Character History

Early Childhood

Living for Old Glory!

Heather grew up in a very patriotic, proud American family. In fact, she often teases that she was born with "Old Glory" in her hands. Part of this was due to her grandfather, Russell, who served the United States as a bombardier aboard a B-17 Flying Fortress during World War II. Stationed in England, he and his crew manned the "Columbus Queen" in the skies over Europe. After the war ended, Russell started a family-run air show which travelled around the Ohio River Valley.

As a child, Heather spent a lot of time listening to her grandpa and his buddies trade war stories. For obvious reasons, he called her his "Little Bombardier"; she had a closer relationship with her grandfather than she did with the rest of her family, even her parents. Heather grew up with flying in her blood and trips up into the air with grandpa, meant the opportunity to take the controls. Before she was 11 years-old, she already knew how to fly most of the smaller aircraft in her grandpa's show and hanging out in the garage with the mechanics gave her quite the knack at aircraft repair.

Mutant Manifestation

One summer, she was in the hangar working on the plane her grandpa gave her for her sixteenth birthday. Disaster seemingly struck when there was a malfunction in a new aircraft that was being tested before the annual "Fourth of July" show. As the plane came down for its landing, the pilot lost control and the craft was sent on a collision course with the hangar Heather occupied. The plane crashed through the walls of the flimsy structure and smashed into Heather's plane.

Heather had no time to react and was engulfed in a rush of flames and debris. After the blaze settled enough to make it possible, her grandfather was able to extinguish the flames around her with a frozen burst from a cannister of fire repellant. As he grabbed his grandchild, Russell almost dropped her. Her body was at first burning hot to the touch, hot enough to start to burn his hands. Then almost instantly she became ice cold, nearly giving Russell frostbite. Finally, her body returned to normal and he was amazed that she had no visible burns or marks from the incident.

Sheltered Youth

Young Heather at the hangar.

In the few short months after the plane crash, it became evident that Heather had some sort of "abnormality" in her body. This mutation allowed her to absorb the two extreme temperature blasts she was exposed to in the accident. Not only that, but now she had the ability to control, in a limited way, the properties of fire and ice. Through trial and error she began to learn to control these new "gifts". Of course, this developmental phase ranged from blowing up a motor home and freezing the dog to the floor to lighting a candle and making a snowperson in ninety degree weather.

Heather's parents became immediately concerned about their daughter's well-being. Rather than seek the proper channels to get help for her, they instead chose to shut her off from the rest of the world. She was always on a short leash and lavished each and every moment she had with her grandparents. In fact, her grandpa was the only one in her family that really embraced Heather's powers; encouraging her to reach her full potential. He told her stories about the valiant superheroes who saved his crew so many times in the skies above Germany during the war. In the ultimate act of rebellion, he took her to meet a real superhero friend of his who was retired and living in St. Louis. This, of course, is when she first learned about Paragon City.

Death and Birth

While under the strict protection of her parents, Heather was home-schooled and really had no opportunities to socialize with kids her age. She was able to graduate with her high school equivalency and began taking correspondence courses at the local community college. After proving to her parents that she could keep her powers secret and avoid placing anyone in danger, Heather enrolled in the University of Toledo.

Even with the door of opportunity to socialize wide open, Heather still remained quite shy during her college years. She rarely went to parties or gatherings on campus, dedicating her time to her studies and trips up in the air with her grandfather. Remembering the many stories her grandfather had told her about the war, Heather chose to major in English and American History. She graduated with a teaching degree, but still planned to make a career in the sky as a pilot in her grandpa's air show.

Unfortunately, right after graduation, her grandfather died of heart failure. Not only had she lost her grandpa, but she had lost her best friend and only true "believer" in life. Without her grandfather's passion as a driving force, her family chose to sell the entire operation. The once proud American family she belonged to became a flock of vultures circling her grandpa's inheritance and estate. In the end everyone seemed to get what they wanted, but in the process, Heather became detatched because she couldn't stand what they had become.

While looking through her grandfather's things, Heather came across his old bombardier's jacket. She quickly remembered her grandpa talking about fighting for freedom and liberty against oppression and tyranny. Her grandfather always believed that she had something special to offer the world and that someday she would know what to do with her "gifts". Well, everything clicked and she decided it was time to use her powers to uphold the ideals her grandpa had lived for. The stories of the superheroes that fought during the war suddenly became an inspiration. She donned her grandpa's leather jacket and dubbed herself Lady Bombardier.

