Ascalon, is my first ever lvl 50 in City of Heroes. He is based loosely on myself even using my real name. I go his code name from Final Fantasy XI, for it was the name of a Dragon slaying sword you could get in the game. Also Ascalon does have loose referances to diffrent superheroes including Cyclops and Havok, though ironically i've never liked Cyclops.

In the Beginning
Matthew lived a normal life as a child, born and raised in Florida. He spent most of his life being raised by his father, Due to his parents breaking up but that didn't stop him from living as normal of a life as possible. Even as a child Matthew had a sense of honor and duty in him, he always loved the stories of the Ancient Knights and Kings and in his own way followed thous codes even if they didn't exist in this day and age. Eventually Matthew graduated from the University of Florida with degrees in Archeology and Ancient History. During one of his last days of College his Professor offered him the chances of a lifetime. A rare and Ancient ruins had been discovered in Germany, and Matthew's Professor asked him to come along. Little did Matthew know this would change his life forever.
The Secrets of the Sword
For several weeks Matthew felt like he was living a dream, exploring ruins thats hadn't been seen in years, and strangely all thank to the Rikti. Who if they would have never attacked these ruins would still be lost. Even with the rare artifacts and items they did discovered in the ruins, Professor Duro seemed very unhappy with the results. He seemed to be after something in particular, but no one knew what. Eventually it was time to pack up, but before leaving Matthew decided to check a small crack he hadn't noticed before. When he did a secret room was discovered and inside was a sword, but as Matthew approached the sword the ruins themselves began to cave in and Matthew appeared to be buried alive. Thats when something strange and magically happened, the sword spoke to Matthew, it claimed it could help him. The Sword said he was forged long ago and contained the spirit of a powerful Dragon and together they could both be free from the ruins. Not wanting to die, Matthew agreed and took the sword into his hands and when he, he felt powers awaken in him as the sword merged with his body. Fire and Energy flew through his body and allowed him to create beams of energy to blast a hole out of the ruins and into safety. Realizing he could let anyone know about this Matthew, lied about how he got free and continued on as if everything was fine.
Using what he earned from the expedition, Matthew begin to travel the world learning try to discover the nature of his powers and how better to use them. After several years of travel Matthew learned of the increased activity in Paragon City. Realize he had a chance to be both a hero and make a difference Matthew made his way to Paragon City. As Matthew made his way to Paragon City he was attack and knocked out of the air as a group of robed men attacked him. They called themselves the Circle of Thorns and they seem to have been waiting for Matthew. As he fought them, he discovered the truth as the Leader of this band of Circle of Thorns was none other then his old College Professor. As the battle continued Matthew, shocked by what he just learned and the fact he had never used his powers to this extent, panic and his powers went out of control, causing him to explode with energy seemingly destroy the Circle and everything in his path. When Matthew woke up he was discovered by the member of M.A.G.I. They took him in, helped him recovered and even gave him a suit to help control his powers again. As well as a job in Paragon U. and a home. So on that day Matthew became Ascalon, taking the name of the sword that gave him his powers, and a new Hero was born, ready to defend and protect Paragon City.
