Preface
This character was an extremely loose CoX adaptation of a hero (if you could call him that) concept I made up outside of the game. The character concept that Solink was based on revolved around a man who was experimented on, giving him extraordinary destructive power, but also making him terminally ill. Solink was also experimented on by an affiliation of scientists known only as “they” – and as a result he is now a link to the star sol. The consequences of this involuntary operation are immensely taxing on his health and sanity, but more of that will be explained below. I designed this character to have a very interactive storyline in which many people can participate and even alter with their own RP. “They” is a villain group that I created in AE, and Solink’s arch nemesis.
Biography
An excerpt from one of Solink's "investigative recordings", which he uses to keep track of his memories of "them" in order to aid in his search for freedom, and possibly some vengence...
"The memory of the night it all started is blurred - it is the first thing I remember about my life. Most people have the luxury of not remembering the day they were born, but as for me, I was born out of that dark alley where 'They' first found me. Two men seemingly sprung from the very shadows to restrain me, and as they were doing so they injected me with a strong sedative. As I hung there, I remember seeing a tall man in white with red shades approach, that is my last memory of that alley.
The next thing I knew, I lying on a medical bed surrounded by curtains in a darkened room. I could hear silent footsteps all around but I was unable to speak. I soon found that I couldn't even move a finger, no matter how hard I tried. As I began to panic, someone stepped through the curtain. All I could see was his silhouette against the grey wall. He flipped a switch on some sort of device he held in his hand, and after a shock of pain, I could move my arms and legs. I sat up, looked down at my hands, and noticed that my entire right arm was covered with metal, as well as my left forearm. My eyes felt... different... I couldn't place it - so gingerly I tapped what seemed to be glass lenses where my eyes should be. The dark silhouette simply stood there, waiting for me to look up at him.
Immediately as I met what I thought was his gaze, he began, 'you are more lucky than you realize, for you are about to be provided a link to a power that mortals have for millennia lived under until now. First, you must learn how to use your modifications. You will start now, Project Solink.'
I lost track of time. Weeks went by, maybe even months, of physical therapy and training. During this time I still had no idea what was going to happen to me, and I wasn't particularly optimistic about it either. I never got to leave that building, and I never saw anyone besides the staff. When it was time for me to sleep, they would flip the switch and I would lie in paralysis for the next few hours.
Finally, and dreadfully, the day came. I came to a massive complex, machinery lined the walls, and computer consoles encircled a metal slab where I was to be strapped in. As I lay there, the strangest type of machine loomed above me. It is hard to describe, but it reminded me of a drill. My right arm was placed in a brace, with my open palm facing the point of the 'drill'. It began to spin slowly, and then quickly speeding up, the very air around it began to whirl. I felt immense pressure on my right arm, and I could feel blood trickling out of where metal and flesh met. At last, a blinding ray of light shot from the ‘drill’, exactly at the center of my right-hand palm. I admit I was terrified, these people had to be insane - I kept thinking (and somewhat wishing) that the machine was going to kill me. A sharp popping noise resonated through the chamber, and my arm felt no more pressure for a few brief moments. Suddenly, a blast of searing energy came from my palm, damaging the machine above me. It was still operational, however, and the damage only caused it to malfunction, shooting what I describe as a "buckshot" of tiny spheres of light through my chest. At this point, I was in so much shock that I didn't feel the pain anymore.
I woke up again sometime later to find two new ‘additions’ to my body. A circular implant was embedded into my chest, a thick bandage was wrapped around my right arm socket, and a ventilator covered my mouth and nose. I took off the ventilator, and immediately felt as though I was breathing in glass, I began to cough so much that droplets of blood sprayed forth. Finally, I managed to work the ventilator back on, and passed out.
The next thing I saw was an open door, with the silhouette passing back and forth in front of it – the light I had not seen in so long was almost too bright. I was in a wheel chair, paralyzed again as he spoke to me. He said, ‘You are finally ready for testing – for this part you will have a choice. You may work for us directly, or you may register as a hero and still be working for us. We have people within the FBSA that will be watching you, should you decide to register, so don’t do anything that would displease me. You may tell everyone what I have told you – trust me; it will not matter in the slightest.’
