I can't actually remember what the original inspiration was for the Samoan Scrapper. The name just sounded nice, and it had a ring to it. Originally her real name was Auina, but was changed to Samantha so that it'd be easier for other players to remember (since 'Sam' is often how Samoan Scrapper is shortened). Originally Sammy was just an alt, someone I made on a whim. I had no idea that she'd end up becoming one of my most played characters. I love the fact that she's not a typical hero, in the sense that she doesn't fight crime without fear. She has grown quite a bit since I first started to RP with her. She started out as just a kid, who at some points was scared to death to do her job as a hero. While she bore a costume and regenerative powers, she wasn't much different from any other kid her age. Not only has she grown older, but she has grown somewhat wiser. She has stepped into a position of leadership, something that is VERY new to her, and has made a successful go at it thusfar. Despite the horrible things she's seen, she still hasn't lost the will to fight for what is right. While she has become a more jaded, she has yet to use that as an excuse to give up what she believes in. To me, this is what makes her a hero.

Background

Love at First Fight

That would be the best way to describe the first meeting between Rose Krantz, better known as the Arachnos operative Rose Widow, and Samuel Noelani, the famed Samoan Scrapper. Sam was a second generation hero, a mutant haling from Hawaii and had moved to Paragon City, eager to prove his worth to the hero community. It was in one of Sam's first missions that he came face to face with Rose Widow. She was among Arachnos's most talented fighters, but found herself rather hard pressed when it came to fighting this young hero. There was an instant spark between them it seemed...rather odd, considering that they were on opposing ends. Widow managed to win the encounter, though barely, and slipped away. As the years passed and the Samoan Scrapper earned himself quite a reputation, fate seemed to bring them back together, as frequently his missions involved stopping some plan of sorts from Arachnos...and it always seemed that Rose was the one handling things. The attraction between them grew, though neither acted upon it.

One day, life threw them both a curve, giving them a chance to confess their feelings to one another.

Lord Recluse had made arrangements for parts for a new superweapon he had concocted to be smuggled into Striga Isle. Rose was assigned to oversee the operation. In a rare instance where Sam opted to work with others, the Samoan Scrapper in cooperation with several other heroes, including members of the Freedom Phalanx and the Dawn Patrol, were searching every ship coming into the island. The Scrapper happened to strike gold (so to speak) in that he found the right boat, but amidst the fighting that errupted, the ship took damage and capsized. Through a mere stroke of luck, Rose and Sam were trapped in the overturned vessel as it very slowly was filling with water. With the other heroes busy searching the other ships entering Paragon City's waters, it looked like there was no hope for either of them. In that eerie quiet, Sam confessed that he loved Rose...and in fact fallen for her when they first fought each other. He was surprised, to say the least, to find that she felt the same. As the boat continued to fill with water, Rose said that if by some act of divinity they managed to survive, she would leave Arachnos to be with him. It was right about that moment that the Phalanx arrived, rescuing them both from a watery grave. Good to her word, Rose left Arachnos, creating a false identity for herself and marrying Sam. A few years later, she gave birth to a baby girl. They named her Samantha.

A Childhood In Hiding

To say that Lord Recluse wasn't happy about Rose's departure from Arachnos would be an understatement: he was furious! Rose Widow had been privy to a lot of the innerworkings of Arachnos, and it was feared that she would turn this information over to Longbow, to the Freedom Phalanx and any others seeking to shut them down. It had been easy before Samantha had been born to defend themselves...afterall, Rose was a very capable fighter, and the couple was more than capable of beating down Arachnos agents seeking her. After Samantha was born, this became much more difficult. The couple had been living in Steel Canyon, but shortly their daughter's birth, there was an attempted bombing of their apartment building. It was clear that staying in Paragon, so close to their adversaries, was not going to work...not if they intended to keep their child safe. They left the city in secret, striking out west to North Dakota. They lived there for several years, keeping their past lives quiet. For Sam, it was difficult...because it meant he couldn't work as a hero. As little Samantha grew up, learned to walk, and then talk, her parents kept their child in the dark about Paragon City, Arachnos, and their powers. It was their hope that by doing so, they could keep her safe and keep their cover from being blown. When a wildfire was sparked during a drought though, threatening to burn down their town, keeping their abilities quiet was unavoidable. Sam and Rose worked to evacuate the town, and a friend of the family kept Samantha with them. Word got out that the Samoan Scrapper and his mysterious wife had single handedly saved the town, pushing them into the national news. It didn't take long for Arachnos to send operatives to the devastated town...but by that time, the Noelani family had already snuck out.

