Here it begins...
A lot has happened to this woman. Take a look at her past. That's where it all started. This is how she became Jade.
It Continues
As if I could explain it all... here is my attempt to share with you what makes up this woman's past.
A New Start
Jade Bernough had come home to find her husband dead and her daughter missing. An English teacher at the local high school, she'd been late coming home because the school had needed her to interpret for one of their deaf students. After spending two years searching for her daughter she got a lead that she might be in the Rogue Isles. In an attempt to be closer to that location, to be near her dear long time friend Kai Keller, take in a change of scenery and to silence the adorable yet persistent pestering of her niece she took a position at The Zenvious Foundation as the Human Resources Director under the leadership of Mr. Zen (Zenvious).
Knowing that her abilities would become evident she went ahead and registered as a hero and joined the ranks of The Dauntless Reverie. At that time she felt it necessary to keep her non-hero work separate from her hero work. Kai Keller, already a registered hero under the name of Psi Monk went with her and together with that organization they accomplished a good many things in Paragon. There came a time however when it became necessary for Jade to quietly step down from the ranks of The Dauntless and begin to represent the Foundation as a hero as well as an employee. Psi Monk joined her in doing so.
I Did What?
Jade didn't handle some of her stress very well as time went on. Eventually there came moments when she "changed" into another persona. It was her own self but one more -free-. "Claudia" as she was called met Connor Knight, who inadvertently started the chain of events that resulted in the death of Jade's niece. The had a brief relationship that ended around the time Jade met James Broderick (Pyronova). Though he was quite a bit younger than her they became fast friends.
Jade and the "Claudia" persona were eventually merged with the help of Kai Keller and some say it was one of the best things to have happened to her as her personality has shifted almost drastically from stiff businesswoman to that of a more relaxed woman.
James went missing soon after the personalities were merged and Jade was devastated, though she knew he was alive due to a rose of living flame he'd given her as a gift. She kept him in her prayers and was overjoyed, if not surprised when he showed back up in Paragon. After some explaining and some time getting to know each other again, they are and remain good friends. He even joined the ranks of the Foundation which made her very happy.
She Didn't Die?
She watched her niece wither away, dying before her eyes while everyone searched for something to keep her alive.. to save her. An option. A Kheldian. All the events surrounding Zoe have played a major roll in Jade's life. For all intents and purposes she thinks of Zoe Brightstar as a daughter.
Family Galore
It's neverending and she wouldn't have it any other way.
Yes Mom, I'm Alive
Meah returned and Jade didn't know.. didn't find out until she was gone. Meah Twilight, her daughter now a warshade, has gone through tremendous changes since the last time Jade saw her. The second time Meah returned Jade knew and they began to talk. Their relationship is strained but growing. At this moment her daughter is gone again, having left a note behind saying that she's alright and has something important to take care of. Jade has no doubt she will see her again.
During the recent deaging crises Meah made an appearance. As did someone else. Jake- an older Jake. Once again there is a son older than he should be and Jade is left in confusion.
She'll Always Remember
Tim O'Reiley, who preferred to be called Lec, became someone very dear to Jade. They developed a friendship that blossomed into a romance. That romance then led to an engagement. That engagement ended, however, but they remained friends. It was only a short time after that relationship ended that Lec was murdered in a most gruesome way. He is remembered in her heart as a kind man and a good friend and she continues to miss him.
Sometimes Waiting Pays Off
After her relationship with Lec ended, her friend Kai Keller was her comfort. She saw him as her rock, having been beside her since her husbands death and even before... as they'd been friends since college. He had loved her that entire length of time and now she looked at him differently. Perhaps this was grasping at something she didn't want to lose but grasp she did. Discussing his feelings and hers they decided to try. And try they have. They are currently engaged to be married.
Gathering Children
The plight of a teenage boy named Jake Darksong tugged at her heartstrings and she found herself stepping out on a limb. An abused boy who had death to look forwards to at the hands of his father he deserved a family... and so she demanded a meeting with his father and after a discussion he signed the papers and Jade became his legal guardian.
Jade and her fiance have recently adopted Little Miss Vagary. They were asked by a friend, Kaijitsu, to take on the responsibility for the young girl after the abandonment of her adopted mother, and death of her adopted father. There have been complications as they discover that Vagary is not twelve years old but eight. This, along with various signs and symptoms of something they don't understand, have given them more things to deal with. This hasn't stopped their love for Vagary and it's as if the little one has always been a part of their lives.
There are quite a few young heroes within the Foundation who Jade treat as if they are her children, caring for them... worrying... and doing her best to be a mother to them when they need one. Included in that list are Graff (Graffiti Samurai), Zeal (Zeal Drain) and Bobby (Bobby Thistle), and Nick (Toxpin).