Superhero City

Arrival in Paragon City.

Heather didn't stay long in Columbus. She recalled the "special" town on the east coast that the hero her grandpa took her to had mentioned...Paragon City. Using her savings from the small inheritance her grandfather had left her, she moved to a small apartment in Atlas Park. She registered at City Hall and began to lead the double life that so many heroes in the "super" city choose to live.

As Heather Blain, she decided to put her schooling to use as a subsitute teacher in Paragon's public school system. As Lady Bombardier, she began a young heroine's crusade into the unknown. Like most new heroes, she kept her early adventures in the vicinity of Atlas Park, rarely venturing into the tougher areas of the city. Although she seemingly had more mishaps than victories, the rookie crimefighter began to establish a small list of reliable contacts, both on the street and from within the P.P.D.

Heather then began to team with other young heroes. It was the team format that Heather seemed to find her niche. On her own, she would never have contemplated going down into Paragon's sewer network or riding the Yellow Line to King's Row. But in a team, a confidence in her abilities began to rise and, slowly but surely, the name Lady Bombardier was becoming known on the streets. Yet, temporary team-ups and on-the-fly allies provided no real relief to the feelings of loneliness. She started to realize that she needed a larger support structure in order to survive in the ups and downs of Paragon life.

The United Sentinels of America

Protecting Paragon's skies.

While making a visit to City Hall in Atlas Park, Heather met someone that would change her life. Dressed in red, white, and blue, Liberty Vanguard stood valiantly beneath the statue of the mighty Atlas. When the patriotic colors caught Heather's attention, she felt a need to go over and find more about the heroine. Too shy and nervous to do anything but just stare, Heather almost left, when Liberty Vanguard stopped her. They began to talk and eventually Van told Heather about the group she belonged to, the United Sentinels of America . Thus began a relationship that Heather has come to rely upon, as Liberty Vanguard very quickly became a trusted mentor and a very dear friend.

Well, the timid kid from Ohio filled out an application to become a member of the Sentinels. She was later contacted and interviewed, along with Victory One. Both of them were inducted into the group by the Platinum Sentinel, Sol Imperium. They both got the tour of the spacious base of operations of the Sentinels called H.O.M.E. And yes, it quickly become Heather's home away from home, as she started to spend more time with her new friends and family.

In her first few days as a Sentinel, Heather acted upon the advice of Liberty Vanguard and began working closely with a couple of her fellow new recruits. Victory One (Jack) and Pearl Sword (Mike) were much more experienced than the blaster from the Midwest, but Heather was able to feed off of their guidance and direction. Their powers complemented each other well and together they made quite the crimefighting trio. Gradually, Heather became very good friends with Jack and Mike. She saw Jack as the kind of man she hoped to someday stand next to and Mike as the big sister that always had her back.

A Tragic Encounter

As Lady Bombardier, Heather felt like she was flying through "Cloud Nine". She had found both friends and family as a member of the United Sentinels of America and she was beginning to realize her full potential in using her gifts. This good feeling would not last however. One evening, she came to the Sentinel headquarters and overheard a heated converstation about a certain villain. The villain's name was Arbiter Death and the acts mentioned that he and his group the Villains of Paragon City committed, left Heather with a bad taste in her mouth.

The next day, she met Jack in Atlas Park. As fate would have it, Arbiter Death was there with his followers. After Heather turned to Jack and pointed out the villain, Death ordered his troops to open fire. Open Arsenal sent a volley of gun fire towards the Sentinels and while Jack was able to avoid the burst, Heather was struck by several bullets in the chest. Before Jack could successfully counter-attack, Graviton Shield and Arachron Greg had Heather in their grasp.

The Villains of Paragon City took the captive Sentinel to their lair and began a session of torture and interrogation that would leave Heather both physically and emotionally scarred for a long time to come. When the villains attempted to force her into working for them in return for sparing Jack's life, Heather first began to realize that she had feelings for Jack beyond friendship. She didn't give in to their demands and ended up paying the price for her resistance in the process. Arbiter Death destroyed Heather's right arm with his torture devices and acid chemicals. In order to subdue her, one of the villains had crushed her legs with his gravity control powers and further damage was done with more acid. Yet, through force of will and great determination, Victory One and Pearl Sword were able to infiltrate the villain lair and get Heather to safety. Yet, the damage had been done, as Heather had been stripped of her confidence and dignity.