I haven’t told anyone this until now, because I don’t want it to be more complicated than it is… “
Personality
Solink’s personality can be summed up by those who have met him as suspicious, reserved, intense, and morose. Being in his presence is like falling into a den of wolves; he often makes people uncomfortable to be around him with his aura of stoic intensity. When spoken to he is often cryptic in his responses, but as the conversation progresses he reveals his sarcastic, dark sense of humor. Solink talks like someone who has nothing to lose that couldn’t care less about heroism – but this demeanor is nearly transparent to most people. It is obvious that he does care, perhaps too much.
There is something beneath the supposed resilience and unnerving intensity of this person, but few, if any, people have discovered it. The most empathic people can sense vulnerability embedded deep within, covered by a thick layer of turbulent emotions churning just below the skin. Solink channels his anger and frustration into rock solid determination. There is no stopping him once he has his sights set.
Psychological Notes
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – Because of frequent abductions “they” carry out on him in order to upgrade his cybernetic implants, Solink has developed a note-worthy case of PTSD. Episodes are often triggered when he in cornered in battle, trying to escape, or simply alone in an empty place. When an episode is triggered, Solink will enter a frenzy, which can be dangerous to all those around him. Solink is aware that he has a problem, which is why he makes sure to make a planned tactical strike before every battle in order to avoid episodes.
Paranoid Personality Defect – Another side effect of the abductions; Solink tends to become paranoid when asked too many questions by someone he does not completely trust. Also he tends to be overly wary of his surroundings, always looking over his shoulder uneasily.
Solink’s Cybernetics
These are all of the implants that Solink is aware that he has.
Ocular Implant
This implant gives Solink the ability to see great distances and magnify images. He can switch to various modes such as infrared and x-ray as well. Although they do not target for him, the enhanced vision does aid him in battle. Like all of his implants, Solink’s ocular implant is integrated deeply into his nervous system to the point where if he is concentrating on something his subconscious mind will actually tell the implant to magnify his vision. The ocular implant is grafted onto Solink’s skull, and is as much a part of him as his eyes once were.
Cybernerve Network
This is a network of cybernetic nerves that operate as an alternate nervous system for the implants. The cybernerves are then integrated into Solink’s organic nerves, giving him good control of his new modifications. They are clearly visible just under Solink’s skin, and do register pain when one of his implants is damaged.
Tactile Energy Device – The Left Forearm
Perhaps the most advanced piece of technology on Solink’s person, the implant on his left forearm is designed to make manipulating energy from the sun more intuitive. This implant generates a field of energy capable of containing the plasma and radiation projected from Solink’s right palm. He is able to subconsciously manipulate this energy into “shells” in which to contain solar plasma and radiation, then assail his enemies with it. The purpose of this is to keep his power under control; without it, he could wipe out an entire city block without meaning to. This energy, which has a green color to it, can also be useful for repelling enemies and can be used for melee attacks when he “fills” sphere shaped energy fields around his fists with solar plasma. Although his left forearm implant is responsible for manipulating the energy, both of Solink’s arms can generate it.
Another ability Solink has because of this implant is to “feel” energy. He can place his left hand into any type of energy or radiation and indentify what it is (if he knows what that type of energy feels like). He has described negative energy to feel as though his hand is inside of a freezing vortex. Other energies, such as the gold light from the Ouroboros portal, are indescribable.
Solar Wormhole Containment – The Right Arm
This implant, which composes Solink’s entire right arm, is what houses the wormhole that resides in the palm of his right hand. The wormhole which leads to the sun is the source of all his power, without it he wouldn’t be able to see, walk, move his right arm or left forearm, much less dispense plasma and radiation from the sun upon his enemies. On his right palm there is a circular “door” that is constructed out of some unknown material which seems to successfully stop plasma or radiation leaks from the sun. Solink is able to open this door at will, causing searing energies to pour from his hand – he has described the feeling as akin to “moving a finger”.
Mutable Wormhole Stabilizer
The implant on Solink’s chest was a hasty addition after the machine malfunctioned and produced another more unstable wormhole on Solink’s chest. This is the mutable wormhole, because Solink is able to program its coordinates and construct temporary portals in which one person at a time may travel through – the portal funnels out from his chest implant, which glows brightly during the entire process. People who have traveled through the mutable wormhole often comment on how uncomfortable of an experience it is. Solink is now able to transport himself by using this implant to temporarily extend the wormhole out in front of him, allowing him to pass through it.
Leg Prosthesis
A simple modification, these implants are clearly visible on the lower half of Solink’s legs. They let him run fairly fast and jump high, although not nearly as fast or high as some other supers. The most important function of these prosthesis however is to give extra support to Solink's body because of the meavy metal implants on his arms and shoulders.