From then on, it seemed that the Noelani's would never find a place to truly settle down. Inevitably, once the family set up in a new home, some instance or another would occur and their cover would be blown. Sometimes it was because they were recognized from being on TV...other times, Sam or Rose or both would break cover in an act of heroism. Samantha, who had always been a quiet girl, became more and more introverted with each move. She had trouble making friends due to her rather shy nature, and by the time it seemed she made a few, she would have to pick up and move. Every couple of years she would have to change schools, memorize a new identity, remember a new backstory. It was tiring, so very tiring. She was even somewhat resentful of her parents at times, because she wanted to be normal. She had no powers and wanted to have the normal life that a normal non-super powered girl was supposed to have! Things took a drastic change though when she was 11.

She and her parents were headed down I-40 going through Oklahoma when there was a horrible traffic accident. In the chaos, Samantha was flung out of the Noelani's SUV, and then another vehicle ran her over. Her parents were horrified...because it was more than apparent that their daughter was dead. As they scrambled to get to her though, they heard a strangled sounding cough. It was Sam...and she was alive. Within seconds, her body began to heal itself, much to her parents bewilderment. It was apparent that their daughter was special indeed, a mutant like her father.

Samantha's act of regeneration managed to hit the news, and Arachnos agents were able to track them as they were enroute to a new home. A fight broke out and the family managed to escape. After the conflict, Rose decided it would be a good idea to train their daughter to defend herself. Samantha wasn't exactly a very willing pupil, but she knew that their family was in danger. She would train, whether she liked it or not, because if she couldn't help herself, it meant that either her mom or her dad would have to protect her...which could get one of them injured or much worse. Eventually, Samantha grew to enjoy the training sessions with her mother. She found that she could easily manage her mother's unique style of fighting. It was during these sessions that Sam began to develop a bond with her mother. Slowly, as the months and then years passed, the resentment she held towards her parents lessened.

Over the course of 3 years, the Noelani's had to move a couple of times, but eventually they left the continental US to return to Hawaii, Samuel's state of birth. They settled in the smallest town they could find, Ainaloa, and they were able to settle down. Far removed from larger cities and information hubs, they were able to stay under Arachnos's radar. It seemed that all would finally be going well. This was not to be, however, as a few months later, Samuel was diagnosed with prostate cancer. The doctors deemed it inoperable, and at the time only gave him a few months at most to live. Rose took out several loans and juggled three jobs trying to cover her husband's medical expenses, while Sam took whatever jobs she could to help make ends meet: babysitting, working at a local book store mostly. Samuel managed to defy the doctors predictions (perhaps due to his own mutation, which made his body tougher than that of most people), but bouts with chemo and various other treatments left him mostly a shell of his former self.

Paragon City

A few months ago, Rose, who had been so devoted to her family, simply disappeared. There were no clues left behind, not even a sign of a struggle that would indicate she'd been taken. It was a devastating blow to Sam, and Samuel was beside himself with worry. At risk of calling attention to his family, he put in calls to contacts he had back in Paragon City. Surely someone could track his wife down, find out what happened. It took a couple of weeks, but finally someone from the Freedom Phalanx managed to get some information. Rose had last been seen at the Vanguard facility in Atlas Park, and at the time there was no word as to what her current whereabouts were. Samuel was hell-bent on heading straight to Rhode Island to find Rose himself. On a sudden, rather uncharacteristic act of impulse, Samantha volunteered to go. She was afraid her father wouldn't be able to make the trip without jeopardizing his poor health. She offered to go in his stead, to take on her father's hero name, the Samoan Scrapper. She would find out what happened to her mother and bring her back. The Freedom Phalanx's Manticore offered to help take care of her father's medical expenses, repaying a favor he owed Samuel in the process. Arrangements were made for Sam to stay at a boarding house in Kings Row, and soon she was on a flight to Paragon City.

