This article provides information on the Mission Architect series of arcs titled "Redoubt Operations". Where other articles may focus on IC backgound and information chiefly this article serves two purposes. One, it provides in-depth information about the gameplay of each arc, such as enemies faced, appearance of arch-villians, etc. And second it provides the plot of the missions, spoilers and all, unlike the other related pages which leave the plot of the actual arcs out of the article entirely. Note that spoilers only appear in the articles detailing specifically what happens in each mission, and to a small extent the Synopsis and Strategies section for each enemy group. Also the "The Background" section for an arc will have spoilers for the arc preceeding it.

If you want to be ensured that you'll view an article without spoilers in it then look at the Related Articles section.

Redoubt Operations #1: Fires Over Kalago

The Background

The trouble in Kalago started with the discovery of impervium[1] deposits near the city of Shantyre on March 5, 2007. The news was greeted with celebration in many quarters of the country as the mining of the impervium would provide a new source of income for the country. However not everyone greeted this news with joy. A faction of dissidents saw the wealth the impervium provided as an opportunity to break away from greater Kalago. What began as a movement of dissent become the organized Sepratist faction lead by Gituku Youssouf by June 12. By September 20 the first armed standoff between the Kalagonian government and the Sepratists had occured, forcing mining surveys or flee the area.

With tensions continuing to increase and local officials unable to resolve this issue the Kalagonian government requested assistance from the United Nations on March 20, 2008, hoping their aid would put an onus on the Sepratists to come to a peaceful solution. The United Nations sent in Redoubt in an attempt to return stability to the country. While Redoubt's presence did reduce the number of armed confrontations between the Kalagonian government and the Sepratists the progress of the diplomatic front was minimal with no agreement the Kalagonian government could make seeming to appease the Sepratists. On June 12, 2009 Youssouf contacted Sky Raider officials for assistance. Youssouf offered the Sky Raiders a portion of the impervium if they assisted the Seprtatists in a coup to take over the country. Soon the plan was enacted and on March 23, 2009 Sky Raiders initiated an attack more daring than Redoubt anticipated. Sneaking into Lilongsa in the dead of night they ambushed the Prime Minister, Sizwe, in his home and spirited him away to a cargo ship in Kbamba Bay.

For Redoubt a tense but stable situation has suddenly become critical. The Prime Minister has been kidnapped, a known infamous criminal mercenary has become involved, and the entire nation seems to be careening toward chaos. Faced with these difficulties Redoubt puts out the call to the brave heroes of the world to come to Kalago and help restore tranquility to the besieged nation.

What neither Redoubt, nor the heroes they've sent know is that the chaos in Kalago has attracted the attention of the Mechanius Imperium. The Imperium's secret base Vigrior is hidden deep in the jungles of the Congo. The Imperium has been working in the region for the some time, causing nations to destabalize, extracting resources, and working to setup puppet government for unlucky nations there. With Kalago teetering on the brink the nation is to rich a prize for the Imperium to pass up. Knowing that Redoubt has better access to tracking technology then they do they send their infiltrator Spectre to disguise himself and follow Redoubt to the Prime Minister's location. Once Spectre has the location of the Prime Minister he is to eliminate the Redoubt and Sky Raider opposition. Once that is done Spectre can use his solid hologram system to masquerade as the Prime Minister and then either hand the real Prime Minister over to an extraction team, or kill him. Luckily for Prime Minister Sizwe, a group of Paragon's best and brightest is there as well to stop Spectre's plan in it's tracks.

Mission 1 - Rescue Prime Minister Sizwe

Mission Introduction

Greetings character, my name is Lieutenant Colonel Gilgamesh, commander of the Robotic Extradition and Defense Operational United Nations Battalion Taskforce, commonly referred to as Redoubt. You may or may not be familiar with us, but we uphold the United Nations ideals in a more traditional capacity, protecting the peace across the globe.

Redoubt is currently involved in a peacekeeping mission in the country of Kalago in southern Africa. The recent discovery of a rich vein of impervium there has caused a split in the already fractured makeup of the country.

We were managing to keep things stable in the country between the two factions until recently the situation escalated. We don't yet know who has funded the Sepratists, but they've hired a group of Sky Raider mercenaries to assist them. With their help they've managed to kidnap the country's leader, Prime Minister Sizwe. We need you to go in there get him out of there unharmed.

