enerix's friends this whole time, and several vowed to either kill or at least severely injure him, though they have since backed off from their threats. Kyle, on the other hand, is extremely angry at being manipulated. The way he sees it, Rho'zh, and the Bar'zakh Empire, knew exactly what would happen when he used the magical stone, that it would most likely kill anyone within a few feet of Scarlet, and he's not happy about it. He has vowed revenge against his former employers, despite his inability to see or affect them.
He has apologized to Enerix for attempting to kill her, and the two are now on uncertain grounds.
Kyle has disclosed the terms of his initial contract: if he did not accept it, the Bar'zahk Empire would attempt to kill Terra until he did. If he failed in his mission, the Empire would come after them both. However, Kyle also extracted a promise from them, namely that if they had in any way lied about the details of his mission, the contract would be revoked and he would be free to hunt down and kill any citizen of the Empire. Because the magical object he was given did not perform as explained, he considers the contract void, and he believes he is now free to pursue the natural course of action, revenge.
The Empire, however, views the events as a breach of contract and, after an encounter with Rho'zh that ended badly (she exploded again), Kyle is on guard for any attacks against himself and Terra.
The magical gem that was supposed to kill Enerix has been lost.
Despite the fact that the incident occurred almost a year ago, Kyle continues to search for a way to attack the Empire, even against Enerix's explicit wishes. Even Terra no longer believes that he intends to fight the demons.
The Inhibitors
Kyle recently joined the Inhibitors at his friend Luficia's request. Joining more out of a sense of friendship than duty, he nevertheless is extremely interested in the short-term goals of the supergroup, particularly the plans to take down Doctor Crom once and for all. However, he has made a few friends in the new supergroup already, and he is involved in the day-to-day running of the group, much to his chagrin.
Sadly, with the disappearance of Luficia, the Inhibitors have mostly fallen silent, existing in name only.
Seiken and Crom
Shortly after the Inhibitors were founded, Seiken was stolen by Doctor Crom. Despite repeated attempts to recover the sword and the jewel which contained Seiken's soul, Kyle and the Inhibitors were unsuccessful. Luficia disappeared shortly after an elaborate plan was put into motion to get both items back. Since then, both the sword and the gem have passed to many hands, and Kyle, working independently, has been working to track them both down and recover them.
Emerie Waters
Recently, Kyle has taken it upon himself to become Emerie's legal guardian, as well as her tutor and trainer. This, despite the fact that Heph was perfectly willing and able to do the same. Kyle actually stepped in and prevented Big Blue from taking on that responsibility. Emerie seemed a lot happier to have Kyle look after her than Heph, but Kyle's motivations are still a mystery, even to Terra.
Although he has made a solemn promise to get her home as soon as possible, he has also made a point (at Terra's urging) to look into schooling her, keeping her up to date with an equivalent curriculum, as well as training her in the ways of combat and heroing.
Since her home dimension has been discovered, the current plan is to use Twilight to create a dimensional rift to her home. However, Emerie refuses to return home until Kyle manages to get his soul back and settle his current business. They are both preparing for her trip home, in particular getting her cover story straight.
Discovery of Self
Without warning, Kyle was approached by a man with a job offer: work exclusively for his employers, or suffer. With no other information provided, Kyle rejected the offer, and was promptly stabbed in the leg for his trouble, then pushed off the top of a building. He suffered numerous broken bones and other injuries, but they were quickly healed. The stab wound, interestingly enough, was not: it resisted all attempts to heal it with conventional and non-conventional treatments. He left the hospital the next day with a cane, hobbling around the city for a few days. The sword itself, left behind by the mystery man, appeared to nullify any and all powers, magic, mutant, science and otherwise, in the immediate area. After multiple failed attempts at examination, Terra sealed it in a concrete box and buried it.
A few days later, after barely recovering from his wound, Kyle was again confronted by the mystery man. Refusing his offer again, Kyle was stabbed in the stomach with a dagger, and the man again departed. This time, the wound was easily healed, but the dagger had multiple layers of enchantment on it that prevented easy identification of its purpose. With a promise from the mystery man that he would only have one more chance to accept the offer, Kyle prepared for the worst. As if that wasn't enough, a slight change in personality drove Kyle to MAGI to be evaluated where he learned something particularly unpleasant: he was losing his soul.
