- Menace Beta - Alpha's "Brother" in the project. While Alpha might genuinely care about Beta, their relationship has been tainted by guilt, doubt, and mistrust on both sides.
- Menace Gamma - Alpha's other brother, died in a tragic accident, about six years ago.
- Menace Adjutant Tau - One of the younger members of the Menace X project, Tau's unique relationship to Beta has made her important in Alpha's plans.
- Menace Force Kappa - A young Menace who reports to Alpha, Kappa is inquisitive, stubborn, kind-hearted, and too stupid for his own good.
- Menace Mu/Nu - The Menace twins, Alpha finds them useful for certain tasks that are too dull to trust to his other soldiers.
- Menace Theta - Arguably Alpha's third in command, Theta is currently maintaining operations at the hidden main base. Has been as close to Alpha as anyone.
- Galaxy Archon Kyriakos - An enigmatic visitor who claims to be from another universe; it could be argued that he's brainwashed Alpha and is taking control of the project; Alpha seems to trust him despite Beta's better judgement, or paranoia.
- The fiends : Some of the projects most colossal failures, twisted and unthinking creatures hidden deep in the main base.
- The Nameless : Those Menace soldiers who have either not been clever enough, strong enough, or lucky enough to make rank and be officially "named" as part of the project.
- Myriael - A mysterious operative who claims his rank is "Singer"; his meeting with Alpha had a strange impact on the leader of Menace X.
- Strikeshadow - A young man who claims to be a warshade. He hates Broadhurst. And the Council. And probably the Menace X Project. And because of the samples Broadhurst used for the human side of his creations, he is Alpha's half brother.
Personality
- There was a time when Alpha might have been described as innocent and trusting. There was a time when Alpha trusted the scientists and doctors who headed up the project in Broadhurst's absence. There was a time when Alpha believed Broadhurst cared about the project, and would be back soon. There was a time when Alpha did -not- have the weight of the world on his shoulders. There was a time when he truly believed Beta would be "all right" someday.
- That time is past.
- Alpha is calm, level headed, concerned for the wellbeing of his people, and confident. On the surface at least. He stands alone, far too young, at the helm of a project that once had teams of trained soldiers, men with far more experience and preperation than he does; a project that was abandoned by those men when it got to be too much to handle. Alpha does everything he can to soothe and inspire confidence in his younger "siblings"; most of them look at him like a young child would their parents. Alpha can fix everything. Alpha has all the answers. Alpha can protect us till Broadhurst comes back..... And the stress of their expectations is starting to show...
Character History
(Spoilers... if you are interacting with these characters and don't wish to know the truth just yet, you have been warned)
Backstory
Alpha was the fist success of The Menace X Project. As such, he was left in relative peace when he was young. He was the control specimin, he was the baseline. His early childhood seemed happy to him; after all, he had his brothers Beta and Gamma. As time passed, the scientists began other cultures in preperation for Broadhurst's return, and some of those didn't turn out so well. And so, Beta was taken away from him for testing, and Gamma was taken away for enhancements. For nearly eight years, Alpha watched as Beta became more withdrawn, more sullen, and less and less willing to speak even to him. And for nearly eight years, he watched as Gamma grew, and became stronger and more beautiful. And, for eight years, Alpha found himself trying to balance Beta's moods, reassure the younger expiraments, and learn everything he could about the project, their goals, and their enigmatic missing leader, Broadhurst. The time came, when Alpha couldn't ignore that something was -wrong- with what was happening to Beta. Using all of his training, and every secret he'd learned about the base in his time growing up, Alpha snuck into the oberservation room over looking the chamber where they tested Beta. He was horrified. And enraged. He bolted from the observation room, determined that he'd get Beta out of there, now. The soldiers guarding the door caught him, and beat the boy down; landing him in the medical wing. When he was finally able to speak to Gamma, he confronted his brother, furious, needing to know if he'd been aware of what they were doing to Beta. Before Alpha was well enough to consider launching another escape attempt, though, it was too late. Beta had already snapped, taking matters into his own hands and killing several of the scientists on a rampage. The remaining interns ran to Alpha, hoping that his relative calm, and Beta's respect for him would be enough to calm down the monster they'd created. Alpha went into the test room alone with no qualms, and tried for hours to comfort Beta, but his brother was inconsoleable. Desperate, exhausted, he asked them to call for Gamma, hoping that he'd be able to succeed where Alpha had failed. This hope cost Gamma his life. Beta looked at their brother and saw everything he could have, and -should- have been, everything the scientists had torn and mutilated out of him; and he snapped. By the time Alpha made it back to the lab, Gamma was dead and Beta had gone to ground somewhere in the base. Alpha had all night to think, and what he decided was that enough was enough. There would be no more scientists, no more tests, no more project; unless it was on their own terms..
