Background
Ben Eckstein grew up in Paragon City. From an early age he showed an incredible aptitude for taking apart appliances and other household appliances and reassembling them, often improving them in one way or another in the process. Excelling in math and science while in school, Ben graduated from high school early, where he attended Paragon City University, majoring in mechanical and electronic engineering. In five years time, Ben earned bachelor degrees double-majoring as well as a masters degree. His instructors noted, however, that while Ben is practically a genius in modifying, adapting, and improving the designs of others, he has little to no ability to come up with his own designs. For example, he has modified car engines to run on one third of the fuel they used previously, but when asked to create plans for a brand new engine, he is unable to. This has led some to believe that Ben possesses some sort of learning disability, but the effects have not been too detrimental.
Upon completion of his masters degree, Ben's unique abilities attracted the attention of a rather reclusive group, The Scarlet Falcons. During World War II, the Falcons were an elite group of pilots using experimental planes and weapons in the fight against the Axis powers, as well as confiscating any number of weapons. Despite the age of these devices, many of them are still quite dangerous and were housed in the Falcons' old headquarters. By the time Ben was contacted by the group, only one of the former members was still alive. He needed someone who could maintain the island's stores of technology as well as its defense systems. Ben spent a full year in this capacity, during which he grew quite attached to the last of the Scarlet Falcons.
Unfortunately, one of the Falcons' old enemies, the Fifth Column, reemerged. Launching an all out attack on the Falcon's Nest, the Column managed to get past the island's defenses, despite taking heavy damage themselves. Ben, fighting along side the Scarlet Falcon tried using whatever devices he could to combat the raiders, but they were soon overwhelmed. Witnessing his friend get killed and the theft of most of the island's treasures,Ben grabbed what he could and escaped the island, vowing to reclaim whatever he could. Returning to Paragon City, Ben began a process of modifying the devices he had brought back with him. He then created a costume for himself using the name, logo, and colors of the Falcons. Calling himself the Scarlet Falcon, Ben has begun a quest to reclaim the items stolen under his watch and to further the legacy of the Scarlet Falcons. To this end, he has joined the Union Supreme.
Abilities and Equipment
Ben makes extensive use of his devices when fighting criminals and villains. To date, he has been known to use the following pieces of equipment: web grenades, caltrops (with retracting spikes tuned to the comm signal of his allies), acid mortar, trip mines, gas traps, force field generators, antigravity propulsion device, rocket boots with stabilizing wings, a stealth device, a triage beacon, and his Falcon Cry, which has three settings: focused, wide range, and disorienting.
In addition, Ben has received some physical training from his teammate, The Battling Bulldog. Noting early in his crime fighting career that his endurance was poor and that he knew very little about hand to hand combat, he began a rather intense training regimen. With that said, Ben is by no means a world class marital artist or boxer; however, he now has quite a bit more stamina and can throw a half way decent punch.
A Note on Costumes
while Ben, like most heroes, wears a standard costume when fighting crime, he also employs a number of specific function outfits. To date, he has been seen in his specialized flight suit (used for flying longer distances), a stealth suit, and has discussed both a deep water diving suit and a hazmat suit. these last two, however, are still in the prototype stages. Each suit is distinctive for its own color scheme, while still retaining the basic elements of his primary costume.
Affiliations
Ben is a former employee of the now defunct group, The Scarlet Falcons. Currently, Ben is a member of The Union Supreme. To date, he has worked most closely with Meridian Star, Shining Centurion, Egalitarian, Solairis, and Sea Maiden, the last of which he has asked for help in testing his diving suit when it is ready.
Ben has mentioned parents as well as a Polish grandmother, who apparently fled Poland to escape the Nazis, suggesting that Ben is Jewish.