The final confrontation was something of an anti-climax. Kyle merely forced the mystery man to trip off the building they were fighting on, mostly through luck, and die when he hit the ground a dozen storys below. However, that was only the beginning. Before he died, the man stated that Kyle was being targeted by a previously unknown organization called the Heavenly Choir due to his unique, fateless nature. Although Kyle was previously aware that his future could not be seen, this was the first time it was ever referred to as fateless. Setting aside concerns about Heavenly Choir and even his own soul, which is still missing, Kyle decided that he was tired of being the last to know about himself, and began an investigation into fate itself, and his place in it.
Saving Reality
During the course of the investigation, Moby, Terra and Emerie uncovered information about fate and the Heavenly Choir organization. As it turned out, the organization's leader, a man named Joshua, was looking to take control of fate, using the power to destroy the current reality and create a new one, with him in control, essentially becoming a god. With no opportunity to stop the leader of HC before the last possible moment, the three traveled, via Twilight, to the appointed place just after the leader arrived, only to find they were too late. Joshua had already managed to dispatch the entity controlling fate through unknown means, and was preparing to destroy reality. Terra and Emerie were blown out of existence, but Moby, thanks to his fateless nature, was able to resist the changes to the universe. A short battle erupted, in which Twilight was shattered and the Ocean Sword ceased to exist, but Kyle ultimately emerged triumphant, Joshua becoming the first person he actually killed.
However, the victory was short-lived: reality remained destroyed, and there seemed to be no one around to put it back together. With no other option, Kyle literally ascended to godhood, remade reality, and disappeared.
Terra and Emerie regained consciousness in Paragon City, seemingly the only people with knowledge of reality being destroyed and rebuilt. Terra had Kyle's mask and notepad, detailing his theories behind the recent investigation and apologizing over and over, while Emerie received his scarf.
Godhood And Fall
Kyle then disappeared from reality itself. No one knew how to bring him back, or even if it was possible, but Terra, Emerie and Felicity refused to give up on him, summoning other to help them scour various dimensions for any trace of his presence.
Eventually, after a few weeks, Terra had an unusually strong feeling that she should go to one of the piers in Talos Island. She brought along Emerie and Felicity, only to find nothing there at all. After a few minutes, Kyle literally fell from the sky and landed in the water just past the end of the pier.
He claims to have little to memory of the last few weeks, or has had trouble describing things that he could remember. However, he seems to be back to his normal, significantly less serious self, claiming that life is too short for being as overly serious as he used to be.
He did not reclaim his mask or his scarf, leaving them with Terra and Emerie respectively. He has, however, decided to get a new sword to replace the ones he lost.
Twilight and Pan
Kyle has begun to manifest dark energy tendrils from his hands. The energy is the same as the energy once contained in the Twilight blade, and he is not sure what, if anything, it does. The corruption energy doesn't seem to hurt him, nor does he seem to have any power to create dimensional portals. In those respects the energy seems entirely benign. Terra is worried that unless it is separated from him, it will adversely affect him, but her preferred method of removal, with the help of her magical order, is the one option Kyle refuses to consider, as he really hates her order.
Shortly after the dark energy manifested, Kyle received another surprise in the form of Pan Masters, his adopted daughter from the future. Although at first he was skeptical, recalling that he and Terra had promised to never let their potential children travel through time, Pan eventually convinced him that she was ordered to go back in time by his future self. Since she knew things he told to only a few people, he had little choice but to accept that she was telling the truth.
He's not sure what, if anything he's supposed to do about Pan, and coupled with the fact that she knows his future, something that's been denied to him by his fateless existence, he's having trouble resisting the temptation to find out what's going to happen in him.
Trauma
In addition to his normal obsessiveness in regards to his investigations, Kyle has recently begun focusing on his hero work to an almost pathological extreme. Although he is known for occasionally staying awake for a few days while working on an important job, he quickly developed insomnia, degenerating into extreme insomnia in March and April of 2009.
