Roleplaying
I enjoy RP, and welcome the chance to interact with other people and participate in their stories.
I've been RPing for a bunch of years now and the stuff below pretty much sums up what I do/do not want in the CoH universe. Again, just to stress this, it doesn't mean I am telling people how to RP or have fun. RP is pretty broad though, so here's an idea of what appeals to me/fits with my characters:
I stay pretty strictly within the Western "superhero" comic-book/cartoon genre, at a mid-powered level. Think Spiderman or Batman. If your style or character doesn't really fit within that, chances are we won't gel and RP together really well. Is that elitist of me? I have no idea. All I know is that I don't enjoy trying to fit my character into a universe full of "Anime" or "World of Darkness" people.
RP is co-operative and if you're playing a character who is part Cat-Spirit part Gokugenki-Desi-Kanjara, or a Garou fighting the Weaver, it's probably better if we just continue to exist in separate worlds rather than try and make it work. On the other hand if your character fights crime or hatches dastardly plans and robs banks, wears spandex or was bitten by a radioactive bat, look me up!
In the case of ERP it's just a fade-to-black.
So many different people seem to think of MRP as different things that I'm not sure about it. On the one hand I really don't like "zany" characters who are continually yelling crazy non sequiturs and slapping my villain with a fish. On the other hand I don't enjoy really "dark" roleplay either. I'm content to say a villain tortures his captives without having to go into detail about what exactly they do with a white hot poker and a cordless drill. Again, I'd refer back to the Spiderman style milieu - Morlun eating Peter's eye was about as grotesque as it goes. Anything worse can happen "off screen" or let the player fill in with their imagination.
Morality wise I've found I prefer a mix. I like villains who have a human side (unadulterated "evil" is a bit... boring) and heroes with flaws. But I'm not keen on "People With Powers" who have no real motivation. It's much more realistic, sure, but where's the drama and conflict? I like good vs. evil, but I especially like it when it's hard to tell which side is which.
"If only it were all so simple! If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds, and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart?"
