The Shaman is trained in magicks and healing arts, though he rarely bothers with them anymore. The only vestige of his shamanistic heritage that Shaman still practices is the ability to enter the dreamtime and walk amongst the dreams of his targets. Shaman has melded his vampiric abilities into this dreamwalking allowing him to move freely from one realm to the next (teleport), and while his dream powers are not nearly as powerful as when he was alive, his vampiric strength and speed more than make up for it in his opinion.

Origin

James Blackbear was brought up on the Praetorean Earth knowing he was going to be the salvation of his people. From the age of three, he has been trained in meditation and magic, preparing him for the day when he would become a shaman for his people. James knew that his grandfather had been the first to wear a mask and go by the name of The Shaman back in the 40’s, fighting against the government that had oppressed his people and driven them almost to genocide. And James knew that his Grandfather had died fighting for his people. The mantle of The Shaman had been taken up by James's father who had also died with little changing for the Lakota people. James decided that his powers and abilites would not be enough and went to Paragon City to find more.

While there, he came across the Vampire known as Want. Seeing her power and magics, he decided that they must be his. Through deception and seduction, James convinced her to turn him into a vampire like herself. Once the task was completed, however, James betrayed her, literally stabbing her in the back with a wooden stake. Claiming her books and artifacts for his own, James rushed back to the reservation to study her magics and his new powers.

Unfortunately for the people of the Rosebud reservation, James never learned to control his hunger. In months he was the only living thing on the reservation, having killed the very people who he was supposed to lead to victory over the white man.

Wandering the South Dakota wasteland, searching for a vision to give him new direction in life, and crying tears of blood, James came across Neverending who had heard of the slaughter on the reservation and was seeking out the cause. Neverending had no troubles convincing James to join his cause of world domination. Taking the name of The Crying Shaman, James now acts as an assassin for the All Sinister Terror Squadron.

Personality

Shaman is a killer, pure and simple. He sees the rest of the world as inferior and as food. Some of the food is more entertaining than others and so he forms “relationships” with them to further play with his food. He has no real loyalty to anyone but himself and will happily kill any of his so-called allies if he feels the need. He follows Never’s orders in all things, but would probably betray him to save his own life.

Trivia

Shaman is the Praetorian version of Wakan Man, a shaman hero who is a member of the All Star Teen Sentinels.

While Shaman’s vampiric abilities make him much tougher and more powerful in the physical world, Wakan’s dreamwalking is much more controlled.