After registering at city hall, Sam went straight to the Vanguard office, hoping to be able to get some sort of information about her mother's disappearance. To her dismay, she wasn't even allowed past the lobby and was given the run-around. Disheartened, she left. A few days passed and she managed to join a group called the Vanguard Alliance, a super group with ties to the Vanguard itself. She hoped that perhaps being among their members would help. Nothing changed though. She still couldn't get past the lobby. The only way she would be able to get to someone who could help her would be to get a higher security clearance. So, even though the Alliance couldn't assist, she stayed with them for a time.

One evening, she responded to a call asking for backup in dealing with a situation in the Hollows. She answered, bringing her into contact with a group Evolution-X cadets being led by Attache'. She was immediately impressed with how well the mutants worked together as a team. She joined not long after, hoping that with the Academy's help, she could become stronger as an individual to meet the security requirements to enter the Vanguard. She moved out of the boarding house she had been staying in and moved into the dormitories in the days that followed. Aside from the everyday hero work that is ever present in Paragon, her first couple of months went rather quietly. She managed to make some friends, something she'd always had a very hard time doing during her childhood. Sam made friends with folks in her super group, and outside of it as well. She really have hit it off with a hero named Viridian Sentry, a scrapper she worked with a bit. The two fought side by side with many other heroes to take down Romulus Augustus in Cimerora. It was during this fight that she first met the young man who has now become her closest friend: Adrian Slater, better known as Space Age. While the fighting in Ancient Rome was certainly too hectic for much talking, Sam developed a bit of a crush on the young man. After that, they met a few times, just randomly for missions. The more she was around him, the more she found that she really enjoyed his company and a friendship began to form between them. In short time, she began to realize that maybe she liked him more than just as a friend. Finally, one night at Pocket D, Sam confessed these feelings to Adrian...to find that he felt the same way.

On top of making friends, Sam also managed to make enemies as well. Her very first enemy was made after she and her friends Army Knife and Static-Surge thwarted a bank robbery in Brickstown. This was nothing new, as bank robberies happen quite often, and almost as often are foiled by someone in spandex. Sam had no idea at the time that she and her friends were making themselves some powerful enemies in the process. Nearly a week later, a strange message arrived. The mysterious sender claimed to have kidnapped Static-Surge. Panicked, Sam followed the letter's instructions: go to Warburg. She knew it was a trap, but if there was any chance that her friend was in danger, she had to go. Another Evolution-X member, Resurgency, came along with her. Upon arriving at the rocket launch pad, the mysterious sender made himself known: Crypt Stone. Apparently that bank robbery was for gathering funds to fuel a rocket that he planned to launch. By stopping the robbery, Sam, Army Knife and Static had put a severe damper on his timetable for said launch. Fighting ensued...and in the end, another Evolution-X member, VoiceBox, was the one who defeated Crypt Stone. The villain slipped away after the medical teleportation system sent him to a nearby hospital.

That same day, various members of Evolution-X came into contact with a man calling himself Grandfather Death. Grandfather Death claimed to be VoiceBox's grandfather...and suffice it to say, the old man was not a fan of Evolution-X. There was some confusion before the fight erupted, in which the old timer was claiming that Sam had 'chosen a side'...and basically implied that the two had conversed over on the Rogue Isles. This left Sam feeling more than a bit confused and led to some awkward questions from her fellow Evo-X members. A couple days later, a rather shocking event occurred at Pocket D which seemed to clear the confusion. Sam came face to face...with her Praetorian self. She called herself the Samoan Stalker...and apparently, this Praetorian Earth native was not all that happy with how meek and humble her Earth counterpart was. Words were exchanged between Prae-Sam and Resurgency (who was also at Pocket D at the time). Grandfather Death happened to arrive on the scene, and it appeared that Stalker was the one he had spoken with. The stalker has yet to choose to side with anyone at this point...should she side with the Wicked (the group that Grandfather Death heads), this could mean to serious problems for Evolution-X and for Sammy.