Past Events
Alpha, at 16, along with a small group of even younger and then Nameless soldiers, siezed control of the project in the weeks after Gamma's death. However, once under their own power, Alpha realized they really had no idea why they'd been made. Broadhurst's directions should he vanish; as he had; only covered the span of a few months, not decades. Determined that no one would hurt the creations of the project again, Alpha became the leader; but to protect them he had to lie. He swore to the younger Menace that Broadhurst would return soon, and once he did, everything would make sence; even as he himself realized the stark truth that they'd been abandoned. He hid the secrets of the Feinds in the underbase; even as Beta fed the project failure's to the unquenchable thirst for blood of the feinds. Most of all, Alpha did everything he could to try to find a way for Beta to heal his wounds. He would have sacrificed the entire project to somehow free Beta from the guilt of Gamma's death and the changes that had been forced upon him. Alpha has shouldered the hopes of the younger Menace's, and so has assumed the guilt of every failure, injury, and death that has come as a casualty to the project. And then, in May of that year, the Rikti invaded. The base was burried under the ruble of a burning city. The Menace collapsed most of the tunnels leading to their base to control access to it, and fought any aliens who entered their territory. And the Menace X Project was assumed destroyed by any left living who knew of its existance...
After several years in hiding, Alpha decided to move the base to a secondary location in Port Oakes. The advance team included Menace Adjutant Tau, Menace Force Kappa, and Menace Forces Mu and Nu. However, it wasn't long before Tau and Kappa began to be changed by their experiences in the field. Alpha may have been shocked when he discovered that Tau and Kappa had mutated spontaniously, without the efforts of the Menace Scientists. He wasted no time following Beta to the Rogue Isles to try to get a handle on the situation. One thing he found, among other things, was that Kappa had began to contact a group of suspicious outsiders; most notably Lyo Xion and the enigmatic Dark Xion. As well, the project was discovered by an other dimensional Nictus, Galaxy Archon Kyriakos, Alpha refused to trust him easily, but took the risk of asking for his help to find this worlds version of their father, Broadhurst.
Current Story
Praying that the Xions were indeed linked to their own history, and hoping that Kappa's initial mistake in assuming Dark Xion was in fact the long dead Gamma was a good sign, Alpha let Beta know just enough about the outsiders to ensure that he would make every effort to find them. At the same time, sencing that there could be more to Beta's relationship with Tau than fear and hatred, Alpha did his best to push those two together. These tenative plans to save Beta backfired, though, when shortly after Beta seemed to have professed his feelings to Tau, she was captured and beaten badly by an enemy soldier. Beta wasted no time tracking down the offender, with Alpha on his heels. The frustration and rage Beta felt reached a breaking point, and as Alpha watched in horror, his brother regressed into a form very similar to the Feinds locked in the main base. Fearing at the very least that his brother's mind had snapped, and that he'd be stuck in the same rage that had led him to kill Gamma, Alpha locked Beta away. He refused to allow Tau to see her commander, pleading with her and finally resorting to desperate threats and violence. When Tau realized that it wasn't Beta who'd been destroyed by events so much as Alpha, she slipped into the locked Lab against his wishes, and took Beta away from the base; hoping that once he'd calmed down they could return in time to save Alpha from the pressures threatning to break him. While they were AWOL though, with no indication within the Project of if they'd ever return or not; Kyriakos reported to the base and found Alpha dangerously on the edge... Things spiraled from bad to worse for Alpha; despite and partially because of Kappa's determination to close the distance between them. After Kappa was mutilated by the Ninja Tanshin, Alpha foolishly swore he'd never let anyone grow close enough to him to be damaged for his sake again. This, of course, overlooked the obvious fact that all the younger Menace care about him fervently. Alpha did everything he could to make Kappa hate him, so that Kappa wouldn't risk his life for Alpha's again. Almost immediately, Alpha got into a fight with Kyriakos about this; which ended when Kyriakos suggested Alpha go speak to someone he trusted. What Ky didn't realize, of course, is that being Broadhurst's son, Alpha saw him as something like an older brother, and -did- trust him. Left with few other people to speak to, Alpha began seeking out the singer Myriael more often, but Myr was inceasantly concerned about Alpha's repression of his evident mutations (wings, or at least the marks on his back where wings should have torn out) and his inability to delegate. Luckily, even the darkest night can't last forever. Beta returned home. Kappa was stubborn. And, after speaking to Strikeshadow, Alpha tested Kyriakos's DNA. Now, with Kyriakos's position in the Project secured and understood by both parties; Alpha just needs to learn to relax...
Powers
Alpha is a trained soldier, skilled with guns and devices. Recently, his guilt over Beta's condition has led him to attempt to alter his own physiology as well, and he's began to develop dark powers as a side effect.
Vulnerabilities
- Beta; he feels responsible for everything that's happened to him.
- Kappa; He just can't say no to that face.
- Alpha is chronically stressed and exhausted.
As a side note, Alpha is about 80% blind in his left eye. The magnitized target glass over his right helps him compensate for this in combat; however, his vision on the left side is still severely limited. He claims it was from an injury sustained taking over the menace base, but sources close to him suggest otherwise...
Rogue Gallery
Tanshin--Completely. Broadhurst--Maybe. Strikeshadow--uncertain.