Long Road to Recovery

Victory One and Pearl Sword were able to get Heather back H.O.M.E., but they were unable to contact any Sentinels with medical experience. In a daring move, they quickly transported her to the lesser known Cygnus Medical Center in Galaxy City. Together with Sol Imperium, Jack and Mike were able to fend off another attempt by the Villains of Paragon City to recapture Heather. During the whole pursuit, Heather faded in and out of consciousness in the arms of her strong protector, Jack.

Immediately, the doctors got her in for surgery. They were able to remove the bullets from her chest and re-set and fuse any other fractures in her chest and legs. They were able to halt some of the chemicals that were in the substance that was poured on her legs. But tragically, in order to stop the acid that was poured on her arm from eating away any more of her body, the doctors had to amputate her right arm completely. She came out of the operating room in stable condition.

Jack was there when she went into the operating room and he was there when she came out, never leaving her side until he knew she was safe. In fact, he personally made sure she made it back to the medical bay at H.O.M.E. Together, they began to express their feelings for each other and the relationship that Heather dreamed possible was in its beginning stages.

Heather's road to complete recovery would be long and painful. She found herself dealing with many issues, the least being those of a physical nature. She laid awake in bed many long nights, with tears falling down her cheeks, knowing that sleep would only bring back sick dreams that played out like a "re-run" of the whole tragedy. Everywhere she turned she saw the faces of Arbiter Death and her assailants. Along with that was the guilt of placing her friends in danger and compromising the ones she had truly begun to love. She even, at one time, deeply considered putting away her uniform for good.

Yet, the intervention of many Sentinels prevented that. The time she spent with Victory One became more frequent, as walks and quiet get-a-ways with Jack became a reality. Pearl Sword became very instrumental in Heather's physical recovery, with training sessions in the gym and assistance in her first few cases back in the field. Liberty Vanguard was also every bit the great mentor and wise teacher, encouraging her in dealing with her pain and protecting her from anyone that sought to cause further harm.

Dark Days and Darker Nights

The Dark Bombardier!?!

Despite her friends' intervention to keep her with the Sentinels, Heather certainly reached a low point in her superhero life. Even though most would think that Heather was incapable of having a darker side, her attitude and approach towards things took a plunge downwards. It all seemed to start with Heather's decision to receive a bionic implant to replace her missing right arm. She desperately wanted an everyday reminder of the things she needed to improve on and the robotic-looking arm was, in Heather's eyes, just that.

On top of that, she went in to receive brief treatments on her legs at Mt. Harvey Medical Center in Founder's Falls. The bones had healed completely, but they were unable to define and extract all the acid that was poured on her legs. Over time, the substance had started to eat away at her legs. Golf ball sized divots, covered by thin pussy blisters, began to develop on her calves and shins. One even looked as if it went all the way from one side to the other. After a short time seeing specialists, Heather realized the process would be long and she might be placed on the "shelf" to heal. So, she stopped her visits to the doctors and did her best to hide her wounds from all she knew and loved...a mistake that would most certainly catch up with her.

So with her bionic arm and her deep dark secret in tow, she quite morbidly and selfishly needed an excuse to look for revenge. This of course was against the code that the Sentinels saught to uphold, so she speant less time working with her teammates and more time working alone and during the night hours. Believing her grandfather's bombardier jacket to be destroyed, Heather adopted a much darker-shaded uniform. She began to take cases that involved villains with similar characteristics and styles to that of her assailants. Her fighting style became much more aggressive because with each and every criminal she faced, all she could see was the evil smile of Arbiter Death.

Time to Change

Heather's painful reminder.

It would take a series of events and encounters to get Heather back in the right direction. The first was after a battle in Atlas Park. During an encounter with the Villains of Paragon City, Heather was sent on a chase to find a captured teammate. She returned to Atlas Park to find Victory One in combat with the vile Open Arsenal, the individual that originally shot Heather. Jack defeated Arsenal, but he was wounded in the process. Her feelings of pride at what this brave man had done, seemingly on her behalf, mixed with her immediate concern and care for his well-being. It was at that moment she allowed herself to admit she was in love. Heather had a feeling that Jack may love her too, but knew that things would never be possible if she continued on her dark road. She had to make a change.

