Salamandyr was created by Locksbane to add depth to the character of Dreamkatcher. The creator wanted something to tie Dreamkatcher to more mundane situations, and like all great sitcoms, when things get slow, toss in a cute kid.

Personality
Salamandyr's mood tends to be very mercurial. He can change from happy to sad to angry at the drop of a hat. He's not very openly emotional though, feeling the need to keep his feelings to himself. The only people he really opens up to are his uncle, whom he idolizes, and his friends in the PRIME academy. He is a typical teenager, in that he sometimes considers the world to revolve around himself, and can be very stubborn when he makes his mind up. He is an avid musician, being an accomplished keyboardist and sometime singer. His favorite music is 80's and 90's pop and techno. He normally carries an mp3 player, even in combat, and usually has some kind of music playing. Every good battle deserves a soundtrack, after all. He has an intense dislike of Trolls, due to his experience with them upon first arriving in the city, and takes every opportunity to get them off the streets.
Powers
Salamandyr is a mutant with the ability to produce and control flame with enormous destructive power.
Fire Blast
Salamandyr is a pyrokinetic with the ability to induce almost any substance to burn. He can produce flame ranging from relatively cool temperatures used for effect to hot enough to deform steel. He has mastered the ability to the point of creating small controlled bursts of flame as well as tremendous roiling clouds of fire. He can also project a thin beam of concentrated fire hot enough to melt thru several inches of metal. He has recently gained the ability to cover himself in high-intensity plasma, which serves to protect him from bullets and other projectiles, and also makes melee combat very painful for his oppenents
Fire Manipulation
Salamandyr has begun mastering the more complicated aspects of his powers. He can mold his flames into different shapes, such as rings or walls to confine villains. He has also begun to use the heat from his fires to drain power from his enemies into himself, thus restoring his own strength. He can also concentrate his fires to do significantly more damage. Recently, he has learned to use the heat he produces to create cushions of air to catch or lift people or objects. He can focus his flame into a coherent blade of fire, which is hot enough to cut through most substances. This ability at first required immense concentration, but is becoming easier for him. He has recently gained the ability to store heat energy and use it to revive himself in cases where he might otherwise be considered knocked out in combat. This resuscitation produces a huge flaming burst, which reminds some people of a phoenix being reborn.
Flight
By heating the air around himself, Salamandyr can fly. By varying the temperature and creating thrust behind himself, he can maneuver well enough to dodge projectiles and avoid obstacles.
Character History
Salamandyr, aka Mark Eric Hanson, was born to typical parents in a quiet suburb of Philadelphia. Unknown to him, his mother's family had a history of producing magically talented individuals, and his father's family had a tendency towards mutation. Combining the two factors, Mark was born with the ability to metabolize magic and produce flame. His childhood was perfectly normal, with school, friends, all the other concerns of a normal child. Then, as Mark got older, things changed. His father, unhappy with his son's interest in music and his participation in a local garage band, became very critical of the boy, and nothing Mark did from that point would be satisfactory. His father, being somewhat bigoted and intolerant, also held a great dislike of Mark's uncle, Michael Drake, also known as the hero Dreamkatcher, since Michael was openly gay. Mark's mother, however, adored her brother and took Mark to visit as often as possible, until Mr Hanson finally forbade her to take his son with her on the visits. This upset Mark, as he idolized the hero, and secretly wanted to have powers like him. He was also beginning to realize that he had a lot more in common with his uncle; Mark had realized he too was gay. When he was sixteen, Mark and his father got into a huge argument about his particpation with the band, and the elder Hanson went so far as to break Mark's keyboard, stomping the intrument until it shattered. In a rage, Mark felt something snap inside his head, and the next instant his father's hair burst into flame. Panicking, Mr. Hanson rushed to the kitchen to douse his hair, and Mark, shocked and afraid, raced to his bedroom and crammed a few belongings into his backpack, then ran from the house. Carrying what cash he had saved, Mark bought a bus ticket to Paragon City, hoping that his uncle would be able to help him.
Off to Paragon City
After discovering that Mark had fled, his mother had called her brother in Paragon to tell him about the fight and Mark's departure. Checking the bus schedules, Michael traced the arrival to a Skyway City bus terminal, and headed there to meet his nephew. He arrived just in time to save the teen from being mugged by a group of Trolls, although Mark managed to hold his own for a time, untrained though he was. After taking the boy back to his condo, Michael sat down and got Mark to tell his side of the story. Discovering the history of conflict and recent abuse by Mr Hanson, Michael called his sister and, after assuring her that Mark was safe, convinced her and her husband to transfer guardianship of the teen to Michael. He promised to get the youngster the training he needed to insure that his powers remained under control. Mark confided his sexual orientation to his uncle as well. Shortly after getting settled in, Michael took Mark to meet Antonio Nash at GIFT. After rigorous training, and after extracting a promise from the boy to concentrate on his schoolwork, Mark was granted a provisional hero license.
Life in the Big City
Mark's life was, to him, much improved after his move to Paragon. He made new friends, including meeting a new prospective band, and settled into the new routine of school, home life, and training. The peace of the apartment was interrupted when Michael met and began dating Brian Hardesty, a policeman he had saved from being slain by the Circle of Thorns. Mark was supportive of his uncle's relationship, and even teased the two men about moving so slowly. By the time Brian moved in, Mark considered him a second uncle. Relations with his father were slowly beginning to warm, and Mark made several visits home on weekends, but was always glad to return to Paragon.
PRIME
The peace was too good to last, however, and Mark, ironically, was part of the cause. In trying to defend a fellow student against her gun-wielding boyfriend, Mark inadvertently used his powers in school, throwing a small fireball and melting the other boy's gun. Although his motives were good and his intention purely to disarm, the school board voted to expell him for "the safety of both himself and the other students". Despite the support of the police, most of the students, and his uncle, the expulsion was upheld, and Mark was temporarily barred from attending school. His uncle, however, called in a few favors and, together with several friends, opened the PRIME academy. This school was intended for students like Mark, who had superhuman abilities and did not fit in or were uncomfortable with the regular educational system. Although he was deeply touched by the lengths his uncle went to for him, Mark is still deeply embarassed to be the center of so much attention. Since beginning classes at PRIME, Mark has met new friends and improved his control over his flame power to much higher levels. He has recently taken a part time job as a weekend deejay for a local radio station, and is trying to prove to himself that he is capable of handling several different responsibilities. He recently celebrated his 17th birthday, and his parents gave him a candy-apple red Mustang as a gift.