Despite these setbacks, Sammy was able to reach her goal. With the help of the Academy and the friends she began to make, she managed to raise her security clearance enough to gain entrance into Vanguard. The leadership there stated that they were 'looking into the matter', basically giving her the run around. Unsure of what else to do, she began taking on missions in the Rikti Warzone: partially to garner a reputation in the organization (and hopefully greasing the wheels and getting the bureaucrats to work harder in their investigation) and partially hoping that perhaps she could find an answer to her mothers disappearance there.

Complications

Things began looking up. Adrian and Sammy officially became a couple. She was making a difference in the war effort. She'd done her part to help the people of Cimerora, though she is still unsure just what role her part was in all of it.

Things didn't look up for very long. Sam finally received information from Vanguard about her mother's whereabouts: the Rogue Isles. She made a very hasty decision, fueled mostly by her emotions, to go undercover in the Isles to find Rose (see Short Story: Undercover). She left a note for Evolution-X leadership, indicating where she was going and left a message for Adrian. After a few days passed, Sam slipped into Pocket D to make contact with her boyfriend. An argument quickly erupted, as Adrian was not happy with her for leaving him out. There is confusion now, as in the heated discussion, Sam told Adrian that she was no stranger to forging new identities. In the end, he grudgingly agreed to let her continue her mission, stating he had some contacts from the Isles who could help her on her path. So, Sam set out for the Isles, taking the name of Veiled Stryke. After a few weeks, and some help from a woman from Adrian's past, she was able to locate her mother. Rose was imbedded with a group of Arachnos operatives, seeking to overthrow Arachnos and take control of the organization themselves. In exchange for her services, they agreed that no more agents would hunt the Noelani's. For that reason, Rose had to stay, until they coup was carried out. With a heavy heart, Sam returned home, empty handed.

Things were shaky between Adrian upon her return. During a mission they were working together on, there was a mishap in time travel. The two found themselves in the 1940s, and neither of their Ouroboros portals worked. The menders, essentially, had cut them off. For four years, they were trapped in the past. They managed to get caught up in World War II, becoming a part of the Hero Brigade. During their tour of duty, they fought in the sands of North Africa, as a part of the Lucky 13 squadron. They helped disrupt Rommel's supply line, thus allowing the Allies to eventually gain a victory. They fought in many engagements, but Sam and Adrian's final battle was D-Day. Heroes fought against their Axis counterparts, both working to help their respective sides when the bloody battle. Adrian was a part of the aerial fighting that took place above beaches, helping to protect boats that were bringing in soldiers from being mowed down by super powered attacks. Sammy, on the other hand, was on the ground taking out non flying Axis heroes. Both were injured badly during the battle, eventually taken out. Sammy was able to recover easily, thanks to her regenerative abilities. Adrian, however, had been hit hard. The Space Age suit was damaged badly, and Adrian was barely alive. While they lay resting in field hospitals after the battle, the menders finally pulled them out. Apparently, it was destiny that they were to take part in the fighting on the beaches of Normandy, though none of the menders would say as to what role they had played in the events of history. Adrian was still unconscious and sent back to the Blitz Corporation, while Sammy was returned to the Evolution-X dormitories.