An Unexpected Blessing
Since the birth of Meah, Jade had been unable to bear children. Yet... Kai was able to get past that. Something magical occurred and she found herself pregnant. She was excited. He was excited. But something was different. A pregnancy that should last nine months lasted four. The baby boy inside sapped her energy as well as the energy it could access outside of his mother's body. This led to the use of orichalcum as an energy source for the purpose of keeping mother and baby alive. At first Jade sat underneath the Foundation's powersource for two hours a day. That was sufficient to get her by. Eventually, Mr. Zen gave her a necklace which did what the powersource did but was much more convenient, as she could wear the necklace beneath her clothing.
There was a scare for a short time as 98% of the DNA markers for Jeffrey (That was the name they chose for their son... the name of Jade's late husband who was Kai's best friend) were found to match Mike Mars (Mr. Protagonist). After more testing proof was found that Kai was indeed the father but it is still in question how and why those DNA markers match Mike.
When video of Jade was reviewed it was found that she was being teleported away (missing from this time itself) for a short period of time (a hundredth of a second), an extremely small amount of time but gone nonetheless. Those teleportations coincided perfectly with the sudden growth of their son and with the nightmares. The Rikti had been taking Jade during those times and the only conclusion to come to was that while gone for only a hundredth of a second on our plane of time she was being held for days to weeks in another. They are pretty sure the Rikti responsible are the Iradu. A futuristic religious sect from the Rikti homeworld that has ties to Mike Mars and to an attempted kidnapping of Vagary.
Assuming that it was through RFID that she was being found, they inserted a jamming signal ((A reverse RFID) under her skin. This, unfortunately, meant that she would be unable to use her powers. As it had been put to her, "well, electricity plus electronics equals fizzle". And so, time went on until the Foundation was attacked by Clockwork Dawn and in response Jade used her powers. Within minutes she was gone, her jamming signal having shortcircuited and the Rikti taking their chance to teleport her.
She was gone a week. No "hundredth of a second" but a week. When she was returned she was no longer pregnant. This time they'd waited for her to deliver the child and kept it. Their son was gone.
It Only Goes On
Invasion and Dreams Postponed
The Rikti invasion brought a call to arms for the entire Foundation. While she and the rest of their family began to both work with the Vanguard in the Rikti War Zone and to fight off the invasion in the various city zones, Jade found it necessary to relegate her daughter, Vagary, to either the Foundation or to Pocket D for her own safety. This has caused a bit of strife. While she obeys, the young girl isn't too happy at not being allowed to use her abilities to help on the battlefront. Her mother on the otherhand, finds it a relief to know she's safe. There are so many of those she cares about that aren't.
Seul, a young man new to their organization has questioned Jade on her willingness to fight, has questioned her on anger, family, revenge and love. She'd found it hard to answer the questions but has done her best. She's talked to Jess about it as well as (Penny). Penny is to be her Maid of Honor at the wedding.
The wedding. It would have to be postponed. This threat had a grip on them all. Despite her deepest desire to be married now, it would have to wait. The ceremony would have to come later, when she could share it with everyone she loved.
Currently they've set the date as November 17th. They have, however, not gotten around to sending out invitations or making many plans due to their busy schedules.
Revelations
Lady Gray needed their services. Grouped with a few others, both from Paragon and the Isles, Jade went to fight the Rikti in the WarZone. Those fighting beside her were Shelly Lightfoot,Toxpin, Mr. Protagonist, Jet Falcon, Mindre, Death Rush, and Annie Matter.
She'd worked there a few times. Each time the memories hit her like bricks. The architecture... she'd seen it before. During her captivity, while subjected to what the Iradu had done to her, she'd had ample opportunity to look and to have the images burned into her mind.
This was no different, save for the fact that with her was someone who knew all to well what to look for. Mr. Protagonist, who that night revealed himself to be none other than the secret identity of Mike Mars, was able to spot the few Iradu among the multitude of Rikti. He questioned them, gathering information slowly as to the whereabouts of her son.
-He is here- -He is part of the FourthWorld Project-
Jade found herself confused, frustrated and overwhelmed by emotions. Yet she fought on. Finally they came upon the Honoree. None other than Hero One himself, Mike confronted him first, asking him forcibly to tell them where Jeffrey was. Mike staggered back in shock and Jade sent her own questions at the riktified being they were fighting.
"Wait, Jade. We'll talk about it after this is over. He told me where your son is." Those were Mike's words and she nodded. Tears fell as they fought and once it was over she turned, a pleading look on her face. It was then she was told.
