Unofficial Handbook of the Virtue Universe:Sysops

Syops (systems operators) are VirtueVerse editors who have access to more advanced features and controls to help with maintenance. Typically sysop status is granted to anyone who is an active, regular VirtueVerse user over a period of several months, and has demonstrated their familiarity with the VirtueVerse Policies and Guidelines. Users are encouraged to make an official Request for Sysop Rights to obtain these priviledges which include the ability to protect and delete pages, block edits, and undo these actions as well.

Because sysops are expected to be experienced members of the VirtueVerse community, users often go to them seeking help, or mediation in a dispute. Sysops are urged in all situations to remain neutral and provide help and guidance as needed.

Sysop Status

There are no official requirements to becoming a VirtueVerse sysop. Anybody is welcome to apply regardless of their experience with VirtueVerse or wiki editing in general. But please be aware that there are standards by which a sysop should adhere.

Sysops, like all users are not perfect beings. However in general they are expected to act as role models within the community. They are expected to be civil, and fair, and to exercise good judgement and provide explanations for their actions as necessary.

Sysop rights are particularly helpful for working and assisting with certain areas of the VirtueVerse project.

Sysop Tools

Mediawiki has several restricted features such as page deletion, page protection, block and unblocking and access to modify protected pages along with the mediawiki interface. You can find more information in the Sysops How to Guide.

Page Deletion

Deletion of VirtueVerse articles removes the current version and all previous versions from public view. Deletion can be performed only by sysops and sysops can also view deleted pages and reverse ("undelete") any deletion. All such actions are logged.

Reasons for deletion include, but are not limited to, the following:

Page Protection

Sysops can protect a page to restrict editing or moving that page, they can also remove such protection. Protection on individual pages can be indefinite or expire after a specific period of time.

Sysops may unprotect a page if the reason for its protection no longer applies or a reasonable period has elapsed.

Blocking & Unblocking

Blocking is the method by which sysops may technically prevent users from editing VirtueVerse. All blocks ultimately exist to protect the project from harm, and reduce likely future problems. When lesser measures are inadequate, or problematic conduct persists, appropriate use of a block can help achieve this in four important ways:

  1. Preventing imminent or continuing damage and disruption to VirtueVerse.
  2. Deterring the continuation of disruptive behavior by making it more difficult to edit.
  3. Encouraging a rapid understanding that the present behavior cannot continue and will not be tolerated.
  4. Encouraging a more productive, congenial editing style within community norms.
Important note – Blocks are intended to reduce the likelihood of future problems, by either removing, or encouraging change in, a source of disruption. They are not intended for use in retaliation, as punishment, or where there is no current conduct issue which is of concern.

For the purposes of protection and encouragement, blocks may escalate in duration to protect VirtueVerse while allowing for the cessation of disruptive editing and the return to respected editing.