Upon her return to the present, Sam found things difficult to say the least. While to her friends, she was only gone for part of a day, to Sam...she had been parted for 4 years. Older, matured by the sights she'd seen, she seemed out of sorts as she tried to adjust. To make matteres worse, Adrian seemed to be suffering amnesia. He remembered nothing about Sam, about being a hero before, and nothing about the past 4 years. The Space Age suit ahd been replaced, and he was under the impression that he'd just become a hero. Each time Sam interacted with him, he seemed to grow stranger, culminating to a confusing altercation a top a statue in Steel Canyon. Adrian seemed to have no idea how to control his suit as he lashed out and attacked her. In the end, he fled, leaving her confused and bewildered. After several weeks of investigating, the trail went cold...and she was forced to simply sit back and wait. She slowly became more cynical, more jaded about her world, and the situation with Adrian did nothing to help.

It was during this time that she befriended Skjor Stormbringer and became acquainted with Demon Hunter (better known to most as DH). While Sam had grouped with Skjor on more than one occasion prior to her time travel mishap, she had never really opened up to the Asgardian goddess. With stress from her circumstances mounting and the seeming loss of her former friends, Sam joined Skjor at Paragon Elite's lounge...and with the help of some Asgardian mead, she finally spoke about her troubles. Though she didn't last long (she only made it through 3 mugs of the divine brew), she learned a bit about the mighty thunder goddess and had found someone to whom she could speak to about her troubles. Shortly after, Sam began to team with DH, and slowly got to know him. Though she couldn't claim to know everything about him, she began to get a feel for who he was, and what he was about...or so she thought. Not long after, DH began to partake in actions that, suffice it to say, were less than heroic. She confronted him on two occasions about it. The first time around, she was able to talk him down. The second time around, however...well...

Sam had imbibed in one too many shots of Jack at Pocket D. When she heard the scanners sound off about a man fitting DH's description slaughtering Lost down in Skyway, Sam rushed to put a stop to it. She was in a bad mood, drunk...and instead of talking DH down, she ended up getting into a fight with him instead. The fight solved nothing, and in hindsight made things much worse. The fight ended when DH struck what would've been a fatal blow to a normal person with his katana. He left the scene, and Sam was left to regenerate and limp her way back to the Academy. Sometime after the altercation, Sam spoke with Skjor about it. Sam felt bad about the incident, shouldering the blame herself since she'd failed to even try to talk to him, to try to stop him through some means other than violence. It is unknown what Skjor has done since regarding the situation, but she has said that she would do her best to keep Asgard out of the matter for as long as possible.

Current Events

Sam has recently been made a head of Evolution-X while Metal Smith takes a leave of absence. With the help of the Moonlight Stalker (the school's counselor), she has been working to keep the academy afloat. There have been some recent problems, as the government dropped its funding of the school. GIFT has shouldered the costs to keep the school going, as many of the students have no other place to go. The other activities (ie hero work), however, took a bit to find financial backers for. Luckily, some mysterious benefactors have agreed to finance the more secretive portions of the school.

Not long after her promotion, Sam became aware that something was off about her friend Kirk (Resurgency). At first she brushed off his odd behavior, thinking that she was over analyzing things. In the end, her worries were well founded, as it turns out that Kirk was playing host to a Nictus. Events eventually led to a confrontation in Warburg. Sam, haunted by the mistakes she had made with DH, was unable to fight back, for fear she would hurt her friend. In the end it was Kirk who put a stop to the Nictus, frying him with radiation from the warhead atop the rocket in Warburg. She was able to carry him back to the infirmary, and later was able to find out more about his past. It is unclear how this event will effect Evolution-X as a whole, as there are some out there who say that Kirk should pay for the deeds he committed while the Nictus had control of his body. Sam, for the moment, seems unwilling to allow her friend to be persecuted for what the Nictus did.

Sam and Adrian officially ended their relationship. After disappearing for weeks, she saw him in GIFT and confronted him. As it turns out, Adrian had been brain washed and had been under the control of another after his return from the 1940s. He felt it best to end the relationship, claiming that trouble seemed to follow him wherever he went, and he wasn't willing to continue exposing Sam to it. Sam mostly blames herself for the way things ended, and she is not seeking to rekindle anything with Adrian.