He was afraid to sleep, unable to face the nightmares that awaited him when unconsciousness set in. After two consecutive weeks of seven-day wakefulness streaks, he finally broke down and admitted to his nightmares to Emerie and Terra, who were both very supportive. Heph suggested that he might have some kind of mental disorder, perhaps even post-traumatic stress disorder, and Kyle grudgingly conceded that the cyborg might be right. He agreed to seek professional help.
He is currently seeing a therapist and trying to talk through the increasingly crazy things he done in the last two years, an outlet that he has denied himself. He was diagnosed with PTSD, which actually took a great weight off his shoulders. Whether he'll be able to recover remains to be seen.
Marriage
After a long wait, Kyle and Terra were finally officially married on May 16th, 2009. After the small ceremony and reception, Kyle unveiled his honeymoon plans; through careful planning (and a few not-altogether-legal acts) over the last six months, he had managed to finagle two spots on the International Space Station. Although technically their trip was for scientific purposes, the opportunity to travel into space does not present itself often.
Hunted
Kyle, in the normal course of his day, had run across rumors that someone was looking to kill both himself and Terra. While death threats were not unusual in the least, what made Kyle take notice was the fact that he simply could not run down the originator of the rumor. Even more disconcerting was the fact that the more he investigated, the more people were added to the apparent hit list. Soon, the list included almost all of his friends, but it didn't stop there. Names he was only passingly familiar with, people he had met very few times, and even criminals he had captured and sent to prison were on the list. And if anything, it seemed to be getting longer.
Sharlisse floated the theory, jokingly, that someone was out to kill anyone Kyle had ever met, and while it was intended as a joke, it certainly seemed to fit the criteria. Additional investigation revealed that the list was everyone he'd ever met, a fact deeply unsettling to him. Shortly after this revelation, a huge armored man began searching for Kyle, confronting Terra and Emerie in Pocket D. Although the link was never really confirmed, it was pretty obvious that the unnamed man and the hit list were related.
As it turns out, the huge man was an avatar for the god of fate, a position recently held by Kyle himself. Declaring Kyle's fateless status to be incontrovertibly disruptive to the Grand Design, fate itself had apparently decided to erase Kyle from existence entirely. The standard solution of fighting back would only delay the inevitable: fate would continue to try to end his life regardless of any temporary victory.
Still, Kyle decided he really didn't like the idea of ceasing to exist, and put into motion a plan to destroy fate's avatar. Enlisting the help of his friends, he had them construct a "fatebomb", a sort-of-explosive device intended to temporarily disrupt a localized section of fate, resulting in everyone in the blast area becoming temporarily as fateless as Kyle. With this disruption, fate's avatar was confused and unable to accurately predict the actions of Kyle's friends, resulting in his defeat.
Unfortunately, Kyle's plan hinged on the support of a not-altogether-trustworthy contact of his who, without informing Kyle, perverted the original plan into something significantly illegal, resulting in multiple actions of criminal intent on the part of his friends in constructing the fatebomb. In addition, the contact didn't explain the reasoning behind the plan, making it seem incredibly dangerous and potentially disaster-worthy. As a result, Kyle's friends believed that he had intentionally steered them towards a destructive path.
Twilight Beckons
In the aftermath of the fatebomb plan, Terra and Emerie voluntarily turned themselves over to the authorities for their actions, and Kyle disappeared for several days. When he resurfaced, he was violently aggressive, even attacking Emerie when she tried to talk to him. It was only later noticed that the dark energy of Twilight, missing for some time, has once again appeared in visible form over his entire body.
Using meditative techniques, Kyle was able to temporarily suppress Twilight's influence over him, but the effect was strictly temporary. He was increasingly in danger of losing control and becoming violent again. Although he was unable to reassert dominance over Twilight, he later entreated Terra to try and separate it from his soul. A complicated untwisting spell managed to remove some of Twilight's influence over Kyle, but separating them was beyond her immediate power.
