Pre-Earth History
Pre-War Years
Nivera was born on the planet Nemen in the Nemenian capitol city Sorisen. Her family was poor and as the eldest child Nivera felt it was her responsibility to help make ends meet. And so, at the (Nemenian) age of 18, she enrolled herself into the SpaceCorps Academy and after flying through her classes and examinations and graduating at the top of her class, Nivera was accepted into the Nemenian OrbiCorps. The OrbiCorps were a specially picked group of pilots and soldiers responsible for maintaining the defense of Nemen and it was considered an honor for any member of the SpaceCorps to even be considered for a position there. This posting, however, didn't suit her, and many uneventful patrols and emergency drills later she requested to be assigned elsewhere. It was then that Nivera was assigned to the same ship she'd serve on for the rest of her military career: The HMS Vora.
The HMS Vora was a scouting and science ship led by Captain Huros and was responsible for anything from responding to Nemenian distress calls to surveying asteroids which, Niv thought, was much more exciting than sitting around back at home and waiting to defend her planet from an enemy that'd never come. Little did Niv know that life was going to become much more exciting than she'd imagined or even hoped.
The Vora was called to rescue the passengers and crew of a disabled ship on the borders of Nemenian space. This ship, a Nemenian civilian transport, had lost power to its engines and was slowly losing power to all systems and was barely holding together structurally. Nivera, now one of Captain Huros' most trusted junior officers, was sent to lead a rescue\investigation team into the derelict ship. The rescue and investigation revealed that while the ship was attacked by an unidentifiable hostile force, its crew was fortunate enough to have in its ranks a Nemenian peacebringer named Lonerin. But, while Lonerin had saved the ship from almost certain destruction with one powerful brilliant blast of light that destroyed both attacking fighters, he had also been poisoned by the ship's leaking reactor.
Lonerin would spend the remainder of his life in the Vora's medical bay. Nivera, out of concern and curiosity, visited him often. It didn't take long for the two to become very close friends, and had the situation been different, perhaps they would have become much more. They talked for hours on end, Nivera telling tales of her days aboard the Vora and her years as a child in Sorisen; Lonerin telling of his own travels and his bonding with his Kheldian.
Sadly, the time came when the medbay's technology could no longer keep the dying peacebringer alive and Lonerin passed away after only a few weeks on board the Vora; however, before Lonerin died he asked one last request of his newfound friend. He would ask Nivera to bond with his Kheldian. Nivera could not deny the request of her dying friend, and perhaps thought that in doing this she would always have part of him with her.
It happened so quickly for her. In a flash of light Nivera's life was transformed forever. However, that same flash of light would, ironically, precede the darkest chapter of the young Nemenian's life.
Nemenian-Scrillan War
The attack on Lonerin's ship was one of many attacks on Nemenian vessels by an unkown enemy space force. Initially dismissed as increased pirate activity, the nature of the attacks gradually became more and more hostile as more and more of the enemy ships swept through Nemenian space going so far as to attack Nemenian outposts and ships. These first skirmishes were easily won by the Nemenian SpaceCorps, yet each one seemed much more difficult than the last. It wasn't until the shocking destruction of the proud SpaceCorps battleship Kamineh that King Yordra-Sor of the Nemenians commanded his forces to quell this new threat before it grew any larger. Most every ship in the SpaceCorps fleet was immediately outfitted for war and reassigned to patrols of Nemenian space including the Vora. The king, Nemen and Nivera never expected what would follow for the next four (Nemenian) years; the most violent and bloody war in Nemenian history.
The Scrillans
It was upon the discovery of a derelict Bahd'Se vessel that the Nemenians learned the name and nature of their adversaries. The Bahd'Se were studying planet Scrilla and its inhabitants, the Scrillans, when their ship was attacked by an unknown vessel very much like the ones the Nemenians had been fighting those last few months. It had been abandoned and set adrift for many years its inhabitants long dead, but the ship's database, instrument readings, flight history and personal datalogs were still very much intact. Before the ship went dark, the Bahd'Se researchers had compiled notes from their many years of studying Scrillan culture.
The Scrillans, according to the files, were a simple non-spacefaring race. In fact, Scrillan society was composed of many warlike tribes who fought constantly with each other, caring not for scientific or philosophical advancements any further than those that might give them an advantage in their next battle. How the Scrillan race had, in only a decade, advanced from hut-dwelling nomads into a technologically advanced galactic power was something the Nemenians never quite understood until near the end of the war when the Scrillans were revealed to be mere puppets of a near-extinct race of cyborg monstrocities called Techlords.
The Techlords approached the awestricken Scrillan people with a proposition. The Scrillans would assist them in their destruction of the Nemenians, and in return they would be given power and technology beyond their imagining (and, of course, the glory of battle). A council of tribe leaders gathered in what would become the Scrillan capital city of Ukrettis to vote on their decision. A near unanimous vote was cast in favor of the Techlords' propostion. The members of the dissident tribes met their deaths at the ends of the Scrillans' newly acquired firearms.