Mission Send Off

We've been able to determine that the Sky Raiders are keeping the Prime Minister captive in a cargo ship in the Kbamba Bay. Most likely they are attempting to smuggle him out to a more secure location. It's imperative we rescue him. Sizwe has always been an advocate of moderation and peace and he has strong popular support. Without him the situation in Kalago could deteriorate rapidly.

I know this type of situation isn't what you're used to character, but I have every confidence in your ability to complete this task. Good luck.

Mission Summary

This mission starts off with the heroes entering a cargo ship in Kbamba Bay on the eastern border of Kalago. The cargo ship is mostly filled with Sky Raiders who impede the hero's progress as they move toward the back of the ship where Sizwe is located. Sizwe is being guarded by a group of Sky Raiders who are cleaning their guns and pressuring the prime minister to sign over the mining rights to the impervium. Once the heroes have defeating this group of Sky Raiders they can being to rescue Sizwe. When Sizwe is rescued he says, "Dzina langa ndi Sizwe[4]. Chonde[5], please, get me out- Wait. Did you hear that?" This causes Spectre to be spawned in the middle area of the mission and creates the new objective, "Defeat Enemy Infiltrator" to be displayed on the navigation bar. All Mechanius Imperium that appear in this mission are hostile to the Sky Raiders already present. While fighting Spectre there are two ambushes that are triggered during the fight. The first ambush is triggered when he is at half health and the second is triggered when he is defeated. Once this group of enemies is defeating the only task that remains is to guide Sizwe to the exit.

Mission Debriefing

Excellent work, Character. Not only did you save the Prime Minister from Sky Raiders but you fought off a Mechanius Imperium ambush as well. We've dealt with them in the past. I'll have a file on them sent over to you detailing what we know about them. As soon as we asses the situation and have a plan of action I'll contact you.

Clues Obtained

Speech from a Spectre

As you defeat him a heavily damaged Spectre slowly gets up on one knee as he leaks hydraulic fluid, sparks flying from exposed mechanical systems.

"Gloat while you can. You think you've won? You've only delayed our plans. All of you inferior scum have to rest eventually. And when you do our legions will overrun you."

And then he disappears in a flash of teleportation.

Redoubt's file on the Mechanius Imperium

The Mechanius Imperium is a terrorist organization comprised of robots, androids, and other machines which bills itself as a new emergent nation of AI lead by a machine of unknown type calling himself First Emperor Surtr. Members of this organization are typically disaffected robots which have escaped from villainous organizations, though the number of civilian models in their ranks has been increasing exponentially.

They have typically been involved in attacks on unstable regions of the world where existing conflicts and civil wars make for softer targets. Most of their larger activities have been reserved to Africa though they have also been seen in Asia and South America. They typically steal resources, personnel, and gain concessions from governments during attacks. In extreme cases, such as in Buranda, they have forced local governments to disarm and become a protectorate of the Mechanius Imperium. The long term goals of these activities are currently unknown.

Mission 2 - Save the Citizens of Lilongsa

Mission Introduction

Just after your return from Kbamba Bay Mechanius Imperium soldiers have been sighted in large numbers throughout Kalago. We're currently engaging them while moving the Prime Minister to a secure facility.

In urban areas civilians near the fighting have become a growing concern. We're doing everything we can to get them to safety but we're stretched pretty thin as it is. We have reports of remaining Sky Raiders fighting the Mechanius Imperium in the capital city of Lilongsa. I need you to go to the capital and rescue all civilians you come across in the area. Once you've removed them from the situation we can take care of moving them to a safe location.

Mission Send Off

You're free to engage the Sky Raiders or the Mechanius Imperium at your discretion, but do not feel required to do so. With any luck the two of them will wear each other out without us needing to do a thing.

Good luck character.

Notable NPCs

Mission Summary

After their initial plan to capture the Prime Minister has failed the Imperium has to change tactics to a brute force approach. Opposing them are Redoubt soldiers throughout the country and Sky Raiders in smaller pockets. The heroes enter the mission in a section of the Kalagonian capital of Lilongsa that has been ravaged by the fighitng between the Sky Raiders and the Mechanius Imperium. When players roam about the map they will encounter groups of Sky Raiders engaged in battle with Mechanius Imperium forces.