Changes,Friends and More
It took a while for Matthew to adjust to the craziness of Paragon City, but slowly he did. He also began to meet new and interesting people, including The Cape, the Local Radio Station that usually hangs out in the Pocket D, and its many fans. Matthew also gained admission into the Super group the League of Justice, this farther helped in his training and control of his powers. Just as the things seem to be getting better for Matthew his world took one help of a loop, while on a mission., he encountered some Circle of Thorns. Something that seems to be a common trait lately. During several of his dealing with ether the Circle or even other forms of evil magic, Matthew begun to suffer black outs, when he'd awake everything around him would be destroyed. He couldn't explain it, nor did he know why it was happen. Then one day while on a mission, he felt like he was going to black out but didnt, he felt great pain rip through his body as he transformed into humanoid Dragon. Scared and shocked by his transformation Matthew lashed out on the Circle slaughtering them, and quickly flying off. Over the next few days the transformation became more common but Matthew seemed to have some mild control over them. Still afraid he went to seek help. He turned to someone who had become a trusted friend recently the talented DJ Angel. While helping her in Croatoa, Matthew explained to her what was happening, during one of the mission, a spirit seem to try and take over his Dragon form, but thanks to Angel they were able to remove it. Left with more questions Matthew continue to seek for answers and try to control his transformation. Thats when life through another twist of fate into Matthew lap. While in Steel Canyon he discovery a young woman named Rachel, and though it turned out rough at first they started to be come friends but almost as so as they got to talking she left in a hurry. After several weeks she returned seeking Matthew's help and revealing her name is really Morgan Reynolds, also known as Penelope Unbound and after some discussing asked for Matthew's help with what be revealed, as information about her family. From there though Morgan has many secrets they became very close friends. Eventually Matthew realized where he needed his answers, and needed to return to Germany where he first found his powers, but it seems Morgan wouldn't let him go alone for they went together, where they're friend became so much more....

Finding the Truth
Matthew and Morgan went to Germany seeking answers for why the Circle seems to constantly be after him, and why his body seems to be able to transform. They found that and more.. Returning to the Ruins where Matthew first found his sword, they also encountered the Circle of Thorns. Attempts to sneak in were foiled and the two of them soon were forced to fight the Circle. During the battle the ground gave in and they fell through, Morgan was captured, while Matthew tried to fight his way to her, forcing to unleash a Nova to deal with the remaining Circle members. This left Matthew weaken for some time. During this Time the Circle, lead by Matthew's old Professor were attempt to use Morgan as bait to bring Matthew to them, and threaten to use her as a host for a new Succubus. Matthew at the same time, encountered the spirit of the Dragon, where he learned the Truth.
Long ago Dragons protected the Land, lead by the Dragon that new guides Matthew, when a powerful Demon named Tyrkis arrived and turned the Dragons to evil. One lone Warrior stood against them, that Warrior being Matthew's Ancestor named Mathias Dragonmage. Mathias battled the Dragon, freeing him and together forged a sword that would be used to defeat Tyrkis, sealing him away forever. It appears the Circle learn of Tyrkis and now plan to revive him, and need the sword, or at least the power of it to do so. As for Matthew's transformations they weren't meant to harm him, but was actual his powers trying to protect him. Learning this gave Matthew new hope an determination, which he quickly used to find and save Morgan. The Professor escaped but Morgan was safe and Matthew had found what he was looking for. Together the two of them celebrated, spending the rest of there trip in Germany together were their friendship blossomed into love and more. If fact on the last day of their trip Matthew gave Morgan a gift, a small ring, to be a promise of his love for her and when they are free of their burden, a promise that Matthew wants to spend the rest of his life with her.
The Battle with Tyrkis
After returning from Germany Matthew and Morgan continued on with their daily lives, when one day Matthew decided to take Morgan out for a special date. Hoping to relive the magic of Germany and have a very normal night together. Everything went great until they were returning home, the sky went black and a legion of Circle of Thorn attacked with Tyrkis leading the way. Matthew foolishly attack Tyrkis only awakening his true power and tried to fight him on his own. Morgan got angry with Matthew and though he told her to stay way, she helped Matthew fight. Even together they were not strong enough to stop Tyrkis, but the arrival of their friends from the Cape helped even the odds. The battle raged on for a while, and took Morgan being injured to awaken Matthew's true power as he transformed into a begin of pure energy, and unleashed his full power at Tyrkis. Together with his friends and his desire to protect Morgan, Matthew destroyed Tyrkis but at a cost... After waking up from the battle in the hospital Matthew discovered his transformation had drained him of all his powers and they needed time to recover.