Her next path changing encounters both took place at the base. After a group meeting, Heather was approached by the newly-named Platinum Sentinel, Esmereta. Esme showed great concern for the trial that Heather had endured and offered her assistance in biologically cloning her a real arm to replace her bionic one. Heather declined at first, still preferring the artificial arm as a constant reminder of her tragedy. Yet, she would never forget Esme's offer and would eventually take her up on it.

The last straw in correction came after a confrontation with Neo Inferno, the brash son of Sol Imperium. Sol and Neo had a past which involved the vile Arbiter Death. In an effort to find out more about his enemy, Neo had repeatedly tried to question Heather on the events of her capture and torture. Fortunately, Liberty Vanguard and Pearl Sword were able to step in and protect Heather, although they suffered pains of their own in the ordeal. Quick also to come to Heather's aid was Wallop-Woman (Teresa). The powerful Sentinel was able to show her soft side and get Heather out of harm's way to a quiet spot. Teresa wiped the tears from Heather's eyes and spoke nothing but encouraging words. Heather had found in Teresa a new friend, one that would become very close as time passed.

If not for the intervention of many Sentinels including; Victory One, Liberty Vanguard, Pearl Storm, and Wallop-Woman, Heather could very well have continued down a much darker road in Paragon. She is still thankful to have these friends in her life.

Restoration

Heather and Jack; a couple at last?

Having made up her mind to change, Heather once again began surrounding herself with her friends and teammates. Although, she would never forget the tragedy she endured, she no longer saught vengeance. She was actually confronted by several of the villains who were involved in her capture and ensuing torture. Surprisingly, these encounters were not on hostile terms. In each circumstance, Heather was able to control her fear and anger and actually felt a sense of sorrow and pity for the life each of her one-time assailants chose to live. This was a big step in Heather's ultimate change.

Along with changing her heart and mind, Heather knew that one more important change was in order. It was time to take Esmereta up on her offer. Using techniques far beyond Heather's understanding, Esme was able to clone a new right arm for her. After a, at times painful but ultimately successful, bonding surgical procedure, Heather had her arm restored to her.

Of course, she had to learn how to use her arm all over again; first as a "normal" individual would, then incorporating her powers. During her rehabilitation, Esme was a constant source of knowledge, advice, and encouragement. Once again, she had found a consistent and positive Sentinel to look up to; someone she could call both leader and friend. In fact, Heather began to eye the relationship that Esme had with her own husband, Commander Prime, and once again she started to see the relationship possibilties that could be in store for her and Victory One.

The New Lady Bombadier

The new and improved Lady B!

Feeling completely whole for the first time in quite awhile, Heather once again saw rays of light. Having been changed beyond her wildest dreams, both positively and negatively, those around her began to see a "new" Lady Bombardier. Unlike the reserved Ohio girl that first came to Paragon City, she started to break the shell a little. Although she was most comfortable with her friends and teammates, she was no longer afraid to venture out alone if need be. She was even surprised the day she came to the base and found her grandfather's bombardier jacket hanging in her locker. Once again she could don the piece of memorabilia that was a strong reminder of what she was truly fighting for.

After hard work and effort, she was promoted to the Bronze Sentinel rank, although she didn't, and still doesn't, feel like she earned it. She started to team with other Sentinels like Call of the Night and Shaw Lwhon. In her civilian life as Heather Blain, she got a promotion also. Atlas North High School hired her to be a History and English teacher for the rest of the semester, which certainly added to her ability to keep up with the rising costs of rent and hospital bills.

It was at North Atlas that Heather first noticed one of her students, Kenny Molton. He was in her third period English class and she observed that he was a very respectful young man. Anyways, on her way home one evening, she caught Kenny using his powers outside after school. Obviously, there was even more to his story. So after confronting Kenny about his "gifts", she decided to take a chance and refer Kenny to the United Sentinels of America. Heather was later very pleased to find out that Kenny had been accepted as a member and that he was in fact a teen hero with the name Kid Kuiper.

Finding "Victory" in Love?

