These are characters that aren't considered heroes or villains. They may hold a formal classification one way or the other, but their actions and their outlook state a more pragmatic "what's in it for me" outlook. This is different than a vigilante, who will operate outside the bounds of law but toward a purpose defined as 'right' in their own mind, be it ethical, moral, or some 'greater' aspect of the law.
