Stories
Origin
Kera Langley started out life simply enough - a young girl, going to school, from the state of Virginia. She dressed a little on the Gothy side, she tended to hang out with Gothy friends - but not for marijana and pizza, but just because she was lonely. She was a 'military brat' - the only daughter and lovechild of parents both in the armed forces. Because of their military careers, both parents were seldom at home, and Kera was a 'latchkey kid' - who came home from school and was alone for hours until her parents came home from work.
Someone else was feeling a bit lonely too and happened to go through that area - a nictus known as Moonrise. Like other Nictus, Moonrise had been around for thousands of years, killing people by feeding off them and sucking up their life force. She was a creature of darkness and brutal evil.... but for the first time in thousands of years she was beginning to question herself. That was how a lonely human girl and a nictus started talking. Not in an aggressive way, just sharing eachother's thoughts and feelings.
Kera was intrigued by a creature of such evil and darkness appearing to her without malice or evil intent, just wanting to talk. And Moonrise was a freakin' alien! How cool was that?! Moonrise eventually told her about the ability to merge with people. Kera was tempted by the idea of becoming someone special - a freaking superhero with dark magical powers! Moonrise on the other hand wanted to start over - to leave her old life behind, leave her dark family and children behind, and forget about it - a new lease on morality. Perhaps she'd die, perhaps she wouldn't, but in her words - 'I'm growing a conscience, and it hurts.'
So merge they did, forsaking the name Kera Langley and embracing the name Moonrise. Mom and dad, however, went apeshit. Kera's parents forced her out of the house - no alien scum were going to live in their house! Kera ran away and hitchhiked cross country to Rhode Island and the City of Heroes to make a new start and a new life for herself. It was hard at first, but she managed to room up with Shelly Lightfoot who more than understood being so far away from home and trying to start yourself anew. Eventually they became a part of the research group called the Zenvious Foundation and moved there.
Her parents would have nothing further to do with their wayward daughter, and expressed distaste at Kera Langley using their family name to what they felt was shame. In response, Kera filed for a pseudonym with the city, operating as the heroine known as Moonrise from that point forward.
Personality
Kera and Moonrise are one and the same - they merged completely and willingly, so they are the same, mind, body, and soul. ONE person, two sets of memories. Although she also thinks of herself from both points of view so she tends to sometimes talk about one of her progenitors in the third person. So if she talks about "Kera" or "Moonrise" from the third person, she's talking about the human or the nictus that comprised her current self, from before the merger.
She's a good kid. She tries hard to do what's right, but in many ways the deck is stacked against her. The addiction is powerful and thousands of years old. Breaking the addiction is like trying to break her own neck at times. As a result she has fallen into withdrawl, depression, lethargy, apathy, and self-loathing.
But all is not lost for her. She is making new friends, like Zoe Brightstar, Shelly Lightfoot, and Lanara, to cling to for support and comfort.
Powers
Moonrise is a warshade, so her Umbral powers are drawn from the Nictus inside her.
Lastest News
Moonrise got work through Shelly Lightfoot helping fight the Rikti in the warzone with Vanguard. She is often seen in full Vanguard armor beating up Rikti.
But sometimes during the quiet times of the night, Moonrise hears voices. Ancient, dark Nictus voices, and she is trying to make out what the Nictus are plotting.
Addiction
Moonrise's addiction to sucking the life out of others - especially Peacebringers - to prolong her Nictus life is still very strong as the merged Moonrise. Zoe Brightstar looks especially tasty day in and day out. She made a promise to Mr. Zen not to feed, but the longer she waits, the sicker she gets.
But it's not impossible. She won't die without feeding - she's not an energy vampire. Moonrise is strong enough to keep her word and not feed on others again.
Zoe Brightstar
Zoe Brightstar, or Little Zoe, was face of her struggle against her addiction for some time. She is a cute, spunky little girl, trapped in the body of a little girl that will never age. As a Peacebringer, Moonrise was horrified at the instinctual urge to suck the girl's life essence dry. So much so that Zoe's mere presence had the power to make Moonrise physically ill.
But something changed, and it was an action on Zoe's part. She warmed up to the 16 year old high school girl and they became friends. Zoe's presence stopped making Moonrise sick, but reminded Moonrise she was doing the right thing, and soon they became fast friends. Zoe eventually taught Moonrise to shapeshift like she could herself, sharing some things together only Kheldians could understand together, like the ability to fly without wings and soar through the sky together as friends.
Somewhere along the line Moonrise saw Zoe as a teacher. Someone who - despite being younger than her - taught her about herself as a merged Kheldian. Then suddenly one day Zoe appeared as a full grown adult in her mid twenties - at least 5-10 years older than Moonrise. Moonrise was jealous but tried to hide it. Zoe confronted her about it, and Moonrise was mortified and humiliated, hiding from Zoe. She later learned Zoe had disappeared and possibly taken prisoner by an unknown party out of state. Moonrise and some others from the Foundation like Toxpin took an airplane flight to Arizona to go and find and rescue Little Zoe from the Council.
The Death of Brightstar
The Villains of Paragon City stole Brightstar from Zoe, and murdered Brightstar, Zoe's Kheldian. This left Kera devastated and worried for her friend Zoe. After dealing with her grief and talking to Zoe about it, Kera does her best to cheer Zoe up.
Today
Time passes, as it always does. The Zenvious Foundation eventually broke up and it's members went their separate ways. Towards the latter half of 2010 Kera had graduated from high school, gone to college, and considers herself as having 'kicked her addiction'. It still niggles at her, from time to time. She doesn't see Zoe as much as she used to, having grown apart in time. However the lessons that little girl taught her stayed with her as Kera grew older and more mature... something Zoe could never do. Kera does her best to be a rolemodel to other young (pre-18) kids that manifest special powers, whatever they might be, in the hopes of putting them on the right road, to keep them out of the hands of super-villainy (Either captured/used by it or causing it), and to keep them in school and developing a solid moral foundation.