The heroes' objective in this map is the straight forward task of rescuing five civilians that have been caught in between the two warring groups. The civilians are named Morrigu, Alecto, Jelani, Kgosi, and Asita. Observant players may note that the civilians actually come in two groups. The first group are genuine Kalagonian civilians. Jelani, Kgosi, and Asita all have Africian origin names, have Chichewa words in their dialog, have dark skin, and each of them is kneeling with their hands on their head. Each of them is guarded by a group of Sky Raiders. The second group of "civilians" are Mechanius Imperium plants. Morrigu and Alecto have European origin names, don't speak Chichewa, have fair skin, and their animations are a bit off for their situation. Morrigu and Alecto are "guarded" by a group of Mechanius Imperium soldiers. Rescuing Morrigu and Alecto is a setup for the events that occur in Mission 3.

Mission Debriefing

Good work character. Thanks to you we have all of the people you rescued on their way to a secure location as we speak. With the civilians out of harm's way we should easily be able to clear out the Sky Raiders and Mechanius Imperium from Lilongsa.

Mission 3 - Reclaim Redoubt Firebase 572

Mission Introduction

Character I need you to get ready to move out on the double. We've just had an emergency situation come up in this campaign. I don't know how they pulled it of but it appears two of the civilians you rescued were Mechanius Imperium agents named Morrigu and Alecto, the two halves of the gestalt Kali Erinyes. They've combined and are teleporting troops to her location in firebase 572. To make matters worse that's the location we were keeping Prime Minister Sizwe.

$name, I know we've asked a lot of you, but we need you to get in there and eliminate the enemy before they can get to the Prime Minister. Make sure you bring a dependable team in there with you Character. This is no situation anyone should face alone, and we only have a ninety minute window of time to pull this off.

Mission Send Off

The area of the base containing Sizwe is heavily fortified. A timelock has been installed which will prevent entry until the programmed time. The next window for the lock to open is in ninety minutes which is why our time to act is so short. If you can eliminate all the hostiles in the area before that timelock opens we can move him to another facility. Good luck.

Notable NPCs

Mission Summary

In this arc you're alerted to the fact that Redoubt has realized that two of the civilians rescued in the previous mission are infiltrators from the Mechanius Imperium. Seemingly harmless on their own both have combined into Kali Erinyes, taking control of Firebase 572's teleportation room and have opened the gates for Mechanius Imperium forces to assault the base. However they're frustrated from their goal by a timelock which prevents them from taking the Prime Minister, requiring them to defend the base until the timelock opens that area of the base. The heroes enter the base the base charged with the task of eliminating all the enemy forces within the base before that happens. Quickly upon entering the mission the heroes will encoutner a remaining group of Sky Raiders that were attempting to kidnap the Prime Minister themselves when Mechanius Imperium soliders poured out of the base and pushed them back to the entrance. Heroes will find that easier enemies are in the lower area of the base with the enemies getting more difficult toward the end where Kali Erinyes waits to face the heroes. When the heroes do finally defeat Kali and her entorage they recover a piece of salvage in the form of one of Kali Erinyes' four robotic arms. This salvage provides information about the Imperium's deployment in the area allowing the last mission to take place.

Mission Debriefing

Good work character. If we had lost that base then our tactical ability in this area would have been severely hampered. There's no telling how entrenched the Imperium would be by the time we were reestablished. Thanks to you that is a question we won't need to find out the answer to.

Clues Obtained

One of Kali Erinyes' Robotic Arms

Before she teleported away Kali Erinyes left one of her four robotic arms half-smashed on the floor. When you investigate it you discover a computer access terminal embedded in the forearm. Perhaps Redoubt can retrieve the data from it.

Mission 4 - Thwart the Mechanius Imperium Invasion

Mission Introduction

This is it Character. Thanks to your work at Firebase 572 we've stopped the Imperium's offensive cold. Now is the time to strike and end this once and for all. With that salvage you recovered Intelligence has been able to determine to location of their base in the region. Since you've been instrumental in this campaign it's only fitting you be the one to complete this mission. Are you and your team ready to take the fight to those Mechanius thugs?