Victory One had seemingly cared for Heather since the day that he saved her, took her in his arms, and got her to safety. He had obviously overlooked her "issues" and helped her to stand during a time when she could not stand alone. Jack had been with her through the worst of times and now it was time for him to be with her in the best of times. Even knowing the way that he felt about her, Heather was unable to take the next step until she changed her heart and left the past where it needed to be...in the past. So, with that aparently done, the two were ready to take their relationship to a deeper level.

Seeing that his bachelor pad in Steel Canyon was much too empty, he asked Heather to move in with him. Of course, she accepted immediately. So, Heather packed the few things, at least "few" in her opinion because Jack claimed she was brining everything under the sun, and they moved her into the loft that would become her new home. Other Sentinels helped in the process and it actually became quite the event and a nice change of pace from dealing with the evils of Paragon.

It didn't take long for Heather to realize that she made the right choice. Not only did her love for Jack grow, but everything around her seemingly began to fall into place. She would receive two further promotions within the United Sentinels of America; first to Silver rank and then to Gold. With each new position came more responsibility including recruiting and interviewing applicants. Yet, Heather met each new challenge head on, confident and secure more than ever knowing Jack was always there to support and guide her, and surprisingly she was able to balance being a Sentinel, with teaching, and moving forward with the love of her life.

Same Old Place, New Faces...

((to be continued...))

Friends and Allies

Before Heather joined the United Sentinels of America, she really had no one that she could turn to for help. Sure there were heroes that she teamed with from time to time, but she didn't have the group of friends that would be there for her through thick and thin. Well, she has definitely found her "family" since becoming a member of the USoA. Fighting alongside her fellow Sentinels, Heather has found her place and true home. Of course, they proved how much they care for her by standing with her throughout her various trials and emotional ordeals. Recently, Heather was given the high honor of becoming a Gold Sentinel, which signifies both her hard work and their ultimate trust in her ability.

Recently, Heather has put her focus into spending more time with the man she loves, Victory One. Heather is excited in what the future holds, very happy to spend whatever time she can with her love. She also has continued to spend time with her fellow Sentinels; especially her good friend and mentor Liberty Vanguard, her newly found friends who have become like sisters Miss Thornbird and Blink Girl, and her friends Pearl Sword, Galacta Boi, Wallop-Woman, Esmereta, Hinto, Radiant Reptile, American-Marvel, Sky Trueheart, Cherry Spade, Neon Flash, Hurricane McShane, American Maiden, Call of the Night, Shaw Lwhon, Justice Shield, Justice Omega, Hammer of the People, and Ultradynamic and her fiance Captain Crosshairs who is a member of the All Star Sentinels of America.

Powers

Powering up for battle.

Heather's extraordinary powers came into being when she was exposed to the two blasts of extreme temperatures during the accident she had when she was teenager. Somehow, the mutation that she was born with made it possible for her body to absorb the explosions. Since her parents wanted to keep Heather's "abnormality" a secret, they decided not to send her to a doctor. Although this may have been fortunate for the reputation of the family and was probably best in the long run for protecting their daughter, Heather kind of had to "wing it" when it came to her powers.

Gradually, she began to display signs that she could manipulate and control both fire and ice. And in Heather's case, it really was hit-and-miss! Yet, over time, and usually under the patient and watchful eye of her loving grandfather, she learned to control her "rare" abilities. In fact, it was her grandfather that took her to see a hero, who in turn gave Heather much needed guidance and direction in developing her talents. But like most young heroes, her powers have continued to manifest and she has effectively found new ways in which to harness the extreme temperatures at her disposal.

Fire

Bombs-away!
  • expell fire from her hands and arms: including small flares, balls of fire, fire-energy sniper blasts, and ranged fire attacks that deal damage to multiple enemies
  • generate massive amounts of heat within her lungs in order to exhale a firey a blast of air from her mouth, like a blowtorch
  • launch an accurate blast of fire and smoke at an object that would suck the air out of it and demobilize it for a short period of time
  • send a handfull of tiny embers up in the air making a fire-like rain fall from the sky
  • harness the massive amount of heat from deep within her body in order to send forth an explosive blast of fire from her body, damaging all objects within a small radius- after doing so, Heather is drained of all her energy for a short period of time
  • if fallen in battle, the heat inside her body can rise to such a level that a massive blast of fire is sent from her body knocking back all objects her radius and reviving her to the point where she can continue to fight

