History
Jiang Zhu was originally a peasant woman in the countryside of China. She led a simple life, tending to her pig farm during the day and creating pottery at night. She lived in solitude, her husband having died within a few short years of their wedding. Her husband was a good man and together, they had planned on having a large family. Unfortunately, they were not successful at getting pregnant and before they could seek other remedies, her husband succumbed to an illness and died.
Jiang was devastated and never fully recovered. She maintained a Spartan living with the proceeds from her pig farm. She yearned for children of her own, but could not find herself loving another man. It was during these lonely years, that the Patron Boar from the Zodiac sought Jiang Zhu has a replacement for the recently fallen Fire Boar. The Fire Boar was an honorable Guardsman, though he did favor wine a bit too much for his own good. Tragically and perhaps inevitably, he had become too inebriated to defend himself properly from a Tsoo ambush and was killed.
The Patron Boar chose Jiang Zhu as a replacement, as her gentle nature and strength of character would be the best way to redress the balance thrown off by the Fire Boar's more rambunctious nature. Jiang had heard of the Zodiac Guardsmen before, but always had thought of them as legends. Nevertheless, she accepted the Patron Boar's request with aplomb. She tidied up her affairs on Earth, was assured by the Patron Boar that her remaining pigs would be cared for and she left her mortal life forever.
Over the centuries, Jiang Zhu became one of the most respected and beloved member of the Zodiac Guardsmen. Her natural lifespan had been extended by her Patron Animal, as it was for all Guardsmen. Jiang was frequently seen as a maternal figure to many of the Guardsmen, particularly the younger ones. She was very adept at comforting new recruits and easing them into a life of dedication in the service of the Jade Emperor and the Lady Kuan Yin.
It was because of this special relationship with so many Guardsmen, that Tian Shang Lung targeted Jiang Zhu just prior to The Great Betrayal. Tian Shang Lung realized that many of the Guardsmen on her side might balk at going to war against Jiang Zhu. They would not want her to come to harm. Tian Shang Lung knew that one such as Jiang Zhu would never turn against the Emperor, thus she had to vow that Jiang would be unharmed, in order to secure the loyalty of many of the Fallen Guardsmen.
Tian Shang Lung never intended to protect Jiang Zhu, but planned on having her killed and then removed. She could always claim that Jiang was moved to a secure location for her own safety. Tian Shang Lung sent assassins to eliminate Jiang Zhu on the eve of the Great Betrayal.
Often Jiang Zhu's gentle and graceful nature would be mistaken for weakness by her enemies, such was the case with Tian Shang Lung's assassins. As Tian Shang Lung could not send any of the Fallen Guardsmen to eliminate Jiang, she had to rely on Tsoo operatives. These operatives were quickly and easily overcome by Jiang Zhu. However, before she could warn any of the other Guardsmen, she found herself teleported to the mortal realm by the last act of a dying Tsoo assassin sorcerer.
Jiang was teleported to a Tsoo cavern hidden inside the Rogue Isles. The Tsoo in the cavern were not expecting her and their surprise enabled Jiang to escape. But, she found that she could no longer access the pathway to the Celestial Palace. The way had been closed when the Lady Kuan Yin banished all of the Zodiac Guardsmen from Heaven.
Jiang's heart was broken a thousand times over for Fallen and Loyal Guardsmen alike. Her family had been split and she could not return to the Celestial Palace to begin the work of restoring her family. She fought her way to Paragon City and connected with the handful of Zodiac Guardsmen who had made themselves known.
Description
Jiang Zhu is a master of psionic powers, though not to the same extent as Tian Shang Lung. Part of her psyche is devoted to helping others, thus she has not focused on the purely offensive arts as has Tian Shang Lung. Her kind and gentle exterior, masks a solid core of ethics and honor. She still believes that the Fallen Guardsmen can still be saved and she will always attempt to do so, at first. However, if the Fallen are unwilling to be saved, then Jiang recognizes her duty is to eliminate the traitor in order to restore the honor of the Zodiac Guardsmen.