The son of Jade Bernough and Kai Keller had been taken to the future and was now on earth again.
Their son was none other than Mike Mars himself.
Shock and disbelief. Not a young child but a young man. A noble and kind young man with a heart for humanity.
Their son. Her son.
After some discussion she went off, full of mixed emotions, to find Kai and tell him the good news.
- Life father, like son. Mike saw to it to remind Jade of her attempt to hit on him a year prior and Kai, when told of the news, couldn't help but bring up the conversation when Jade told him that Mike was a very attractive man.
Marriage
They were married on November 17th with a good number of the Foundation in attendance. They gave their blessing during the ceremony. The ceremony itself was a combination of both Christian and Buddhism wedding rites.
Changing
Through a bizarre failed ritual many of the Foundation members were reverted to children for approximately a 24 hour period. Jade was brought back to the age of twenty. She found it entertaining and freeing as her pressures seemed to lift off of her. However, she was still needed and spent most of that day searching for the spell, the ritual, the artifact that could right everything to where it should be. Zoe didn't take well to being put back to normal. She was aged to about nineteen and given a day to see what it would be like to grow.
Zoe: Running away and Pain
Zoe went missing. Jade felt horribly guilty and to top it all off, after having found Zoe's location in Arizona they were too late. Supposedly she was discharged from the hospital into the care of her father, Miles Fix. That is Jade's brother who had been declared legally dead. Jade is still unsure just what that means.
Mech led a group down to find and bring home Zoe. They succeeded, snatching her from the clutches of the Council yet again.
Months later she was taken again. This time it was by Arbiter Death. Torture took Brightstar away, the kheldian that had merged with Zoe. This sent her into a depression, understandably so. Jade and Kai flew her and Bobby to Japan where they stayed at the Kyoto Estate of Mr. Zen's.
Eventually they returned to Paragon. When they did, Zoe was still without her powers. The did, however, come back to her slowly. Yet they were slightly different.
Time to Rebuild
When The Zenvious Foundation closed the Keller family took the opportunity to take a big step. They would go to Nepal where Kai would rebuild the monastery. Jade would take a job with the government. So they moved.
Um... you're my Mom
In Nepal they were visited by Bendi Jones- daughter of Jade's friend Harbor and Jenna Hagan-, Bendi's husband Chase, and their three year old son Robbie came for a visit. They came with one purpose.
Insisting that Jade and Kai take a seat they explained just where Chase had come from. He was Meah's twin brother and Jade's biological son. A son she hadn't known existed.
And that makes you a Grandma!
She went through a variety of emotions but one look at Robbie in light of the new information and she was overjoyed.
Jade's a grandma! Needless to say they babysit as often as possible- especially given that Bendi and Chase work for the same METAchron for which Mr. Zen is the Avatar.
Robbie's full name is Robert Alexander- named so after Jet Falcon and Graff.
Her Studies
Always one for learning and growing, Jade is ever the student. She's been involved with magic since college. She's an Archmage, dealing with rituals, spells, incantations and other magic arts. At first she kept this side of her life quiet. Then, as time went on, it became something she needed to use for the Foundation's aid. At one time she was the Director of the Magic Department.
Beyond Electricity
Jade continues to learn Tai Chi from Kai and is becoming at least decently proficient.
In the past she learned the way of the Shinobi from Kaolin (Shinobi Archer) as well as took some magical instruction from Skeeve Plowse. Lore has also been a very big part of her maintained status as an Archmage.
The Family
In 2010 she came to find that she had another daughter. Mike had a twin- or more accurately another half brought about by the Rikti. Blue. The woman's life was a stark contrast to Jade's but they became close.
She watched as her son, Mike, found happiness in a relationship with Lexi Lucas and when the pair announced their engagement and the subsequent pregnancy she was ecstatic.
She happily took part in and helped organize the small family wedding of Zoe and Bobby.
Of course during this time there was terror and heartache too. Blue went missing, controlled by someone else. Mike did as well, controlled by his sister. Mike returned eventually. He went missing again after the rescue of his sister, having to go save the world from what she'd set into motion. Jade prayed every day for his safe return, though some considered him dead. When Lexi and other members of Tangent found and returned him once again she was relieved.
Unfortunately the amazing happiness reigned for only a few months before it happened. Her son, his fiance and their unborn child were forced to take a portal to a different dimension- to a different Earth. It was one they'd never return from. Jade would never see any of them again. The blow was one she couldn't have accepted or made it through without her husband or her faith. She clings moreso to Mike's twin, letting that bond help ease the pain of her loss.
As it is she goes on with her life, proud of what her son has gone on to do and cherishing her life and remaining family.
