Character History
Mark Joyner's father was a researcher who specialized in superhuman physiology, a field of study that took off in the wake of the Rikti war and the drastic surge in the superhuman population. As a result, Mark grew up around the superheroes Dr. Joseph Joyner counted as colleagues and friends. That influence instilled in him a need to become a superpowered hero himself ... but he couldn't have foreseen the series of circumstances in which he actually got them.
When Mark was seventeen, Dr. Joyner had a falling out with a fellow researcher, Dr. Ivan Karn, who stretched the boundaries of metahuman science by breaking ethical barriers such as using human test subjects. Dr. Karn was fired, but he retaliated by injecting Mark with a substance designed to kill him within forty-eight hours' time. Mark's father raced the clock in order to find a cure, only to find that one existed in Karn's own notes. Seeing no alternative, Dr. Joyner used those notes to devise a formula that would endow Mark with superhuman abilities to save his life. The procedure was a success, and Mark developed an increased physicality (strength, speed, agility, endurance, and sensory capacity) that was triggered by a surge of adrenaline.
Mark saw in his newfound powers a chance to become a costumed superhero like so many in Paragon, but his father was dead-set against it. Dr. Joyner's best friend -- a veteran superhero himself -- finally convinced him to allow Mark to pursue his dream. Donning a two-tone red costume, Mark Joyner has spent the subsequent years fighting crime in Paragon City as Rush, though the rift between himself and his father has proven to be a much more difficult battle to fight.