So while they recovered from their injures for the first time in years Matthew had to deal with being normal. After a week Matthew's powers did returned and helped him save some people from a burning building. In that time without his powers Matthew learned what it truly meant to be a hero and now carries the lesson to heart as he continues to fight and protect the city and thous he cares about. For you never know when evil will rise again. Also his love for Morgan continue to grow as she discovered her own answers and found her long lost brother.
Twisted Visions
Life for Matthew and Morgan was returning to some what normalcy, they even found Morgan's long lost brother who turned out to be none other the Artemis Tau, the fiancée of DJ Angel. Ironic that Matthew's small circle of friends were always considered his family and in some way now they are.
Shortly after this Matthew's world took an unexpected twist, while on his way to work at one of the Paragon City Universities campuses, Matthew was sucked into a demonic twisted version of his world. This world was taken over and controlled by a mysterious woman known simply as the Queen. No one knew who or what the Queen really is, but some how she took over the world and twisted it into a dark demonic vision of itself where demons, monsters and magic ruled. Worst yet most heroes were ether killed or turned into twisted versions of themselves to serve the Queen. One of her most loyal subjects was this worlds Matthew himself, known as Malieus in this world. Malieus was everything Ascalon struggle not to be, he destroyed his family and friends, even rumored to have killed the woman he loved all for the sake of the Queen. While Matthew struggled to deal with this world and find a way home, it seems Malieus had taken Matthew place as was beginning to cause havoc in Matthew place. Until he spotted Penelope Unbound, the woman who ironically he too once loved in his world. Malieus then set in motion plans to capture Morgan and make her his.
Around the same time Matthew had discovered the Morgan of this world, simply calling herself Penelope. She survived Malieus attack and joined with a band of refugees who struggle to fight the Queen. She also allowed the leader of the refugees to consider her his daughter, to help bring a bit a closure to her life. Together with her adopted father Demetri, Penelope helped Matthew make there way to the Queen's palace in attempts to return him home, but also trying to contain her own feelings for the man who resembles the man she once loved. The Trio eventually reached the Palace and battled a Shade of the Queen, a powerful copy used when the Queen is away. Sadly for Matthew to return home Demetri sacrificed his life, and Matthew and Penelope destroyed the Shade, what happened to that world after Matthew stepped into the portal is unknown....
Morgan on the other hand had her handful with Malieus after the fact Matthew had been mission for a few days she is then attacked by this sadistic twisted version of him. Little did Malieus know that unlike his version of her, this Morgan is very well trained and capable of handling herself in battle. In the end Malieus was reduced to nothing but ash, just as Matthew literally landed on top of Morgan as a portal opened. Reunited the two lover returned home, after an experience nether would forget. What they don't know is a mysterious figure picked up some of Malieus's ashes, what they plan to do with them is unknown.
A time for Rest
After everything they've been through Matthew decided to take a mild break from being an active Superhero, concentrating more on working at the Universities. In fact shortly after his experience in the alternate world, Matthew was offered a full time job in the Founders Fall campus, he also moved into a larger apartment in Founders Falls, making it easier for him to go to work and visit Morgan on his free time. Together Matthew and Morgan also shared their first Holidays together and for a Christmas present, Matthew gave Morgan tickets to anywhere in the world for the two of them to share a wonderful week alone. She chose Australia. So what awaits the couple in the land down under? No one really knows but Matthew is hoping for a very normal, but exciting vacation for both of them.
When the Cape comes off
When Matthew isn't saving the day, running a mission, or join others in a Task Force, he's using seen at any of the Paragon University Campus, using teaching Ancient History. If not there then he's ether at the Pocket D joining in the fun of the Cape DJ s, or if its Friday night acting as an unofficial Bodyguard and supplier of Root beer to the Lovely DJ Angel. Of course you can also expect Matthew to be spending time with his girlfriend, but if you need a hand he usually is willing to help.

Matthew actual wears glasses out of costume, he needs them to see, and his costume version gives read-outs that lets him see his enemies health.