Ice

Ice-hammers!
  • cover her hands with thick layers of ice, literally making them like hammers - useful for bashing and smashing objects and for melee combat
  • fashion a sword of ice which can be used to slice and slash at objects
  • encase other objects in ice - ability to draw cold air and moisture from her body and: touch an object, freezing it to the ground in a chamber of ice or launching a icey blast from a ranged distance, freezing the object to the ground, effectively immobilizing it
  • expell icey particles from her hands and freeze the air around objects in order to slow down movement
  • create a patch of ice beneath her feet, making the surface slippery for all objects in the viciinity - the level of control over this power has made it possible to keep both her and her allies from the effects of the icey surface

Other

Rapid punches.
  • ability to run at a faster than normal speed
  • accelerated rate of healing; wounds and bruises heal much more quickly than the normal human body
  • super-charged adrenal system which allows Heather to draw upon stores of untapped stamina and endurance in stressful situations
  • increased damage with her powers with each successful attack - basically based on her emotions the more she hits, the more confident she becomes and the more damage her powers can inflict on an object
  • high level of focus that allows Heather to use her powers in situations where she would normally find it difficult - for example, when she is being held or immobilized, she can often break free long enough in order to use her powers
  • during the dark phase of her life, Heather learned to focus all of her emotions in order to force her body into a frenzied, rage of punches

Abilities

Always eager to pilot new planes.

Aside from her extraordinary powers, which aren't uncommon in Paragon City, Heather brings with her an assortment of other talents. Of course, tops on the list is her flying ability. The training she received in the air from her grandfather and the numerous pilots she was surrounded by in her youth, has helped Heather become quite the accomplished pilot. She can fly most propeller-based single and dual engine aircraft; including many of the fighters that were used by America in World War II. Yet, Heather's expertise hasn't stopped there, as she has started to fly jet-engine planes and has even branched out into the world of helicoptors. Unfortunately, Heather's wide array of super powers does not include the ability to fly, but it hasn't stopped her! She quickly got the hang of flying with a jet-pack and recently jumped at the opportunity to fly with rocket boots; the method of travel she uses extensively today.

After college, she had planned on continuing her piloting career, but after the air show was shut down, she fell back on her degree which was in education as a teacher. The multitude of war stories from her grandpa and his buddies had always held her interest as a child, so she decided that studying history further in college would be something she would enjoy. Eager for the challenge in reaching America's youth, Heather takes her grandfather's tales and her knowledge in English and History into the classroom as a high school teacher. Of course, many would agree that being able to be patient and understanding with the teenagers of today is in its own right an ability and talent! Yet, Heather continues to look at everyday of school as an opportunity to grow and improve, for her motto is "The moment I stop learning, is the moment I stop being a teacher!"

Costumes

Lady Bombardier's costume has changed since she first came to Paragon City: (left to right) her first costume, the costume which fit around her robotic arm, and the costumes she currently wears.

Personality

Emotion and Heather come hand-in-hand.

When she arrived in Paragon, the shy girl from the American midwest was encased in a thick shell. She wasn't very outgoing and sure wouldn't have been the first to start a conversation. After she met Liberty Vanguard and joined the United Sentinels of America, she started to open up a bit. Overall, Heather is a very good-natured person and friendly with everyone she meets. In fact, there aren't many heroes that she has met that she doesn't easily get along with. At times, she might come off as giggly or bubbly and may act kind of ditzy, but she is in reality rather intelligent. Her youthful and innocent nature is what makes her a tad bit naive though. Those that know her well realize this, but she still fears being mocked or looked down upon and will often sit quietly until someone else initiates conversation.

Those who have been around Heather long enough would attest to the notion that Heather tends to wear her emotions on her sleeves. Yes, Heather is a crier; she cries often and over what others might consider menial or untrivial matters. Although Heather had always been very sensitive, her now very overreactive personality can certainly be attributed to the ordeal she suffered when she was captured and tortured by the Villains of Paragon City. Yet, she will quickly change her attitude if scolded or given the opportunity to lean on someone's shoulder. She knows deep down that she must continue to get a "grip" on her emotions, especially if she wants to be a good example to the younger Sentinels.
