History

At first, it was easier than he thought. It had taken a shooting at the school. He didn't even know the boy, but Chance held his hand as he died. As a crowd of students looked on, Chance watched a future end. That boy's blood dried on Chance's hands and clothes as the Police questioned him. He participated in the investigation to the fullest. It didn't matter. The police could not bring justice.

Putting on the mask didn't seem odd. He had been raised by Batman, Daredevil, and others, sliding into that four-color world whenever he needed an escape. His father's posting to Japan when Chance was much younger helped establish a firm and practical knowledge of the martial arts. Sneaking out the bedroom window of his mother's four flat got easier with each outing. Bringing justice took more work, much more effort.

The streets of Rogers Park proved a challenging crucible. Fists and feet shut down dealers and gangbangers, eventually bringing peace to that unknown boy. Chance watched the faces of the teens at Senn Academy brighten as he spent more nights on the streets. A blanket of protection had fallen over the school. The students felt safe. Chance found himself able to sleep a bit more, not bandage his hands so frequently. Then he went to live with his dad and things got a bit more difficult.

It wasn't that the Gold Coast didn't have crime. Living on the 35th floor just didn't facilitate sneaking out a window the same way as his mom's place. The kids at his new school didn't need any protection. They had plenty of money, power, or influence to insulate them from the injustice of the streets. He spent nights hopping the "L" and heading north, maintaining a presence in his old Neighborhood.

And then he got caught.

He must have left something out or dripped blood somewhere. As he came in one night from patrol, he found his father waiting there for him. They talked. Chance unburdened himself of his secret, its origin, his obligation; an obligation to the community that his parents had fostered since a young age. His father nodded. His father understood.

"Not here," his father said. "If we are to play hero, Chicago is not the arena for it."

"We?" Chance asked. His father smiled.

It took months for them to prepare. Chance watched his father commit himself to something for the first time; a much stronger effort than his marriage, Chance mused. While Chance enjoyed the nights out with his "mentor," he balked at accepting financial assistance from his father. Maybe he was channelling for his mother, but Chance didn't feel he needed money. A near thing with a gunshot wound convinced Chance that some Kevlar inserts might be a good idea. Grudgingly, he accepted a small trust drawn up to support and further the pair's heroic activities.

His dad had gotten a job quite easily. Politicians always need help getting re-elected somewhere. Chance bid goodbye to his mother, his small circle of friends, and the streets of Rogers Park. Together, father and son relocated to Paragon City, to patrol the streets as Kid Harrier and The Harrier King.

Biography

Chance Thomas in the only child of Hunter Sullivan and Agnes Wea. Born in the Netherlands, Chance has traveled extensively as his father moved from State Department posting to posting. He spent a significant portion of he tweens and early teens in Japan where he began his studies in the martial arts.

Chance's family returned in the States when he was 14, his parents separating in an amicable divorce shortly after. Chance lived with his mother in Chicago until he turned 16, attending Senn Academy in the city's Rogers Park neighborhood. A shooting at the school inspired him to take to the streets in an attempt to protect his classmates. Discovery by his father led him to adopt the name Kid Harrier and settle in Paragon City.

Chance attends a private school in Paragon, chafing at the wealth, constant gossip, and social back-biting displayed there. The experience differs considerably from his time spent in Japanese and Chicago public schools. He's still adapting, but continues to maintain a perfect GPA. While attending university is in the plan, Chance has not thought out any future career goals.

Hunter Sullivan and his son share an apartment in Atlas Park. Hunter currently works as a political consultant, translating his experience with the State Department and Chicago politics into a lucrative business. Chance's mother Agnes, still lives in Chicago; a social worker for the Jan Addams Hull House Association.

With all his travel and experience, Chance maintains an open mind when approaching other cultures and a strong sense of social responsibility. He responds well to change and is usually able to adapt to any social situation. He tends towards tactful bluntness and often asks questions to get to know people better. He seems anxious to learn all he can about the world around him. The sites and capes of Paragon continue to astound him.

As Kid Harrier, Chance tends to wade early into combat, seeking out powerful enemies, and sometimes getting in over his head. A former teammate, Semjaza, once remarked that he was indeed well named, given the risks he likes to take. Chance has begun to re-think this approach and started to study more stealthy methods of engaging foes and resolving missions.

After a brief time with Teen Phalanx, Chance decided to join The All Star Teen Sentinels. In the the city since February of 2008, he has started to make a few friends in the group and enjoys spending time with them socially and professionally. He's recently begun dating teammate Regina Howard, American Promise.

Powers and Abilities

Chance is a normal 16 year old teenager with average strength, slightly above average intelligence, and truly superior dexterity and endurance. His abilities stem from years of hard work and dedication.

Martial Arts

Chance excels at the martial arts, combining the Japanese schools of Gojyu-ru and Aikido into an eclectic fighting style. He also studied Kendo and Kenjistu, but prefers to use his hands and feet while fighting on the street.

Restful Meditation

Given his knowledge of meditation, Chance can enter a trace like state that provides him with the benefit of eight hours sleep in four.

Storylines

Dating American Promise

Upon meeting Regina Howard by chance one Sunday morning, Kid Harrier felt an immediate affection and affinity. He saw her as a remarkable and attractive young woman with a great sense of humor. That she, like Chance, hit the streets with nothing but their wits, talents, and skills, brought them even closer. This affection grew as they spent more time together and discovered several common interest: a love of Indian food, a belief in social justice, even a shared opinion that rap has pretty much deteriorated since the powerful rhymes of Public Enemy.

Since sharing a first kiss on a deserted beach in Talos Island, Chance has fallen hard for Regina. Not knowing much about American Promise, Chance's father remains cautious and concerned for his son. Chance left a ten month relationship back in Chicago and Hunter worries that the young man may be jumping into things a bit too soon, a bit too deeply.

For all the feelings churned up inside him, Chance realizes that he doesn't really know Regina too well. He's knows of her previous crush on teammate Ace Troubleshooter, and they have talked about it. He looks forward to every moment they get to spend together and getting to know her as best he can. At this moment, he believes that nothing could change his growing feelings for her.