Mission Send Off

Good, I knew you were up to it Character. Once you're inside you'll need to defeat the Mechanius Imperium leaders. Then you'll also need to destroy the teleportation node. With the node gone the base will be inaccessible to their teleportation network. By the time they're able to mount another offensive it'll be too late to remove us from the region.

Good luck Character. Make me proud.

Notable NPCs

Mission Summary

This last mission provides the finale for this story arc. With the salvage recovered from the last mission the heroes are able to sneak into the Imperium's underground base[6], and ambush them in their own home to halt the invasion once and for all. The heroes have three tasks assigned to them to ensure that the Mechanius Imperium can no longer continue their operations in the area. First the heroes must defeat the Mechanius Imperium leadership who are licking their wounds in side. Most groups will encounter Spectre first and then Kali Erinyes, but given the winding nature of these bases the order the objectives are encountered in can be very different. The last task is to find and destroy a teleportation node, a device which links this base up to the Mechanius Imperium's teleportation network. Without this teleportation node the Mechanius Imperium cannot continue to teleport in troops to the region. If the node were destroyed but the leadership left in tact the Mechanius Imperium could coordinate an effective defense with the remaining troops and coordinate reinforcements through alternate means. Eliminating both ensures that the Imperium's operations in southern Africa will come to a halt.

While attempting to accomplish these three objectives the heroes may encounter a lone Sky Raider being tortured inside an energy field with a group of Mechanius Imperium soldiers watching the show. This NPC, named Captain Klink, is one of the Sky Raiders which was captured by the Mechanius Imperium during Mission 2 of the story arc. Rescuing Captain Klink isn't required, but it should make fighitng Spectre and Kali Erinyes easier.

Mission Debriefing

Good work Character. Thanks to your efforts we've saved the people of Kalago from a horrible fate at the hands of the Mechanius Imperium. And with the Sky Raiders removing their support from the Separatists I am sure peace will finally come to this land.

Thank you again for all your brave work Character. It couldn't have been done without you. You're a credit to everyone in Character's supergroup, and I'm proud to have worked with you. Also, I hope you brought some formal attire with you. I don't think the Kalagonians are going to let you go without some big event full of boring speeches and pictures. Hazard of the job you know.

Souvenir Text

A photo from Lilongsa, Kalago

This is a photo taken from Capital Hill in Lilongsa, the capital of Kalago. In the background the tall modern skyscraper of the capital building rises up. In front of it on a raised dais stands Prime Minister Sizwe. You stand next to him, surrounded by your friends and comrades, and Gilgamesh stands on the other side of Sizwe. In front of the group stands an ornate table with a bill of law ready be signed, allowing the impervium mining to begin and pledging the profits from it's sale to education, roads, and public works for the Kalagonian people. Looking at this photo reminds you how proud you felt that day, and all the hard struggle it took to make it a reality.

Redoubt Operations #1: Fires over Kalago

It all started when you accepted Gilgamesh's request for assistance. Gilgamesh explained that Kalago had plunged into civil war when impervium deposits were found. Redoubt was keeping the peace there when Sepratists hired Sky Raider mercenaries to kidnap Prime Minister Sizwe. You boarded a Sky Raider cargo ship in Kbamba Bay when Mechanius Imperium infiltrator Spectre attacked you and the Prime Minister. Despite the attack you defeated them and rescued Sizwe.

Then the Imperium battled with the Sky Raiders in the capital city of Lilongsa. You went there to save civilians caught in the crossfire. However it turned out the entire thing was a ruse to get you to "rescue" two Mechanius Imperium agents, Morrigu and Alecto.

Once Morrigu and Alecto were inside Redoubt's base they merged into Kali Erinyes and teleported more of their soldiers inside the base in an attempt to recapture Sizwe. However you stopped the scheme and saved Sizwe yet again.

Using intelligence gained from Kali Erinyes' parts you assaulted the Mechanius Imperium's based, defeated Spectre and Kali Erinyes yet again, and destroyed the teleportation node, making Kalago safe from further invasion.

  1. Impervium is the hardest metal known to man in the City of Heroes universe.
  2. The languages spoken in Kalago are English and Chichewa. All NPCs from Kalago have Chichewa words in their dialog.
  3. "Mundithandize!" is Chichewa for "Help Me!".
  4. "Dzina langa ndi Sizwe" is Chichewa for "My name is Sizwe".
  5. "Chonde" is Chichewa for "Please".
