Background
Arrival
Holo Lad first appeared several years ago, seemingly out of nowhere. He was eager to join The Artful Dodgers, and though he was strangely stiff and polite, the others accepted him as one of their own. Due to his exceptional ability to use computers and electronic devices of all sorts, it wasn't long before he was manning the Basement's security computer on his off-hours. Though his demeanor caused many to speculate that he may be an artificial life form or robot, he has never confirmed nor denied such accusations. His outward appearance, however, is artificial, a semi-substantial hologram that covers his entire body. No one has ever seen what he actually looks like underneath this facade.
The Rularuu Incident
Not long after joining, the Dodgers' beloved Basement was attacked by invading Rularuu led by evil shadow versions of Starlight-Girl. It was during this attack that Holo Lad was able to use the base security computer to modify his holographic Phantom Army, stretching them into an impenetrable force field, protecting himself and others caught unawares in the attack. This gave the other, more capable Dodgers a chance to intervene and ultimately repel the onslaught. It was because of this event that Holo Lad was assigned as Chief Security Officer for the Dodgers' Basement.
A Marked Change
Holo Lad's powers originally involved not only holographic projection, but also radiation emission. This changed, however, when Holo Lad mysteriously requested the use of a device that had been invented by Reese Taylor, AKA Pyromechanic. The device, a sonic-based welding unit, had only recently been developed by the young prodigy. Holo Lad did not allow his friend to observe his use of the machine, but afterward, Holo no longer emitted radiation. Instead, he seemed to gain control of localized ambient pressure fronts and was able to create and direct gusts of wind from an unknown source. His holographic abilities did not change.
Phuong Mai, and a New Look
Phuong Mai, a new and mysterious member of the Dodgers, seemed to take an instant liking to Holo Lad when she joined. They spent much time together, Holo enjoying having someone to talk to as he manned the security computer, and Mai enjoying Holo's non-expectant company. Eventually, their conversations turned to his current looks, and the decidedly unnatural components of it such as the odd, large eyes, the pale white skin, and the awkward, nerdy clothing. On her suggestions and advice, he altered his holographic visage to its current form: taller, with more color in his skin, and a more handsome face, along with a new set of clothes. Holo and Mai became inseparable, and their relationship developed into a romantic one.
A Stunning Revelation
One day, a teenager named Chapek Knight joined the Dodgers. He was distrustful of Holo Lad, and became overly fond of Phuong Mai. Not being too trustworthy himself, it turned out that Chapek was really Blackhat 411, AKA Moses Waterson, a long-time Dodger enemy who'd come to kill his supposed nemesis, Casval Regelis. Moses had used advanced holographic technology similar to Holo Lad's own projections in order to fool the Dodgers into allowing him access to the Basement. Due to his jealousy of Holo Lad, Moses attacked him first, managing to somehow hack into his computer, a feat thought impossible even by the genius Taylor couple.
Because of his super strong and super fast robot body, Moses was easily able to subdue Holo Lad and disrupt his holographic disguise, revealing Holo Lad's true robotic form to the other Dodgers that had come to help. And that's when Moses made a startling discovery for himself: Holo Lad's body was made using the same technology as Moses' own robot body. Since Moses invented and designed most of the technologies in his own body, this meant that Holo Lad was a creation of Moses Waterson!
Jack Travers managed to damage Moses enough to send him into retreat. Phuong Mai had become so agitated by the attack that her nuclear powers began to overload, threatening the entire base. With the computer down, the containment room usually used in this situation had no power, so Holo Lad was forced to use his own. With all of his power reserves used for holding the containment field in place, Holo Lad was unable to restore his holographic guise, or talk, or even move until the crisis and radiation was dealt with.
The attack both physical and cyber, and the over use of Holo Lad's power to deal with Mai's overload, had somehow resulted in small changes to Holo Lad's programming. Only time will tell what that actually means for Holo and his friends.
Powers
Holographic Control
Holo Lad is able to very precisely project and control real-time, 3-dimensional holographic imagery around him. He is able to use this ability to confuse and blind his enemies, or to provoke them into attacking each other or a non-existent phantom army. He is also able to precisely control his own appearance, including being able to alter it so he blends seamlessly into the background. He is able to make his holograms completely realistic, indistinguishable from a real person or object. However, aside from his own facade, his holograms are intangible, possessing no mass or solidity whatsoever.
Applications inside the Basement
Due to modifications of the main security computer during the Rularuu attack, Holo is able to tap into the Basement's main power grid and project his holograms as solid objects. He can use this ability to create impenetrable force fields anywhere within the Basement, as well as other tangible - but temporary - objects. This proprietary technology is an integral part of the Basement's containment room, a room utilizing both arcane and technological methods for a 100% impenetrable environment. Holo is unable to use this force field generation ability outside of the Dodgers' Basement. He is also able to utilize the main computer to create remote duplicates of himself within the Basement, which are fully functional, temporary copies.
Radiation Emission
Though unusable now, Holo Lad was able to emit and direct an unknown form of radiation. He seemed to be able to modulate it to produce various effects, from weakening his enemies to strengthening his allies. He is currently unable to use these powers at this time due to having repaired the damage to his casing.
Weather Control
A simplified term for his ability to control localized ambient pressure fronts and generate wind. He is able to generate such localized effects as a small storm cloud, a tornado, fog, and ice storms, among others. He is also able to fly using a combination of these abilities. These powers, along with his holographic projections, make his a combat style that is decidedly non-lethal.
OOC Info
Holo Lad (currently Holo-Lad) is my second attempt at a controller, and is the one I decided to keep. There is a LOT of Data in him, and indeed he started out as a rather direct homage to the Star Trek character, but he's come into his own since then. Though I haven't gotten either of his incarnations up to 50, he's enjoyable to play and has become an integral member of The Artful Dodgers.
Current Status
Holo Lad is currently the Chief Security Officer for the Dodgers, and is still seeing Phuong Mai romantically.