Desperate to be rid of the corrupting influence, Kyle told Terra to ask her order, the Order of the Iron Light, to work the complicated magic. They were successful, but not gentle; Kyle's soul was left in tatters, and he didn't regain consciousness for a full day. He claims to be suffering no ill effects other than a persistent cough, but the truth is that he is in constant pain, both physical and mental. He's been assured that, like any other injury, it will heal in time.
The Twilight energy that was removed from his body was sent to an unknown location in time and space. Terra assumes that her order sent it just a few seconds before the heat death of the universe, but the order itself has not made it's actions known to either of them.
Retirement
With things in a semblance of order for the first time since he arrived in Paragon, Kyle decided it was a good time to take it easy, enjoy life for once and generally just try to be a normal guy. After a few months of taking it easy, he was dismayed to find that he actually liked it. In addition to making him less crazy, the routine of a normal life let him spend more time with his family.
It was a hard decision, but he eventually decided that it would be best if he left the hero life, hanging up his sword, at least for now. He announced his retirement at the end of January and left the crime-fighting business behind.
Trivia
- Kyle wears a blue and black scarf in costume. This scarf was given to him by a young girl as a gift for saving her mother. Terra frequently uses this to remind him that he's a hero to someone, particularly when he feels he doesn't measure up to more traditional heroes. He promised the young girl he would always wear it when working. When he disappeared, he left the scarf in Emerie's care. He did not reclaim it when he returned, trusting her to carry out the young girl's wish, just as well, if not better, than he could.
- Despite being engaged to a mage and constantly being on the receiving end of beneficial magic, not to mention the fact that he knowingly wields two magic swords, Kyle has an intense dislike of magic. He simply doesn't trust any power that can, as he says, "make physics its bitch." This may contribute to his inability to use magic in any form.
- Kyle has a puppy that he received for Christmas in 2007 from Ibuki Takahura, a cross-breed of a Pomeranian and Cooshee, an extremely intelligent breed that usually has the ability to talk. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, the puppy cannot talk. Kyle named him Snugglesworth because he thought it would be hilarious.
- Kyle firmly believes that he is and always will be a "street level hero". As such, he does his best not to get involved in major events, such as the various Arachnos world domination plots or the Rikti invasion. Although he does occasionally get involved with major villains, he does so only grudgingly.
- Kyle hates time travel. Really hates it. He also despises dimensional physics. He firmly believes in the here and now, specifically the here and the now, and only goes for extra-dimensional jaunts when requested or required, which, as far as he is concerned, is far too often for his tastes. This is also why he doesn't use the dimensional properties of Twilight if he can help it.
- He seems to know things that he really shouldn't. For example, he calls Seiken (Luficia's sort-of-perverted sword) "old man", and has for a long time, even though he only recently learned that Seiken is actually Lufi's grandfather. He also seems to have a sixth sense for detecting Enerix, and he can even understand Feliney Kitten's meows without a translator. People rarely question these actions, either, as if it's expected of him to know what he shouldn't. He himself doesn't speak of these things, because, well, he hasn't been asked. It's really just a matter of being observant and looking for things that people normally ignore.
- Kyle's primary motivation for his actions are saving people, even from themselves. He does not particularly care if someone wants to be saved or not, and will constantly work to help those he perceives as being in need.
OOC Notes
- Even though Kyle doesn't know why he calls himself Mobius Knight, I sure do! Mobius is a direct throwback to Ace Combat 4 and the player character in that game, called Mobius One (which was taken). It's probably one of the cooler callsigns in the series. So I tried various permutations of Mobius (Blank), and Knight stuck. The sword came before the name, but the costume was refined after the fact.
- In terms of character knowledge, the "mobius" refers to a möbius strip, which is a normal ring with a half twist such that if you trace a line on the outside, it will also trace on the inside before returning to the outside. After the character was created and started to really come into his own, I decided that the name would be significant because he would go from hero to perceived villain back to hero. That didn't work out, but the idea has remained popular. As a result, Mobius Knight has a "murky" ethical philosophy at times, signifying that it really wouldn't take too much for him to go bad. At this point, he's pretty firmly cemented in the "hero" mentality, though.