In other matters of her personal life, Sam has become closer to her friend, JC (Neuronomicon). There are definitely some sparks between the two, but neither have stepped forward and tried to push for a relationship. Sam has some anxiety regarding the situation, mostly stemming from her very recent break up with Adrian. Both seem content to take things slowly and to get to know one another...so nothing is really official at this point in time.

Personality

In the beginning, Sam was the probably the least likely of anyone to become a hero. She was very shy, timid, often speaking so quietly others had a hard to hearing her. She was riddled with insecurities, and had low self esteem. Her time spent fighting in WWII changed her though. While she is still rather insecure, she is no longer the shy and timid girl that most of her friends knew her to be. Before, she would've shied away from taking any sort of leadership role. While she doesn't enjoy being the one to call the shots now, she doesn't back away from it either. She is not apt to throw out smart aleck comments (as many of her teammates seem prone to do)...but every now and again she'll make a quip or two. She tends to internalize her problems, choosing to keep them to herself. The same thing goes with her insecurities. She has a few people she talks to about her doubts, her fears and her problems, and that seems to help her deal with them.

Powers/Abilities

Sam's mutation primarily is regeneration. Because her cells are constantly trying to keep things at status quo, her body always seems to be fit and in shape. For this reason, she has more stamina than most, and her regenerative powers allow her to bounce back from injuries and fatigue quickly. It's not yet known how extensive her mutation is...but when her abilities first awakened, she'd been flung from a moving vehicle and had another car run her over. She'd died when the vehicle struck her, but within a span of a few seconds, she revived and began healing on her own. For as of yet unexplainable reasons, she is also able to jump much higher and farther than normal people (even the athletic sort).

A side-effect to her mutation is that she has a very high metabolism. As such, she is constantly having to eat something or another. If she doesn't, it will cause issues. At best, she could experience nausea, jitteryness, cold and clammy skin, sweating, hunger pangs and a rapid heartbeat. At its worst, she could become irritable, anxious or confused, have blurred vision, a feeling of unsteadyness and have difficulty walking. It is possible that if she goes for an extended amount of time without something to eat, she could lose consciousness, suffer seizures, even go into a coma. (To date, she has yet to push it that far.)

Sam is a skilled martial artist, trained in a unique style of fighting by her mother. The style involves a lot of acrobatics, and looks almost like she's working with Hong Kong style wire works to perform some of the manuevers. Because she is constantly on the move while fighting, it makes it difficult to land any strong blows against, as they either tend to miss or miss to hit some non vital part of her body.

During her time spent in the 1940s, another side to her mutation surfaced in the form of super strength. While she isn't strong enough to, for instance, level an entire building with a single punch, she is able to lift small vehicles. She is currently working on control over this ability, as putting too much strength behind her punches and kicks could have a potentially lethal effect on her targets.

Fiction/Forum Role play

Sam receives some news at long last regarding her mother's whereabouts. The news wasn't exactly what she had been hoping for however. Sam is forced to make an important decision.

Taking place after Undercover, this short series chronicles Sam's exploits in the Rogue Isles while in search of her mother. Will she find what she is looking for? Or will she come away empty handed?

Theme(s)

Sam's really good at keeping things close to the vest, more so now thanks to the things she's seen and done back in the 1940's. Sometimes it makes her question just who she is, really. This song seems to hit that tone to me, and it's for this reason I chose this song to be Sam's main theme.

he first verse and such aren't quite as fitting...but the chorus and last verse pretty much pegs Sam when it comes to fighting. And I can't tell you how motivating EPIC cello playing can be. That last reason is quite a bit of what drove me to choose this to be Sam's battle theme.

Originally I played this a lot while Sam was running missions in the RWZ. The lyrics fit her situation at the time, regarding her mother's disappearance...well...except for the line regarding getting lost in your eyes. That's a little incestuous. The rest fits though. I play this theme now when she's running around the Rogue Isles undercover as Veiled Strike. She doesn't get to do much of that now that she's in charge over at Evo, but on the rare occasions she does, this song seems to fit her attitude.
